Tottenham Hotspur-Chelsea Preview

Antonio Conte says Tottenham would be "foolish" to spend big over the remaining weeks of the transfer window.

Spurs have made six signings during the window, landing Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic, Djed Spence, Clement Lenglet and Fraser Forster.

They have also been linked with Roma attacking midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo and Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, while wing-back Destiny Udogie is expected to arrive form Udinese and return to the Serie A club on loan.

They are also reportedly set to trigger a £41 million release clause to make centre-back Cristian Romero's loan move from Atalanta permanent, but Conte has vowed Spurs will not be reckless before the window closes.

He said ahead of Sunday's meeting with his former club Chelsea: "We improved in this way but I know I can't have everything quickly, it would be foolish to ask for a lot of players and spend a lot of money.

"We're doing the right things with common sense, not to spend the money on many players. Also, this is not the politics of the club, I understand this. We have to go in the right way, doing the right things."

Chelsea won all four meetings with Spurs in all competitions last season without conceding, but Thomas Tuchel does not feel there is a gulf between the teams.

"I never felt a huge gap in preparing these matches," Tuchel said. "They are close matches, and they are a very competitive and very talented squad.

"Their targets were clear, the set-up in the club was clear, and they took advantage of this situation and had a very aggressive transfer period.

"That's why it's one of the toughest opponents. That's what it is always with Antonio Conte's teams."

Chelsea - Thiago Silva

Thaigo Silva turned in a brilliant, statesman-like performance at the back against Everton last week, although he was up against a Toffees team devoid of an out-and-out striker. His task is likely to be harder this time around, facing Spurs' brilliant attack, but the veteran campaigner has plenty of experience to go with his quality.

Tottenham - Dejan Kulusevski

Spurs might have signed Richarlison for big money but the Brazil forward might well have to bide his time to get into the side, given Kulusevski's form. The winger starred against Southampton and has nine assists in his 19 Premier League appearances - only one player has ever hit double figures for assists in his first 20 appearances in the competition, with Brett Emerton doing so in the 2003-04 season for Blackburn Rovers.

·Since losing consecutive Premier League games against Spurs in 2018, Chelsea are unbeaten in seven games against their London rivals (W6 D1), conceding only one goal in that run.

·Chelsea are facing Spurs in their first home league match of the season for the first time since the 1958-59 campaign, winning 4-2. The other two occasions they have done so they have lost, in 1913-14 (1-3) and 1923-24 (0-1).

·For a second consecutive Premier League match Chelsea will face a former manager, with Spurs' Conte following Everton's Frank Lampard. It is the first time a side has faced managers in back-to-back games who have previously taken charge of them in the top-flight since Chelsea in October 2016, when Conte himself led them to wins over Claudio Ranieri (3-0 vs Leicester) and José Mourinho (4-0 vs Man Utd).

·Harry Kane has scored 41 Premier League London derby goals, second only to Thierry Henry (43). However, he has failed to score in any of his last five against Chelsea, only having longer goalless runs against Manchester City (seven between 2017 and 2021) and Manchester United (six between 2014 and 2016) in the top-flight.

·Chelsea midfielder Jorginho scored his 20th Premier League goal against Everton, with 18 of those penalties (90 per cent), the highest percentage of goals scored via the penalty spot of any player with 10+ goals in Premier League history. Overall, 34 per cent of his attempts at goal have been penalties (21/62) and 44 per cent of his touches within the opposition box have been his penalty attempts (21/48).
