Spain vs. Turkey
Minute Commentary
Spain eased to a 3-0 win over Turkey in Nice tonight thanks to goals from Alvaro Morata and Nolito. The result means that they go top of Group C on six points and need only a draw next time out to qualify as group winners. They dominated near enough from start to finish but didn't make the breakthrough until the 34th minute. Nolito sent over an inswinging cross which Morata headed beautifully into the far top corner. This got Spain on their way and almost immediately it was two; Nolito this time turned scorer and made the most of a poor backwards header from Mehmet Topal, as he slotted into the corner. The second half was only a few minutes old when it was 3-0. Jordi Alba was played in by Andres Iniesta and he unselfishly played the ball to Morata who tapped home the easiest goal he'll ever score. Turkey should have scored themselves but Olcay Sahan dawdled when through on goal late on. Full time and it's Spain 3-0 Turkey.
The whistle blows and the game comes to an end. It finishes Spain 3-0 Turkey.
There will be two added minutes.
What a golden opportunity for Turkey to give their fans something to cheer about. Olcay Sahan goes through on goal but delays his shot for what seems like an eternity, allowing the defence to get back and put him off.
The game's lost a lot of its tempo, which is hardly surprising with five minutes left and the game set up how it is. At 3-0 it's very hard to see Spain repeating what Croatia did and throwing away their lead.
Vicente del Bosque's final sub sees Cesar Azpilicueta comes into the fray for Jordi Alba. It's probably just so he can have a rest, being one of Spain's many key players.
In case you missed it, the other game in Group C between Croatia and the Czech Republic finished 2-2 today. What that means for the teams is Turkey can still qualify in third place but need to beat the Czech Republic in the final game, while Spain just need to avoid defeat to top the group.
75' DINK
Spain play such an attractive brand of football and make it seem simply effortless. Juanfran starts a move and has the ball down the right, before dinking it across. No one has gambled on making a run and it bounces out of play.
72' SUBS
Turkey use up their final change as Yunus Malli is introduced to the play, with Selcuk Inan going off. Vicente del Bosque makes his second change, bringing on Koke for Cesc Fabregas.
Spain string together pass after pass after pass and wait ever so patiently for an opening to come up. Bruno picks up possession and runs at goal, shooting for the corner. Volkan Babacan is down well to turn behind.
64' SUB
Spain make their first change of the night and David Silva takes his place on the bench. He's not done badly tonight and could have a goal to his name. Bruno is his replacement.
David Silva has two chances in less than a minute. First he gets into the box and sees a right-footed effort deflected out for a corner. From that the ball is played to Iniesta, who sends it back to Silva with a superb pass. After a few fake shots the City attacker shoots wide of the net.
58' EVEN
The second half has been a much more even affair so far. Nolito starts showboating in the area and tries a Zidane twist but goes down under some strong work from Hakan Balta. The ref says no penalty and play continues. Up the other end Arda Turan's low drive is blocked and put out for a corner.
Turkey are having a nice little spell now, and they win a free kick to the left-hand side. Selcuk Inan takes it but Gerard Pique is there to defend well and head away.
52' SHOULD BE 3-1
Turkey really should have a goal of their own now as Burak Yilmaz does well to get himself into a key position in the box. As he pulls the trigger he gets it all wrong and balloons a shot way over the bar.
Game over now, it's 3-0 and it's ALVARO MORATA who gets his second of the game. It's a lovely team goal as Andres Iniesta slides in, Jordi Alba, who unselfishly squares for the Juve striker to tap home. And with that Spain become the first team to score three in a game at these Euros.
There was one change at the break with former Liverpool midfielder Nuri Sahin replacing Hakan Calhanoglu.
The second half kicks off.
Spain take a comfortable 2-0 lead into the half time interval thanks to two goals in three minutes from first Alvaro Morata and then Nolito. Morata got up well to head a powerful effort into the top corner from a Nolito cross, giving Volkan Babacan no chance. Before the Turkish could get their breaths back the advantage had been doubled. Nolito made the most of a poor header from Mehmet Topal and slotted into the corner. Turkey had one decent chance through a Hakan Calhanoglu free kick but there's certainly been nothing to phone home about.
The ref blows the whistle and that signals half time. Spain lead by two goals to nil.
There will be one additional minute.
Spain look to kill this game off with a third just before the break as Nolito leads a counter. He jinks his way by one Turkish defender but takes a heavy touch and loses possession.
Andres Iniesta rolls his foot over the ball and drifts past Ozan Tufan as if he wasn't there. Free kick by the byline for Spain as Tufan is booked.
It's two for Spain! Having set one up, NOLITO turns scorer, capitalising on a dreadful header from Mehmet Topal. The Celta winger keeps his eye on the ball all the time before stroking into the bottom corner from ten yards. You feel it's game over and we're not even in the 40th minute yet.
Spain lead and it's ALVARO MORATA who makes a statement following the comments to be dropped, with a superb header beyond Volkan Babacan who can only watch as it flies in the top corner - unstoppable. Credit to Nolito for what was an equally exquisite cross.
Another chance goes begging for Spain now as once more Nolito sends a Juanfran cross wide of the far post. In all fairness to the winger, the position of the incoming Ozan Tufan meant he couldn't adjust his body into a proper shooting position.
29' WIDE
Nolito, who has shone this season at club level for Celta Vigo, tries his luck with a curler from 25 yards. It's only just past the post with Volkan Babacan desperately diving to try and tip it away.
The answer to that would be no. It's not a bad effort from the Bayer Leverkusen man but he can't get enough dip on it and it skims the top of the net as it goes over.
Hakan Calhanoglu, renowned for his superb free kicks, sets the ball down 30 yards out after a foul from Juanfran. Can he produce something special here?
Normal service is resumed as Spain are back on the attack. Jordi Alba gets forward well but his cross fails to beat Mehmet Topal who heads away.
There could be a big chance against the run of play for Turkey as Hakan Calhanoglu advances forward. He has options and tries to slot in Burak Yilmaz who is offside. Had he looked up and spotted Ozan Tufan he'd have been in.
Turkey have weathered Spain's storm well in the opening 20 or so minutes, but you sense with talent in this side and the constant pressure, a goal is imminent.
Spain are dominating here as expected. Once more they work their way into the box through David Silva. He pulls out some silky footwork before laying off Andres Iniesta, whose shot is deflected away by Hakan Balta.
Spain have a chance to take the lead as Gerard Pique connects with a corner but can only head into the ground and over the bar. That was a superb chance from a free header and he should be hitting the target at the very least, having shown how good he is in the air with the solitary goal in the group opener.
Well, we're barely ten minutes into the game and already we have a second booking. Burak Yilmaz and Sergio Busquets are contesting for a loose ball and Yilmaz pushes Busquets in the chest. In typical fashion, Busquets makes the most of it, enticing Milorad Mazic into the decision to book him.
Alvaro Morata has possession and eyes the goal from about 25 yards. He sends a low drive heading for the bottom corner which Volkan Babacan turns behind the goal for a corner. Nolito's delivery is a bad one and despite Burak Yilmaz's flick into a dangerous area, Turkey can clear.
Spain win an early corner which Nolito takes. It's not the greatest delivery in the world and Turkey partially clear it. David Silva whips it back in but again Turkey manage to survive.
Just as we tick over into the second minute Sergio Ramos barges over his man and is booked by the referee. The resulting free kick is a good one but Hakan Balta's header is wide of the mark. Ramos' discipline means this could prove to be an interesting game for him.
The game is up and running.
Just one change for Fatih Terim's side as Burak Yilmaz comes into the side at the expense of Cenk Tosun.
Spain are unchanged from the side that beat the Czech Republic as Alvaro Morata retains his spot despite a poor performance last time out.
Liam Fountain will be with you from 8pm BST for all the live action and commentary.
Spain and Turkey go head to head at Allianz Riviera in Nice tonight as the former look to consolidate their place in the last 16. If the Spaniards win then they'll be assured of a place in the last 16, and given how well the both these two sides played in their group openers, you'd say it's a sure thing that Vicente Del Bosque's men will take three points. The Spaniard's dominated their match against Czech Republic but had to rely on a late winner from Gerard Pique. Turkey were lacklustre against potential tournament dark horses Croatia and will need to seriously up their game if they intend on taking anything from the current holders.
Spain have no injury worries in the squad but it's been heavily talked about that Alvaro Morata will be demoted to the bench following a poor display against the Czech Republic in which he wasted several changes. For Fatih Terim's Turkey, Gokhan Gonul and Mehmet Topal may not be involved having sat out training due to respective stomach and leg problems.
These two have met 11 times in the past, with Spain winning on five occasions and Turkey just twice, the latest coming 1967. Spain won the last encounter 2-1 back in 2009 when a 92nd-minute from Albert Riera won them the game. With the amount of late goals we've had so far this tournament, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise if there were to be a late goal tonight.
Serbian Milorad Mazic is in charge of tonight's game. His assistants are Milovan Ristic and Dalibor Djurdjevic, with Nenad Djokic and Danilo Grujic additional assistants. Aleksei Kulbakov is the fourth official.
