Analysis: In a news release Friday night, the Seattle Mariners announced Quentin has decided to hang up his spikes. The outfielder and designated hitter was playing at Triple-A Tacoma after signing a minor league contract with the Mariners on April 22. ¶ A two-time All-Star, Quentin also played for the Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox. He batted .252 with 154 home runs and 491 RBIs in nine major league seasons, finishing fifth in AL MVP voting in 2008.

Analysis: Quentin will report to Triple-A Tacoma. Quentin, 32, was released by the Atlanta Braves on April 14, shortly after being acquired from San Diego as part of a six-player trade that sent reliever Craig Kimbrel to the Padres. The nine-year veteran has a .252 average with 154 home runs. A two-time All-Star, Quentin had two knee injuries in 2014 that allowed him to play in just 50 games, a career low.

Analysis: The move involving Quinten came hours before the Braves' season opener Monday at Miami. On Sunday, they traded Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. in a deal that sent Quinten, outfielder Cameron Maybin, two minor leaguers and a draft pick to Atlanta.

Analysis: The Padres had a glut of outfielders after Preller obtained Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Wil Myers in separate deals in December. Quentin, due $8 million this year, has been slowed by knee injuries and never played more than 86 games in any of his three seasons with his hometown Padres.
