Italy vs. Spain
Minute Commentary
Italy will meet Germany in the quarter-finals after a 2-0 win over Spain in Saint-Denis this evening. Giorgio Chiellini and Graziano Pelle got the goals either side of half time to end Spain's reign of dominance at the Euros. The Italians dominated for the most-part and are good value for their spot in the last eight. They could've been two goals up in the first ten minutes but David de Gea made two fine saves to stop Pelle and Emanuele Giaccherini. Chiellini poked home the opener after half an hour, following a free kick that was parried by De Gea. De Gea kept his side in it and before the break produced another fine save to deny Eder. It was a more even contest in the second half with De Gea denying Eder one-on-one while Gianluigi Buffon made his fair share of stops; the veteran keeper kept out Andres Iniesta's volley before twice denying Gerard Pique. Italy countered late on and sealed the game when Pelle struck home in the 91st minute. Full time, Italy 2-0 Spain.
That's it, it's all over. Spain's dream of three consecutive European Championship wins is over. It finishes Italy 2-0 Spain.
90' CARD
David Silva goes into the book for a kick on Giorgio Chiellini. Purely out of frustration, that.
Italy are heading through! They counter brilliantly like we all know they can and Matteo Darmian plays it into GRAZIANO PELLE who smashes home to seal the win. It's reminiscent of the Belgium game. Italy will be playing Germany in the last eight!
Spain have a huge chance to level after a header falls in front of him. He's stretching to reach it but gets a clean contact. Buffon saves brilliantly with one hand. Both sides' keepers have been fantastic today.
Thiago Motta and Sergio Busquets come face-to-face after the former fouled the latter. Both receive bookings meaning Motta will miss the last eight tie if Italy make it.
David Silva sends an outswinger towards the edge of the six yard box where Pedro is sliding in. The Chelsea man is inches away from getting a foot to it and the chance drifts away. Spain's hopes are making the quarter-finals are becoming slimmer by the second.
Alessandro Florenzi has done a tremendous job in Antonio Candreva's absence this afternoon and he's give a well-earned rest as Matteo Darmian comes on.
Changes for both sides here as Lorenzo Insigne comes on for Eder for Italy, while Vicente del Bosque subs off substitute Aduriz for Pedro. Pedro should've come on a lot earlier than this.
Gianluigi Buffon is again called into action, this time making a more comfortable save to deny a rasping drive from Gerard Pique.
Spain are in the ascendancy now but still trail. A cross to Aduriz is too high for him and he can only flick away from goal. Vazquez keeps the move alive and crosses to Andres Iniesta, who sends a ridiculously well-hit volley towards the corner but Gianluigi Buffon saves well.
Lucas Vazquez makes his run through a little too early and he's flagged for offside as he flicks the ball against the post and across goal. The flag's saved his blushes there because he should've scored.
A corner is sent right onto the head of Gerard Pique, who connects powerfully with it, but he can't keep it down and Italy breathe a sigh of relief as they win a goal kick.
Alvaro Morata's game is up, having not been able to find a way past his former Juve team-mates in the Italy defence. Lucas Vazquez comes on, having enjoyed a good end to the season with Real Madrid.
69' WIDE
Aduriz is a handful to deal with, with the size of him and his build. He holds the ball up well before firing a foot or so wide of the post.
Mattia De Sciglio does brilliantly to stay with Andres Iniesta as he makes his way to the byline before trying to turn him inside out. He keeps his eye on the ball before tackling excellently. Spain are incensed and want a free kick but the ref isn't having it.
Huge chance for Italy here and once again they waste. They counter beautifully and Graziano Pelle feeds it to his left where Mattia De Sciglio is. De Sciglio fizzes the ball across goal and De Gea spills it, but luckily for him there's no one in blue around to stroke home.
Antonio Conte is furious that his side don't have a free kick in a shooting area as Pique barges Eder over, when nowhere near the ball. Eder's showing the ref his mark on his body but Cuneyt Cakir isn't taking any action.
This game is incredibly open as Spain are back down the other end with Juanfran. The Atletico man crosses to Aduriz who gets up well but can't keep his header down. He comes out with a bloodied nose after colliding with Giorgio Chiellini when heading the ball.
Spain are indebted to David de Gea again as Eder accelerates away from Gerard Pique. He should be scoring one-on-one but De Gea stands tall and gets a strong hand to it. Spain can't keep relying on De Gea to perform to the top of his game.
Italy make their first change as Thiago Motta comes on for Daniele De Rossi.
Spain are having a decent little spell here at the beginning of this half and David Silva gets into a great position on the edge of the box but chooses to pass to Andres Iniesta, losing the ball in the process. Why he's not shooting there I'm not sure. Almost too unselfish.
From the corner Spain have a great chance but from point-blank range, Alvaro Morata sends his header straight at Gianluigi Buffon. Either side and Spain are level.
Once more it's end-to-end stuff as Italy see a cross put behind before a corner is cleared, while Spain win a free kick deep in the Italy half. They bring bodies forward but David Silva's ball in is headed behind by Daniele De Rossi.
The second half is up and running and there's been one change at the break. Aduriz has replaced Nolito for Spain.
Italy are on course for a repeat meeting of the 2012 semi-final as it stands. They lead 1-0 at the break thanks to Giorgio Chiellini's tap in after 33 minutes. The Juve defender capitalised on an error from Spanish keeper David de Gea to poke home from all of three yards. Italy dominated the whole half and had it not been for De Gea, could find themselves three of four goals ahead. De Gea saved well from Graziano Pelle early on, before tipping Emanuele Giaccherini's overhead kick onto the post. Despite the geniuses in Spain's line-up, they haven't yet figured out how to get past a faultless Italian defence. Eder nearly doubled Italy's lead on the stroke of half time but once more De Gea tipped over well. There are more goals in this that's for sure.
After one added minute, Cuneyt Cakir brings the half to a close.
De Gea is keeping his side in the game. Eder holds the ball up well on the left and cuts inside before curling one towards the corner. De Gea, diving backwards, tips over the bar brilliantly.
Italy produce yet more liquid football on the counter. It ends up with Alessandro Florenzi just to the right of the box, but his cross is too near David de Gea who gratefully holds on to the ball this time. Eder and Graziano Pelle were waiting to strike home at the far post.
Spain have lost their last five games at major tournaments when kitted in white, and it's set to happen again today if this keeps up. You do wonder why Spain are wearing their white strip instead of red against the blue of Italy.
Spain really need to show their mettle now if they're to break down a solid Italy defence. They're certainly capable of it and possess players with enough technical genius to do so. They win a corner after a mistake from Leonardo Bonucci, but the ball in is punched away brilliantly by Gianluigi Buffon.
Italy take the lead! The free kick is smashed at goal by Eder who forces David de Gea to parry into the path of Emanuele Giaccherini. Giaccherini can't finish but GIORGIO CHIELLINI can, as he prods home from three yards. Deserved lead for the Italians.
Graziano Pelle tries to turn Sergio Ramos on the edge of the box but Ramos dives in and concedes a free kick right on the edge of the D. Spain will be thanking their lucky stars Andrea Pirlo isn't in the Italy squad for moments like these. Italy do still have players who can strike a dead ball well.
Every time the Italians come forward you feel they could break the deadlock. In an end-to-end game Italy stream forward again and a cross from Mattia De Sciglio is sliced over his own bar by Ramos. He's a relieved man as he sees the ball go over his bar rather than into the net.
At lovely flowing move starting at left back with Sergio Ramos makes its way to the right wing before coming inside and ending with Jordi Alba down the left wing. Alba crosses low but Giorgio Chiellini is there to put behind for corner. The Italian defence have the advantage of playing together at club level, and they will be incredibly hard to get past.
De Sciglio gets the ball out wide on the left and crosses to the far post where Marco Parolo has made a darting run. He gets up well but can't direct his header goalwards, allowing David de Gea to collect the ball for a goal kick.
We have the first booking of the afternoon as Mattia De Sciglio is adjudged to have pulled his man's shirt. That puts Italy on 11 yellow cards for this tournament, more than anyone else.
Antonio Conte is constantly up in his technical area shouting at his players instructing them to stay tight and close down Spain's attacks.
Spain are coming into this game now, halfway through the first period. Alvaro Morata sends over a cross but Leonardo Bonucci heads for a corner. It's delivered by Andres Iniesta and Sergio Ramos goes down under the strength of Giorgio Chiellini. He wants a penalty but Cuneyt Cakir tells him to get up.
The Italy defence are nearly caught in possession on halfway, prompting Giorgio Chiellini to boot the ball forward to clear danger. If nearly turns into a superb through ball as Alessandro Florenzi chases it, but he can't keep it in as he slides into the advertising boards. It's hard to say whether the wet conditions in Saint-Denis could work for or against the two sides.
Spain need to compose themselves after this start. They try and move the ball about with a neat flow, but Italy aren't giving them any space when in possession, meaning they don't have time to pick that killer pass. Andres Iniesta evades Marco Parolo before being tripped by him.
11' POST
Italy hit the post! Florenzi delivers over another good cross, this time from the right. It finds Pelle who heads across to Emanuele Giaccherini, but the Bologna man's overhead kick is tipped onto the woodwork by De Gea. Spain look shaken here.
Alessandro Florenzi a super ball into the box and Graziano Pelle gets up well to send a header towards the bottom corner. David de Gea gets down quickly to push wide of the post.
The Italians look dangerous bursting forward as Spain push men up. Eder goes down under a challenge from Juanfran and Italy have a free kick in a good position.
Italy start on the front foot and have a couple of half-chances early on; Graziano Pelle sends a header which David de Gea saves well, before the Southampton striker tries to through but is crowded out by Gerard Pique and Sergio Ramos.
The big one is up and running. Italy against Spain. One will play Germany in the last eight, the other will have the tournament cut short a lot earlier than expected.
Despite defeat against Croatia in their final group game, Vicente del Bosque sticks with the same starting 11, with Gerard Pique commanding the back line, Andres Iniesta controlling the midfield and Alvaro Morata leading the line up top.
Antonio Conte makes seven changes with just Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, Alessandro Florenzi and Mattia De Sciglio retaining their places from the defeat to Ireland.

This evening's fixture sees a rematch of the Euro 2012 final as Italy take on Spain in the last 16 at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. To say Spain won comfortably that day would be a bit of an understatement. The Spaniards, already four years into the reign of Vicente del Bosque, thrashed a Cesare Prandelli Italy side 4-0 in Kyiv. It's safe to say this affair will be a much closer contest, with Spain looking shaky in the group stages while Italy have looked a strong unit, despite losing against Ireland in their final group game. Italy advanced top of their group and had it sewn up after only two games. For Spain their journey to the last 16 suffered a little blip during their last game, as they conceded a 1-0 lead to go down 2-1 to Croatia. The winner of today's game will go head-to-head with Germany in the quarter-finals.
Italy manager Antonio Conte will name a much-changed side to the one that started the Ireland game, with many players who started the opener against Belgium expected to play. One man who won't be involved is Antonio Candreva however, with the winger ruled out due to a thigh injury. Spain have no injuries to worry about and have only one man on a booking; no surprise that it's Sergio Ramos. He'll be aware that should he receive another booking he will miss the last eight game with Germany, should they reach it.
The two sides have met 30 times in the past before, with Spain winning 11 times and Italy on eight occasions. The most recent meeting between the two was back in March when they played out a 1-1 draw; that game ended Spain's three-game winning run against the Italians, but extended their unbeaten run to five. Italy haven't beaten Spain in a competitive game since knocking them out of the quarter-finals of the 1994 World Cup, but did beat them 2-1 in a friendly five years ago.
Cuneyt Cakir is the referee for today's game, with Bahattin Duran and Tarik Ongun his assistants. The additional assistants are Huseyin Gocek and Baris Simsek, while Martin Atkinson is the fourth official.
