Russia vs. Slovakia
Minute Commentary
Slovakia made history as they won their first ever game at a European Championship finals despite a late barrage of attacks from a Russian team that would not give up. Slovakia took a two-goal lead in the first half thanks to sensational goals through Vladimir Weiss and Marek Hamsik. Russia started the better side and went close through Artem Dzyuba and Fedor Smolov before Weiss controlled a long ball before curling beyond Igor Akinfeev. Just before half time Hamsik received a short corner and from the tightest of angles curled in off the post. The second half was a more even affair and Russia had the better chances. After Robert Mak spurned a couple of half-chances, sub Denis Glushakov got Russia back into the contest with a well-placed header. This then sparked a Russian onslaught but Dzyuba and Oleg Shatov among others failed to beat Matus Kozacik for a second time. Full time and Slovakia are second while bottom of the group Russia have it all to do.
There goes the full time whistle. It's finished Russia 1-2 Slovakia.
Sergey Ignashevich shoots and it's deflected wide. Corner with seconds to go.
We're into the final minute and Russia have a free kick in promising position. It's perhaps a tad too far out for a shot but Russia are capable of scoring from crosses.
We are into three minutes of added time.
Russia have a superb chance to tie the scores as Artem Dzyuba pulls out a couple of dummies to try and get the Slovakia defence and keeper to go down early but they stand tall and Dzyuba sees his low effort blocked and cleared.
86' WIDE
This has been by far the most entertaining game of the Euros so far and Russia are very nearly level. A low driven cross is flicked up and falls to Denis Glushakov who smashes the ball a few yards wide of the goal. I imagine many Slovakian fans would have been peeping through their hands over their eyes at that.
Turns out it was just a little cramp and Shatov is back on the ball, looking as lively as ever.
Oleg Shatov pulls up with what looks like a groin strain. This could be bad news if it is as Russia have made all their allocated substitutions.
Russia are back in it! A clearance comes off Artem Dzyuba and drops straight to Oleg Shatov. He does well to get into the box and cross for DENIS GLUSHAKOV who heads beyond Matus Kozacik and into the corner. We're in for a real treat in these last ten minutes.
79' SUB
Slovakia make their final change and bring on yet another striker in Michal Duris. Robert Mak goes off.
Russian sub Pavel Mamaev looks to halve the deficit but his effort from outside the box flies hopelessly wide of the box.
76' SUB
Leonid Slutskiy makes his third and final change as veteran midfielder Roman Shirokov comes on for Alexander Kokorin.
Slovakia nearly make it three as Marek Hamsik looks to slide in Adam Nemec. Sergey Ignashevich gets in a vital leg to intercept and sparks a Russia counter which doesn't come to anything.
The game has quietened down and Jan Kozak sees fit to make another change as goalscorer Vladimir Weiss takes his place on the bench with Dusan Svento entering the fray.
Slovakia make their first change of the game as they introduce Willem II striker Adam Nemec. Ondrej Duda is the man who is sacrificed.
This is more like it from Russia. Igor Smolnikov crosses well to Alexander Kokorin who knocks down for Fedor Smolov. He has a glorious chance to score from 12 yards but fluffs his shot and Slovakia clear.
Russia need to get a goal soon if they're to get back into this. Alexander Kokorin finds himself in the box and knocks a ball over to the far post where Artem Dzyuba is coming in. Peter Pekarik does well to head away for a corner. Denis Glushakov's delivery is poor and Matus Kozacik claims with ease.
The throw-in is launched into a crowded box and the ball bobbles around a bit before Vasili Berezutskiy smashes a volley at goal. It's blocked but the whistle had gone in the build-up for an apparent foul.
58' OVER
Russia look like they're having to resort to shots from distance now as Slovakia get numbers back. Oleg Shatov smashes an effort from 30 yards, but sees it fly hopelessly wide.
Robert Mak opts to head down the left channel this time and is played neatly into the box. He lashes a shot straight at Igor Akinfeev who parries up into the air. He has to knock it over the bar at the second time of asking leading to a Slovak corner.
Martin Skrtel is a strong bloke and shows this here as he goes diving in on Igor Smolnikov who has the beating of him. Smolnikov is caught and goes flying into the advertising boards. Luckily he's okay and gets up. Skrtel is lucky not to be booked.
Robert Mak does well down the right to win a corner for Slovakia which he takes himself. He plants it onto the head of Ondrej Duda at the front post but he can't keep it down and Igor Akinfeev can fetch for a goal kick.
Almost immediately we have a booking in this second half as Jan Durica scissors Artem Dzyuba mid-flight. That's almost a wrestling move.
The second half is underway. Two subs for Russia with Pavel Mamaev and Denis Glushakov coming on to replace Roman Neustadter and Aleksandr Golovin.
Slovakia are well worth their 2-0 lead at half time against Russia and it looks like it could get a lot worse. Goals from key creators Vladimir Weiss and Marek Hamsik mean Russia need a miracle if they're to get something from this game and qualify from the group. Slovakia started the better side but Russia got into the game as the half grew old. Artem Dzyuba proved a real problem for Leonid Slutskiy's side and he saw a header saved by Matus Kozacik. They went closest through Fedor Smolov who shot a matter of milimetres wide of the post. I'm sure there are more goals to come in this one. With the way it's going, could the Russian fans start with the violence again?
That's the last action of the half and it's 2-0 to Slovakia at the break.
Slovakia look to already have this game wrapped up as MAREK HAMSIK curls in a sensational effort off the post to double his side's lead. A corner was taken short to the Napoli man and he cut inside and from a tight angle, curled out of the reach of Igor Akinfeev and in off the far post. That's his 19th international goal, meaning he's four off equalling Robert Vittek's record.
Martin Skrtel is called into action and defends a long ball over brilliantly with Artem Dzyuba breathing down his neck. Had he got that wrong Dzyuba would've been in to level.
41' NO
It's another awful ball in from Oleg Shatov who once again fails to beat the first man. He gets another chance to send it in but floats it over everyone and out.
Juraj Kucka goes in hard on Artem Dzyuba and a foul is given. If you can budge the big Russian over you've done very well. Can Russia make Slovakia pay here?
Peter Pekarik makes a run in behind as he looks to try and help double his side's lead but he's offside. Good decision from the linesman and it had to be because he had a free run at goal though.
That goal means as it stands Slovakia go from fourth to second in the group, with England dropping to third and Russia now propping up the group. Only Russia can be top by 4pm, but they need at least two goals now.
We have the breakthrough and it's Slovakia who have it. A lovely ball is sent across the field to VLADIMIR WEISS who controls well, before pulling back and taking Igor Smolnikov and Vasili Berezutskiy out of the game. All he has to do then is smash it into the corner, giving Igor Akinfeev no chance. It's definitely against the run of play but they won't care.
Russia burst forward at pace and Alexander Kokorin is at the centre of it. He sprays it to his right to Oleg Shatov who arrows a cross into the box. Artem Dzyuba shows great awareness to dummy for Fedor Smolov at the back stick who arrived a second too late. Neat move from Leonid Slutskiy's men.
28' WIDE
Russia have the best chance of the game so far as Artem Dzyuba runs at the Slovak defence. They just open up for him and he plays it into Fedor Smolov, who lines his shot up and sends it milimetres wide of the post. That must've taken some paint off the woodwork.
Slovakia could be in here as Robert Mak is slipped through but the flag goes up quickly. Credit Russia's defence there as the line all came forward in sync to catch Mak out.
Russia are getting on top of this now and have another good chance, again down that right hand side. The ball is played in by Igor Smolnikov and it's met by Dzyuba. His header looks to be heading onto the post but Matus Kozacik plucks from the air.
Artem Dzyuba once again displays great footwork in the box and makes his way to the byline. He goes down under the challenge of Tomas Hubocan and wants a penalty. Replays show it was a wonderfully-timed tackle by the Dynamo Moscow defender.
Russia have a rare half-chance as Alexander Kokorin flicks the ball onto Fedor Smolov. The Krasnodar striker sends a wayward half-volley nowhere near the goal. That's unlike him; he netted 24 goals in 44 games in all competitions for his club last season.
Russia have some big men in their side and win a free kick on the right flank. We've seen already what they can do from set-pieces against England. Oleg Shatov whips it in but it fails to beat the first man and suddenly Slovakia have the ball in Russia's half.
Jan Kozak's men have a free kick 25 yards from goal which looks a prime position for Hamsik to have a go. Instead, it's laid off for Jan Durica to strike but the centre back's powerful effort lacks accuracy and it skewed way wide.
10' OVER
Marek Hamsik is by far the most talented man on the pitch in Lille today, and one of the most magical midfielders at Euro 2016 and he nearly scores a pearl here. Slovakia counter at pace and Ondrej Duda feeds the ball out to the left where Hamsik is. He lets it bounce up nicely before slamming a volley a foot or so over the bar. What a goal that would have been. It's been a good first ten minutes.
Artem Dzyuba is every bit the target man, standing at 6 ft 4in, but he slaloms beautifully by two Slovak defenders while showing great footwork. He lays the ball back to Aleksandr Golovin who strikes at goal but his effort is blocked and out for a throw-in.
Russia looked very poor against England on Saturday and in all fairness they have been hit with injuries to key players in the build-up to the tournament. It seems to be showing here early on; Slovakia are winning all the midfield battles and seeing much more of the ball.
The first attack of the game falls to the Slovaks who win a free kick to the right of the penalty area. Former Manchester City graduate Robert Mak whips in a decent cross but it's well defended by Russia who concede a corner. The resulting set-piece comes to nothing.
The Russians kick off the second round of games. They're in their burgundy strip, with Slovakia in all-white.
As expected, Jan Kozak makes changes from the defeat to Wales. Three to be exact, with Tomas Hubocan, Viktor Pecovsky and Ondrej Duda coming in for Dusan Svento, Patrik Hrosovsky and Michal Duris. Starting XI: Kozacik, Pekarik, Skrtel, Durica, Hubocan, Mak, Kucka, Pecovsky, Hamsik, Weiss, Duda. Subs: Mucha, Gyomber, Gregus, Sestak, Stoch, Nemec, Novota, Hrosovsky, Skriniar, Salata, Svento, Duris.
Leonid Slutskiy names the exact same team that faced England on Saturday. Starting XI: Akinfeev, Smolnikov, V Berezutski, Ignashevich, Schennikov, Neustadter, Golovin, Kokorin, Shatov, Smolov, Dzyuba. Subs: Shishkin, A Berezutski, Yusupov, Glushakov, Mamaev, Lodygin, Shirokov, Marinato, Ivanov, Samedov, Torbinski, Kombarov.
Kick off is at 2pm BST, and Liam Fountain will be bringing you live commentary and all the mach action.
Russia and Slovakia kick off the second round of games at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille this afternoon with both sides looking to head top of Group B with wins. Both sides were poor in their opening games with Slovakia providing a lacklustre display as they went down 2-1 to Wales while Russia nicked a late, late equaliser in a 1-1 draw against one of the tournament favourites England. It came as quite a shock to many that Slovakia gave such a poor showing - they went unbeaten through their three warm-up games, winning two including a 3-1 win away at World Cup holders Germany. While it's the action on the pitch which should be the main attraction over the next month, with Russia it's been the stories off the pitch, specifically fan violence, which has dominated recently. The Russian FA have already been handed a €150,000 fine and a suspended disqualification following bad fan behaviour before the England game on Saturday, and have been warned if there's any trouble in the stadium today UEFA will not hesitate to kick them out of the competition.
Denis Glushakov is touch-and-go with regards to starting for Leonid Slutsky's Russia following a calf injury, despite making a cameo appearance against England in Marseille. Yuri Lodygin sat out training yesterday after picking up an injury. Slovakia boss Jan Kozak is expected to chop and change his line-up after the rather uninspiring performance against Wales in Bordeaux. Ondrej Duda is expected to start after he netted the Slovak's solitary goal.
Today's meeting will be the ninth in history between the two. Russia currently hold a slight advantage, winning three to Slovakia's two, including picking up victories in the most recent two games. Games between the two tend to be low scoring affairs, with the last four games producing just three goals. Despite the lack of goals, Russia haven't failed to score in a game since a 1-0 loss to Austria a year and a day ago, a run that's lasted 11 games. Slovakia meanwhile have managed to keep a mere two clean sheets from their last ten outings.
Slovenian referee Damir Skomina is in charge of this fixture. His assistants are Jure Prapotnik and Robert Vukan, with the additional assistants Matej Jug and Slavko Vincic. The fourth official is Swede Jonas Eriksson.
