Analysis: Bidwell injured his hip while warming up before Washington's game at the St. Louis Rams in Week 3 and didn't play. He returned to action Sunday at the Philadelphia Eagles, punting five times for a 37.2-yard average. Free-agent punter Hunter Smith has been signed to take Bidwell's place.

Analysis: Bidwell said he was worried his career was over, but an MRI and a visit to a doctor in Tennessee revealed no structural damage. Kicker Graham Gano took Bidwell's place last week and had a punt blocked. The Redskins worked out other punters Tuesday in case Bidwell couldn't return.

Analysis: Bidwell was released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this month after playing for them since 2004. He went on injured reserved in August 2009. The 34-year-old Bidwell also was with the Green Bay Packers from 1999-2003, although he missed his entire rookie season because of testicular cancer. He has a career average of 42.8 yards and was a Pro Bowl pick in 2005.
