He was also suspended six games by Major League Baseball last week for hitting Allen Craig of the Cardinals with a pitch. That suspension is pending appeal.

Analysis: Sanchez gave up two home runs and a single to start the inning before hitting Craig in the shoulder. Umpire Tim Timmons immediately ejected Sanchez before tossing Pirates manager Clint Hurdle for arguing. Baseball announced the suspension Saturday and Sanchez said he will appeal.

Matt Holiday followed with a single and Sanchez's next pitch hit Craig in the helmet near his ear. Home plate umpire Tim Timmons immediately ejected Sanchez, who had thrown just 17 pitches. When Hurdle came out to argue, he also was ejected.

Analysis: Sanchez, a left-hander, will move into the No. 4 spot in the rotation. That job opened over the weekend, when right-hander Jeff Karstens was bothered by a sore shoulder. The 30-year-old Sanchez was 1-9 with an 8.07 ERA last season for Kansas City and Colorado. He pitched a no-hitter in 2009 for San Francisco.
