The announcement Wednesday came three days after tight end Aaron Hernandez was sidelined with a right ankle injury. The Patriots have not said how many games they expect him to miss.
Analysis: Winslow was released by the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 1 after spending the past three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following five seasons with the Cleveland Browns. He had 75 receptions last season and has 437 in his career.

A team spokesman confirmed Winslow's release on Saturday, which was first reported by ESPN.com.
Analysis: Winslow didn't have much impact during preseason games, but was thought to be a key element of Seattle's offense. The Seahawks thought they could create mismatches using Winslow and fellow tight end Zach Miller lined up against slower linebackers or smaller safeties. Winslow was acquired in a trade with Tampa Bay in May after he said it became clear he didn't fit into the plans of new Bucs coach Greg Schiano.

Analysis: The ninth-year pro told SiriusXM radio on Monday that first-year coach Greg Schiano was "kind of upset" that Winslow has not been working out with the team this offseason and told the player over the weekend that he will facilitate a trade to another club.
