Analysis: The three-time All-Star tore his left Achilles on April 25, an injury that was thought to sideline him until 2016. Wainwright made it back well ahead of schedule, and manager Mike Matheny expects Wainwright to be in the mix to start in the playoffs barring a setback.

Manager Mike Matheny said Tuesday that if all goes well, Wainwright would start every five days for the remainder of spring training, a timetable that may allow Wainwright to pitch the major league season opener at the Chicago Cubs on April 5.
Analysis: Wainwright sustained a mild abdominal strain early in spring training. He has thrown a pair of bullpen sessions since the injury, including about 40 pitches in a simulated game Monday. Wainwright is to throw another bullpen session on Thursday, and Matheny expects him to make 50-60 pitches Saturday.
Feb. 20 5:25 PM PT6:25 PM MT7:25 PM CT8:25 PM ET20:25 ET1:25 GMT9:25 6:25 PM MST8:25 PM EST8:55 PM VEN5:25 UAE (+1)7:25 PM CT-The St. Louis Cardinals intend to limit Wainwright's workload during the spring and perhaps into the season, something their ace isn't completely confident should be a goal. Wainwright averaged 222 innings the past three seasons. He went 20-9 last year, then had surgery to remove torn cartilage from his right elbow after St. Louis was eliminated by the Giants in the NL Championship Series.
Analysis: Manager Mike Matheny said Friday the most noticeable change this spring may be the number of starts Wainwright gets. Matheny didn't specify a limitation for Wainwright, who made five spring starts last year. Wainwright said he could probably be ready for the opener with four starts, but wasn't as sure about his sharpness if he made just three starts. But, he added, "As long as we are talking about liming starts now and not in the regular season I'm fine with it."
