Poland vs. Northern Ireland
Minute Commentary
Poland got their Euros off to a flyer with a 1-0 win over Northern Ireland in Nice this afternoon. Ajax striker Arkadiusz Milik got the only goal of the game but could have had six or seven had he had his shooting boots on properly. The Poles dominated for most of the game and started strong, applying pressure to the Northern Irish backline. Fullbacks Lukasz Piszczek and Artur Jedrzejczyk worked tirelessly bombing up and down the wings while youngster Bartosz Kapustka and Grzegorz Krychowiak provided the right balance of grit and technical brilliance in the midfield. Milik should have opened the scoring early on but fluffed a chance from six yards, before Michael McGovern kept out Kapustka's volley. The deadlock was broken early in the second half, Milik finishing astutely from the edge of the box. Northern Ireland had chances through Conor Washington and Kyle Lafferty but never provided a serious threat. Full time and it's the Poles celebrating for now. Northern Ireland need a result against Ukraine on Thursday.
It's all over - Poland win 1-0!
90' DOWN
Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Piszczek are down after colliding when trying to deal with a cross. It looks nasty on the slow-mo replays but they both seem to be fine.
Three minutes of additional time are signalled. Can Northern Ireland salvage a point and pull off the first real shock of the tournament?
89' SUB
Poland make their final change as Bartosz Kapustka leaves the field. His performance today has put him in the shop window - expect him to be linked with various big clubs over the summer. Slawomir Peszko comes on.
Grzegorz Krychowiak sends a rasping shot inches wide of the post with Michael McGovern beaten. We've already seen some sublime goals at this Euros and that was very nearly another.
Poland are very nearly made to pay for their wasteful finishing as a smart free kick catches them out. It's sent down the line into the box where Steven Davis swings at it, but he can only help it out of play.
Kamil Grosicki is straight into the action, smashing a loose ball at goal via a deflection off Jonny Evans. The resulting corner comes in but is cleared well, before Arkadiusz Milik sends an effort into the grateful arms of Wojciech Szczesny.
Jakub Blaszczykowski's game is up and he's given himself a good chance of starting the next game. Kamil Grosicki is on in his place, having just come back from a slight injury.
Michael O'Neill is going for it now. He brings on Nottingham Forest striker Jamie Ward for defender Chris Baird. Poland make their first sub and Krzysztof Maczynski is replaced by Tomasz Jodlowiec.
Kyle Lafferty has had to create for himself all afternoon and he does it again here. He flicks the ball up a couple of times before attempting an overhead kick from outside the box. He sends it high and wide but it's a decent effort.
Poland look to double their lead and some neat flowing football ends up with Krzysztof Maczynski, but he slices his effort wide of the goal.
What a big chance for Conor Washington as he bursts past Artur Jedrzejczyk. He bears down on goal but Wojciech Szczesny does brilliantly to come off his line quickly and gather at the feet of Washington.
Craig Cathcart is now booked for Northern Ireland for a rash challenge.
68' SUB
Conor Washington has had a tremendous season, having scored a bagful of goals, earned a big money move to QPR and made his international debut. He comes on now for his competitive debut, replacing the ineffective Shane Ferguson.
Bartosz Kapustka is in the book after a challenge from behind on Oliver Norwood. He wins the ball superbly but refs these days seem to penalise on any tackle that is committed from behind.
Northern Ireland have improved since going behind and are pushing back the Polish all the way to their own box. Michael O'Neill's side need a goal soon though.
Normal service resumes as Poland bomb forward with Lukasz Piszczek once more. He surges into the box before looking up and trying to pick out Milik. Norwood gets to the ball first and stops the attack, before winning a free kick.
Finally a chance for the Northern Irish as they win a free kick in a promising position after a foul by Kamil Glik. Oliver Norwood is usually dangerous but his delivery is poor and headed away by the first man.
55' OUT
Northern Ireland's luck isn't in this afternoon as they seem to be through, but it turns out Stuart Dallas failed to keep the ball in play. It's taken back for a throw-in.
Goal for Poland! He's had his fair share of chances, but ARKADIUSZ MILIK finally sends the Polish fans into ecstasy with a lovely little finish from the edge of the box. The ball is played into him by Jakub Blaszczykowski and after one touch to set himself, he powers the ball beyond Michael McGovern. Could the onslaught begin?
Arkadiusz Milik is again at the centre of the action but takes an age before shooting when he receives the ball. This allows a sea of green bodies to come back and help out with the defence and Milik is subsequently crowded out.
The second half is underway and we have one change between the two teams. Paddy McNair has been replaced by Stuart Dallas for Northern Ireland.
Poland will be wondering how they've not scored in this first period in Nice as they go in level at 0-0 with Northern Ireland at the break. The Poles have been incredibly comfortable on the ball and have dominated in every area of the pitch. Adam Nawalka's side started off with a bang, putting Michael O'Neill's men under extreme pressure. Arkadiusz Milik has looked lively for Poland but missed a superb chance on 31 minutes, somehow putting wide from six yards. Michael McGovern flew across his goal to keep out Bartosz Kapustka's volley to keep parity. If this keeps up I can't see it being goalless for much longer.
No added time at the end of the first half and it's 0-0 at the break.
Artur Jedrzejczyk does well to dribble away from defence and has the beating of Conor McLaughlin before the Fleetwood Town defender almost body checks him to the floor. A foul is given but that is all. You've seen bookings issued for things like that.
40' WIDE
There's a scramble in the box as the resulting corner comes in. Robert Lewandowski goes to head the ball but misses it. It comes through to Artur Jedrzejczyk who hits it back across goal. Several Poles go for it before Michal Pazdan prods against the side netting. Relief for the Northern Irish players and fans alike.
This game is coming back to life now. First Kyle Lafferty appears to handle in the area but nothing's given. It drops to Kapustka who flicks the ball up and volleys at goal but Michael McGovern dives across to superbly palm over the bar.
Bartosz Kapustka tries to get in on the action and has a go from the edge of the box. He gets it horribly wrong and screws his effort well wide of the post.
Northern Ireland haven't registered a single shot yet as we edge closer to half time. A ball is sent into the box which Kyle Lafferty contests. He can't win it though and Michal Pazdan gets rid.
31' WIDE
Oh what a chance for Poland and once again it's Milik doing all the hard work. He picks up a cutback from Piszczek and dribbles past three men in green, and with only the keeper to beat, somehow smashes wide from six yards. It should be 1-0.
Arkadiusz Milik has looked very lively in this opening half an hour and finally gets a shot on target. He receives the ball 30 yards out before shifting onto his left foot. His curling effort lacks power and is at a good height for Michael McGovern to catch.
Northern Ireland's inexperience at international tournaments is showing here. It's so easy for Poland to play their own game and they manage to work possession into the box. The Poles, like many other teams in France so far, don't have their shooting boots on.
Yet another Polish corner is sent into the mixer well but it's headed away from goal. It falls to Lukasz Piszczek who attempts an outrageous volley from 35 yards, but he sees his effort blocked. That would have been some goal.
Northern Ireland have their first attack but Shane Ferguson's cross into the box is met by the arms of Wojciech Szczesny.
Poland have calmed it down a little now and Northern Ireland will be relieved. Krzysztof Maczynski does decide to break from deep in midfield and breezes past a few men in green. He sends a low shot in from the corner of the box but a double deflection takes it out for a goal kick.
Jakub Blaszczykowski is one of the more recognisable names on the Poland teamsheet. The Borussia Dortmund man gets into space on the right wing and sends over a deep cross, but there's just too much on it for Milik who can't keep it in. Goal kick for Northern Ireland.
Again Poland are streaming forward and Conor McLaughlin shows inexperience and allows Artur Jedrzejczyk to drift in and cross for Milik. Milik gets his angles wrong and skews his effort wide of the goal.
Big chance for the Poles as the ball drops to Arkadiusz Milik in the box. The Ajax striker bagged 24 goals this season in the Dutch top flight but his volley is more of an air shot here, before his second attempt is blocked and cleared. This is going to be a long 90 minutes for Northern Ireland.
As expected Poland apply the early pressure and look the better side. Lukasz Piszczek bursts down the flank and sends a cross over which results in a corner. It's in towards Robert Lewandowski but he can't trouble Michael McGovern.
The game is up and running.

Northern Ireland kick off their first ever European Championships in Nice this afternoon as they take on many people's dark horses for the tournament Poland. It's a huge occasion for the Northern Irish who are participating in their first major tournament since the 1986 World Cup. Several records have been broken between these two in qualifying for the tournament. Northern Ireland became the first fifth-seeded team to win a qualifying group as they topped Group F ahead of fellow tournament nations Romania and Hungary. They've also reached their highest ever FIFA ranking at 25, two ahead of Poland. Poland's Robert Lewandowski also became the joint highest goalscorer for a single qualifying campaign after notching 13 goals, incidentally level with former Northern Ireland striker David Healy. Michael O'Neill's side also boast the longest unbeaten run coming into the tournament at 12 games. Poland qualified in second place in their group, finishing only behind World Cup holders Germany, but the Poles did defeat Germany 2-0 at home during the qualifiers.
Poland have a number of injuries to their squad with wide man Kamil Grosicki doubtful after injuring his ankle against Lithuania last week. Wingers Maciej Rybus and Pawel Wszolek were left out of the squad through injury so Jakub Blaszczykowski will be the main man out wide for the Poles. Northern Ireland may have Kyle Lafferty available following a groin strain but key man Chris Brunt has not travelled to France with the squad following a long-term injury.
The two nations have played each other a total of nine times in history, with Northern Ireland winning four and Poland winning three, the other two being drawn. The last time the two met was back in 2009 during a World Cup qualifier when they drew 1-1 in Poland. Northern Ireland registered their first win in 18 years in the reverse of that game with a 3-1 home victory. The Poles had won the three preceeding games stretching from 2002 to 2005.
Romanian Ovidiu Hategan is today's referee with Octavian Sovre and Sebastian Gheorghe his assistants. Sebastian Coltescu and Alexandru Tudor are the additional assistants while Tasos Sidiropoulos is the fourth official.
