Russia vs. Wales
Minute Commentary
Goals from Aaron Ramsey, Neil Taylor and Gareth Bale seal what is a truly memorable win for the Welsh in Toulouse. They were the better team from minute one and thoroughly deserved victory against a Russia team who looked uninspired and resigned to defeat. This is a fantastic achievement for a team considered as underdogs by many and they will be rightly proud to top the group. Thank you for joining us!
Wow. The final whistle goes and Wales win, 3-0.
We are almost into stoppage time here in Toulouse. This game has been over for the best part of an hour in all honesty and with things as they are, Wales top the group.
88' LONG
A long-range free-kick almost catches Hennessey out but the Wales keeper manages to stretch just enough to take the ball in two hands.
87' NICK
Russia very nearly nick one through Artem Dzyuba. Again it's Dmitry Kombarov with the cross and the centre forward connects but he can only steer his effort over the bar. That just about sums up Russia's evening.
The ball is very much bogged down in midfield now, with neither side having the energy or drive to really push for a goal.
83' TEN
With less than ten minutes to go, both sides would probably be happy for the whistle to go here. For different reasons, obviously.
Russia win a free-kick 40 yards from goal. Sergey Ignashevich has a go but it is nowhere near the target and only troubles a food stall at the back of the stand behind Wayne Hennessey's goal.
77' KING
Andy King is the next change for Wales, replacing Joe Ledley who looks to be carrying a slight limp. There is no reason to risk any of their players now for Wales.
Wales look so comfortable here they may as well change their boots for flip-flops and grab a glass of Merlot. Joe Allen is off to be replaced by Dave Edwards.
Alexander Samedov is on for Fedor Smolov in a move reminiscent of rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.
69' BALE
Yet another Wales counter saw the ball worked to Bale just inside the area. The Real Madrid man took a touch before lifting the ball over Akinfeev with the outside of his foot and Wales are absolutely flying here.
Finally, GARETH BALE claims his goal and it's Russia 0-3 Wales. Let that sink in.
A Gareth Bale free-kick again causes consternation in the Russian backline, but Joe Ledley's header from the set-piece is headed wide.
64' LASH
Again a Kombarov cross goes into the Welsh box but again Ashley Williams clears with ease. His header gets as far as Denis Glushakov, who lashes an attempt into the ground that bobbles harmlessly wide.
With England still level with Slovakia, Wales are top of the group with half an hour to go. That would be a result even the most died in the wool Welshman wouldn't have predicted.
It's not too far out to have a shot apparently, Bale fizzing in a trademark free-kick that looks nice but misses the right-hand post by a couple of yards.
Wales again have far too much time in possession inside the Russian half, stroking the ball around as though they're in training. Joe Allen is bundled to the ground by Aleksandr Golovin and that is a free-kick just outside of Bale's range.
From that chance, Wales break and Gareth Bale has a glorious chance to make it three - he is denied by the left boot of Igor Akinfeev however and Russia escape for now.
56' WHIP
Dmitry Kombarov whips in a dangerous cross that flashes across the Wales area but nobody in a white shirt has the gumption to attack the ball.
53' SUB
Russia make a sub six minutes into the half, Aleksandr Golovin on in place of Shirokov. He lifted the team in the last quarter of an hour against Slovakia but was unable to have a similar effect here.
Looking at the body language of some of Russia's players however you don't fancy them to get anything from this. They look languid and frankly disinterested.
Wales look a little more reserved in their play here, perhaps happy to settle for the result as it is. They will still look to break at pace though while Russia know they must push harder to get anything from this.
Sam Vokes gets the ball out on the right straight from kick-off and whips in a cross. The Russian defence look panicked and head it behind despite a lack of clear danger.
We're off again here - can Russia rescue some pride, if not the result?
Not many will have picked this result at half-time - Wales are winning in quite remarkable style, while Russia look like a bunch of strangers from a local bar that got tired of their wine and cheese and decided to strap on some boots for a kickabout instead. Taking the lead through a lovely Ramsey finish, Wales were coasting, flying forward at pace and adding a second through Neil Taylor who was in more space than the lad in that movie about a tiger in a boat. Russia have been simply dreadful and look set to crash out with only one point from a group they will have fancied when it was first drawn.
45' HALF
Again Russia capitulate at the back and Aaron Ramsey almost bags a second but dallies too long on the ball and Russia recover. There's the half-time whistle and the score at the break is 2-0 to Wales.
45' STAT
This stat will tell you everything - in the last 15 minutes, Russia have had nearly 70% possession, yet Wales have had five attempts on goal. The men in red are loving this, breaking forward at will and constantly threatening.
44' BEAR
Hopeful crosses into the box seem to be the order of the day for Russia - that approach has not even threatened to bear fruit as we near the half-time whistle.
41' HALF
This has been one of the easiest halves of football Wales will ever play and they almost add a third through Bale. He again ghosts past several challenges before firing goalwards but can only find Akinfeev who saves well.
Dmitry Kombarov looks a decent player for Russia, having put in a couple of dangerous looking left-wing crosses. Nobody in a white shirt has thus far been able to get on the end of any of them though.
36' POP
Alexander Kokorin has a pop from 25 yards but his shot is deflected wide - it didn't have anything like enough on it to trouble Hennessey even if it had made it through.
33' DIG
A shot comes in from the right from Aaron Ramsey and it seems Akinfeev has forgotten what sport he's playing - he shovels the ball wide in a move reminiscent of a 'dig' in volleyball and Wales have a corner.
Wales break at pace and Gareth Bale almost makes it three, gliding past several defenders as if they're shadows before being stopped by Akinfeev. This is crazy.
Having said that, Russia almost nick one back through Artom Dzyuba, but Wayne Hennessey just gets enough on it to steer the ball wide. From the corner, Hennessey comes to claim but misses the ball completely - thankfully for Wales no Russian player can capitalise.
It is hard to overemphasize quite how poor Russia look here. They are flat and uninspired, giving the ball away constantly and allowing Wales to pour forward. This is a strangely insipid performance and one wonders if the trouble surrounding their fans has affected the players.
24' EASY
The sheer amount of space available to Wales' attackers is quite staggering - every time they break forward they seem to have the freedom of the field and Russia look all at sea.
Russia tried to break and were caught napping at the back. Gareth Bale's clever dinked pass found Neil Taylor in approximately 11 miles of space and the full-back finished past Akinfeev at the second attempt. What a result this would be for Wales if it stayed this way.
It's 2-0 Wales! NEIL TAYLOR scores a second!
Berezutskiy is back in play, heavily bandaged but fit to continue.
Sam Vokes challenges the giant figure of Vasili Berezutskiy in the air. The Russian comes off worse and is receiving treatment while Vokes picks up a booking.
15' POOR
Quite how poor Russia have been in this tournament has come as a surprise to many, and they don't look set to change those perceptions here. One point from this group will be seen as a very poor return and Leonid Slutskiy will be fretting for his future.
13' TOP
What a start for Wales! Russia tried to break but the ball was gathered by Joe Allen, who burst forward and played a slide-rule pass in to Ramsey. The Arsenal man did the rest, coolly chipping the ball over the onrushing Akinfeev and as it stands, Wales top the group!
AARON RAMSEY opens the scoring for Wales!
Igor Akinfeev receives a talking-to from the referee after kicking the ball away - the Russia keeper had rushed from his line to prevent a throw-in, failed and then slyly booted the ball away to give himself time to get back into position.
A breakaway chance for Russia comes to nothing thanks to a timely intervention by Neil Taylor.
Wales look reasonably comfortable in possession so far, stroking the ball around with ease. They are lacking in penetration at the moment though, as they have throughout the tournament, something the inclusion of Sam Vokes will hopefully address.
A look at the Russia bench sees a typically animated Leonid Slutskiy. Did you know, his playing career was cut short due to injuries sustained when falling out of a tree trying to rescue a cat?
Gareth Bale has a shot within the first two minutes, stinging the palms of Akinfeev. Vokes is on the rebound in a flash but the flag is up for offside.
We're underway in Toulouse! This looks set to be a thrilling couple of hours.
Only a minute or two until kick-off in Toulouse. It will not have gone unnoticed by Wales in particular that England have made a raft of changes for their game this evening - if they don't beat Slovakia, Wales could top the group with a victory here. That is motivation indeed.
Wales arrive in Toulouse for this game knowing that should Slovakia fail to beat England, a draw will be sufficient to see them through to the round of 16. That would be a phenomenal achievement in their first international tournament for 58 years, but standing in their way is a Russia side with an awful lot on the line. They have been surprisingly poor, snatching a draw with England and slumping to a comprehensive defeat against Slovakia, and as a result, a victory over Wales tonight is imperative if they hope to progress. A keen eye from both sides will be kept on the situation in the other Group B game, you would think they will both be going for the win regardless of what is going on in Saint Etienne.
Chris Coleman makes a change up front, with Sam Vokes preferred to Jonathan Williams. It is suspected that Gareth Bale will play in a slightly withdrawn role, behind Vokes who is an out-and-out centre-forward.
Leonid Slutskiy knows that his side's future in this tournament, probably along with his future as manager, rest on the result of this fixture. As such, he has made sweeping changes, particularly in midfield, where Pavel Mamaev, Denis Glushakov and Roman Shirokov will start, along with the attacking prowess of Dmitry Kombarov over Georgy Schennikov at left-back.
The referee for this fixure is 42 year-old Jonas Eriksson. He has been officiating in the Allsvenskan (Swedish Premier League) since 2004, and has overseen games in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and the 2014 World Cup. According to some reports he is a multi-millionaire, so by extension is quite possibly a masochist as well given his choice of hobby.
Hello and welcome to our coverage of one of the two final fixtures in Group B. There is all to play for tonight, be sure to stay with us for all the latest as the evening progresses.
