The deal to bring Freeney to the Chargers came four days after outside linebacker Melvin Ingram tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in a padless practice. The addition of Freeney also helps cushion the loss of outside linebackers Antwan Barnes and Shaun Phillips to free agency.
Analysis: Freeney, 33, entering his 12th season, was Indianapolis' career sacks leader before the Colts decided not to re-sign him in the offseason. His sacks totals declined each of the past three years. Chargers rookie general manager Tom Telesco was with the Colts before being hired by San Diego in January.

Analysis: Freeney, 33, and Abraham, 34, are both older and less productive than Dumervil, 29, but might make financial sense for the Broncos, who had to cut Dumervil last week to avoid paying him $12 million in 2013.

Analysis: Both will become unrestricted free agents next month. Freeney, Indy's career sacks leader, turns 33 next week. His sacks totals declined for a third straight year in 2012, this time after moving from defensive end to outside linebacker. Team owner Jim Irsay said in a statement that few players had more impact on the Colts' success than Freeney, who Irsay calls an "artist" and a "joy to watch."
