Austria vs. Hungary
Minute Commentary
90' SUPER SZALAI SETS UP HISTORIC WIN
Adam Szalai’s superb second-half strike set up unfancied Hungary for an impressive 2-0 win over Austria at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux in the opening game of Group F. The game had been an even affair until the 62nd minute, when Szalai played a lovely passing sequence with Laszlo Kleinheisler to break in behind the Austria defence and poke a finish past Robert Almer. Austria came back strongly but were undone when Aleksandar Dragovic was dismissed for a second bookable offence, and the win was sealed when substitute Zoltan Stieber streaked away in the final minutes to lift a perfect chip into the back of the net. What a moment for Hungary, who now have a great chance of progressing from the group.
90' FULL TIME AUSTRIA 0 HUNGARY 2
A giant roar goes up around the ground as the final whistle confirms a famous 2-0 win for Hungary.
90' STRAIGHT AT THE KEEPER
A short free kick routine sees Alaba roll the ball to Marko Arnautovic on the edge of the area, but the Stoke City man's finish is directed straight into the arms of Gabor Kiraly.
90' SHODDY FROM SCHOPF
Schopf fires off a mid-range, frustrated-looking shot that sails way wide of the target.
89' SUBSTITUTION
Nemeth gets a high-five from his beaming coach as he makes way for Adam Pinter.
87' GOAL!!! HUNGARY
It's all over now! Austria are punished on the break as ZOLTAN STIEBER streaks away in pursuit of a Krisztian Nemeth pass and keeps a cool head to dink his shot over the advancing Robert Almer. Hungary fully deserve their two-goal lead.
86' HORROR TACKLE
Fuchs goes through Attila Fiola's ankle with a horrible two-footed stamp tackle that should result in a red card but which somehow goes unpunished. The right back hobbles off in obvious pain.
83' VITAL INTERCEPTION
Tamas Kadar races forward on the break and tries to get Priskin in behind the Austria back line with a diagonal pass, but Martin Hinteregger is on hand to snuff out the peril.
80' YELLOW CARD
Nemeth is cautioned for a nasty tackle that sees the midfielder rake his studs down the shin of Alessandro Schopf.
79' SUBSTITUTION
Hungary coach Bernd Storck replaces Laszlo Kleinheisler with Zoltan Stieber.
78' SUBSTITUTION
Alessandro Schopf is given a late run-out, with Martin Harnik retiring to the bench.
76' DAMP SQUIB
Austria have been decent enough today, but they certainly haven't lived up to their lofty pre-tournament billing thus far.
73' OVEER FROM SABITZER
Marcel Sabitzer arrives late into the penalty area to meet Christian Fuchs' fine low cross with a balloon of a finish. A waste of a good chance, but at least Austria are still showing their presence.
71' HUNGARY HEATING UP
Hungary are looking rampant now; this time it's Krisztian Nemeth who shuffles inside from the left flank and directs a lovely strike only just the wrong side of the far post.
70' NOWHERE NEAR
Tamas Priskin makes an instant impact, cutting in from the right and sliding a pass square to Adam Nagy, who takes a touch before firing a wild effort well wide from 20 yards.
69' SUBSTITUTION
The goalscorer Szalai makes way for Tamas Priskin.
66' RED CARD
It's gone from bad to worse for Austria as Aleksandar Dragovic is shown a second yellow card and given his marching orders for a late but in no way malicious challenge with his side on the attack. That seemed more than a little harsh.
65' SUBSTITUTION
Austria coach Marcel Koller decides to make a change as he seeks to get his team back into this game, replacing Marc Janko with Rubin Okotie.
62' GOAL!!! HUNGARY
Hungary take the lead with an intricate goal. Laszlo Kleinheisler and ADAM SZALAI exchange a crafty sequence of passes, culminating in the latter being slipped in behind the defence, where he stretches to poke a close-range finish past Robert Almer. The Hungary fans erupt in raptures.
60' SUBSTITUTION
Marcel Sabitzer is the man to replace the stricken Junuzovic.
58' MAN DOWN
Zlatko Junuzovic, who had to receive treatment in the first half, goes down again and this time has to trudge off with an understandably depressed expression on his face.
55' SUPER SHOT
A long-range strike by Balazs Dzsudzsak looks bound for the top corner and has Robert Almer scrambling to tip it over the crossbar with an acrobatic save.
54' AIRY ALABA
Arnautovic passes out to Florian Klein on the right, and the defender finds David Alaba, who produces an air kick inside the area.
52' GERA GOES FOR GOAL
Zoltan Gera glances up 25 yards from goal and aims for the bottom-left corner with a determined effort, the shot bouncing a couple of yards wide of the intended post.
49' DISASTROUS DEFENDING
Marko Arnautovic finds himself in yards of space on the right wing and reaches the byline to pulll a low ball across the face of goal. Richard Guzmics haplessly allows the cross to sneak underneath him at the near post and is relieved that no Austria player reacts in time to stick the loose ball in the net.
46' SECOND HALF
The teams are back out and the second half is underway, with neither coach having made any changes at the break. Straight away Hungary go on the attack through Attila Fiola, who shoots low and straight at Robert Almer from the edge of the box.
45' HUNGARY SHAKE AUSTRIAN CERTAINTY
Hungary have proved a surprise package in an entertaining first half where both sides impressed and created decent chances. Austria were expected to walk all over their opponents, but in fact they could easily have fallen behind when Adam Szalai headed wide from a free kick and Balazs Dzsudzsak then dragged a low effort narrowly wide. Austria had threatened in the first minute when David Alaba struck a loose ball against the post from 20 yards, and the same player was later denied by Gabor Kiraly, but it was Martin Harnik who squandered his side’s best chance, slipping as he went to slot a Marko Arnautovic cross into an open goal and consequently blocking his own shot with his hand. This one could easily go either way, so stay tuned for all the action after the break.
45' HALF TIME AUSTRIA 0 HUNGARY 0
We've reached the break here in Bordeaux, where the game remains goalless.
43' DEJA VU
Hungary waste a chance of their own, Kleinheisler slipping a pass to his right for Dzsudzsak, who bursts into the box before pulling a low shot across the goalkeeper and wide.
41' GREAT CHANCE
Austria break at top speed, Arnatutovic exchanging a flicked one-two with Junuzovic before pulling a perfect pass across the face of goal for Martin Harnik, arriving late. The midfielder is faced with an open goal but slips and ends up shooting against his own hand. What a perfect opportunity to take the lead.
38' CAUGHT WITH CONFIDENCE
A flowing move releases Attila Fiola on the right flank, but the full back's drifting cross provides an easy take for Almer.
35' JUNUZOVIC DENIED
Marc Janko climbs to head a long ball down to Junuzovic on the edge of the box, the Austria man hitting a half-volley into the turf and up, forcing a fine diving save from Kiraly.
34' HOW DID HE MISS?
Balazs Dzsudzsak swings the resulting free kick into the penalty area from the left, presenting Szalai with an excellent chance to score, but the forward fluffs his lines by somehow heading away from goal.
33' YELLOW CARD
Aleksandar Dragovic finds himself on the ground when tracking Tamas Kadar and sticks out a desperate leg to bring down his jinking opponent. A yellow card is his just reward.
32' ANTICLIMAX
A foul by Richard Guzmics gifts Austria a free kick just within shooting range. Alaba and Junuzovic stand over it, and it's the Bayern Munich man who takes a shot, but his effort slams straight into the wall.
29' A FULL RECOVERY
Krisztian Nemeth was a doubt for today's game, having suffered from a muscle injury over the past few days, but he seems full of beans this afternoon.
26' TEMPERS FRAYING
The game seems to be getting a little bad-tempered, with Alaba going in hard on Szalai and Marko Arnautovic complaining about something or other. The ref is taking no notice for now.
23' LOW POWER
Adam Szalai watches a long ball drop all the way onto his heel and lays it off neatly for Zoltan Gera, who goes for goal with an instant 30-yard drive that fails to generate enough power to trouble Almer.
21' NOT SO GREAT EXPECTATIONS
Hungary are already exceeding expectations; they're passing the ball around the pitch with confidence and are clearly not here just to make up the numbers.
18' JUNUZOVIC HURT
Zlatko Junuzovic turns his ankle nastily as he tries to evade a challenge and has to be helped from the field to receive treatment. Fortunately the set-piece specialist is soon back in the action.
13' DANGER MAN
Laszlo Kleinheisler has looked dangerous for Hungary so far, seeing one shot saved by Robert Almer and firing another not too far wide.
10' OLD TIMER
Alaba is at it again, this time drawing a smart save from Hungary keeper Gabor Kiraly, who at 40 years and 75 days is the oldest player ever to appear at a European Championships.
1' KICK OFF
We're underway here at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux, and straight away David Alaba threatens with an opportunist strike from 20 yards that bounces off the base of the post.
0' AUSTRIA V HUNGARY
Group F kicks off this afternoon as Austria, rated by many as dark horses, get the chance to show what they can do. Hungary are the opponents, having just about made it to the finals through the avenue of the play-offs, and could struggle to live with Marcel Koller’s emerging team. Austria trounced the opposition in qualifying, finishing the campaign unbeaten and eight points ahead of second-placed Russia, but this is the first time that they’ve qualified for a European Championship finals, with their 2008 appearance coming courtesy of the position of co-host. Join me, Luke Ostler, at 6pm Central European Time for all the action from Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux.
0' ONE TO WATCH
Rarely, if ever, have Austria had a player as good as David Alaba on their hands. It might seem like the midfielder (among other positions) has been around for a while, but in fact he’s only 23, and this will be his first major international tournament. Alaba’s continued excellent displays for Bayern Munich this season suggest he could light up Euro 2016.
