The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the team had not announced the deal. MLB.com was first to report the deal, expected to be worth $72 million.
Analysis: Gordon was the second overall pick of the Royals in 2005, and went through years of growing pains before finally becoming a star. He's become not only one of the best defensive outfielders in the game with four Gold Gloves to his resume, but also a consistent hitter and clubhouse leader.

Analysis: The four-time Gold Glove winner has spent his entire nine-year career with the Royals, who drafted him second overall in 2005. But it has only been in the past few years that he has truly flourished, driving up his value while helping Kansas City to this year's title.

Analysis: Gordon was racing back on Logan Forsythe's fly ball in the fourth inning when his left leg twisted gruesomely near the warning track. He collapsed to the ground and lay there as Forsythe rounded the bases for an inside-the-park homer.
