Germany vs. Italy
Minute Commentary
90' SUMMARY
World Cup 2006 - semi finals. Euro 2008 - final. World Cup 2010 - semi finals. Euro 2012 - semi finals. Yet again Germany fall short when it matters and on the night they can have few complaints. Low's team left their swashbuckling style in the dressing room and gave an insipid performance, devoid of fluency and tempo. They just never looked like scoring. As for Italy, well they played the perfect semi final. Balotelli's two top-class finishes meant they took full advantage of slack German defending to take a 2-0 lead, which should have been added to in the second half, but their typically stout defending meant the Germans didn't get a look in. Ozil's late goal meant nothing and it's Italy who reach the final, just as they did in 2006 (beating Germany in the semis) after a domestic betting scandal. Next up - Spain. Full time in Warsaw, Germany 1 Italy 2.
90' FULL TIME
Last chance saloon time. Neuer's up for a free kick. But they've taken it short and the ref blows his whistle! Time has run out for the crestfallen Germans. Italy, against all odds, are through to the final.
90' BOOKING
Neuer is on halfway and sends a diving header back into the Italy box. Hummels then has a go at the ref after being penalised for a push - he's booked. Just 30 seconds to go.
90' MUDDLE
Buffon and Bonucci get in a muddle over clearing a through ball, before Bonucci takes charge. Massively tense moments here.
90' GERMANY 1-2 ITALY
MESUT OZIL keeps his cool and slots to Buffon's left, into the side netting. The keeper went the right way but couldn't get a paw on it. Two minutes to go.
90' PENALTY!!!
They couldn't, could they??? Balzaretti handles in the box under pressure from Klose. Penalty for Germany.
90' ADDED TIME
Low can't even watch the game anymore - he's got a huge sulk on. Four minutes left for Germany to pull off the impossible.
90' HUMMELS CHANCE
A combination of a Bonucci block and a Buffon save denies Hummels from close range. It's just not Germany's night.
89' MIRACLE TIME
We're looking at a miracle now, if it happens. A free kick lumped into the Italy box comes to nothing.
89' BOOKING
Thiago Motta clips Bastian Schweinsteiger and earns a late booking.
88' NOT HAPPENING
It's just not happening for Germany. Italy's defensive line is steady and the Germans can't find a way through.
88' WELL CLAIMED
Muller sends an early cross towards Klose but Buffon is alive to the danger and rushes out to collect. Well claimed by the keeper.
87' HOLDING FIRM
It's not quite the kitchen sink but Germany are throwing a substantial household object at Italy. Perhaps a bread bin. Anyway, the Italians are holding firm for now.
86' BLOCKED
This is what you call defending. Reus is about to shoot from just eight yards but Federico Balzaretti gets there in the nick of time to take it off his toes. Crucial moment. Kroos then fires harmlessly over from range.
85' CORNER
Corner for Germany. They may as well send Neuer up because if they don't score in the next few minutes it's surely over. Balzaretti clears the flag kick.
84' BOOKING
De Rossi is booked for a late trip.
83' OFFSIDE
Federico Balzaretti has the ball in the net but he's correctly flagged offside.
82' SIDE NETTING
What a waste this is from Antonio Di Natale. He's sent clean through with Germany playing an incredibly high line, but hesitates to shoot and then fires into the side netting with just Neuer to beat. Very poor finish. How many chances do Italy want to kill this game off?
81' PILING FORWARD
Diamanti fires across goal from the left this time, but it's not troubling Neuer. Italy are getting plenty forward on the counter here and a third goal for them looks more likely than a first for Germany.
80' KROOS SHOT
A Bastian Schweinsteiger cross drops for Kroos but his wild shot from the edge of the box is into row Z. Typical of Germany's night - no conviction. Who'd have thought that at the start of the evening? Low's team have been a huge disappointment.
79' COUNTER ATTACK
Another opportunity on the break for Italy, but first Diamanti loses his footing and then Neuer claims a dangerous De Rossi cross.
79' GREAT CHALLENGE
De Rossi earns a huge cheer from the Italy fans, sliding in on Muller with a crunching tackle. Great timing.
77' HUMMELS HEADER
Ozil's outswinging free kick from the left is nodded safely over the bar by Hummels. A comeback is looking increasingly unlikely here.
76' SHOULD BE 3-0
Should be all over now, without a doubt, but Marchisio drags his shot across goal from close range. He had Di Natale for company but chose to ignore him and go for glory.
75' NO FLUENCY
Difficult to pinpoint exactly where it's all gone wrong for Germany tonight. Their usual vibrancy and fluency has just been lacking, and those two lapses of concentration at the back were all Italy needed.
74' SCUFFED
Neuer scuffs his kick when looking to clear for a throw. He's fortunate to see it roll out.
73' LACKING BELIEF?
Germany haven't created a chance from open play in a while. Nearly 20 minutes in fact. They look like they're lacking belief.
72' GERMANY SUB
Final throw of the dice from Joachim Low. Jerome Boateng off, Thomas Muller on. It's nearly now or never time.
70' ITALY SUB
Balotelli could probably shake it off but Prandelli elects to send on Antonio Di Natale. What a night it's been for Balotelli, who has properly announced himself on the international stage. And he managed to avoid getting sent off.
69' CRAMP
Balotelli is down with cramp. The Germany fans don't like it but he can't play on and the ball is put out.
68' MARCHISIO CHANCE
Very nearly game, set and match. Marchisio plays a one-two before flashing wide from the edge of the area. Neuer was beaten.
68' COUNTDOWN
We're on the countdown to full time now - 22 minutes to go. Germany need a goal pronto.
66' DIAMANTI SHOT
Diamanti tries his luck from range but it's not troubling Neuer. He gets a glare from Balotelli for his troubles.
64' ITALY SUB
The hugely impressive Riccardo Montolivo, who set up Italy's second goal, departs the action. Thiago Motta is sent on to add even more defensive steel to this Italy side.
62' GOOD SAVE
Reus angles a curling free kick goalwards - it's too central to beat Buffon, but the keeper still has to tip over the bar at full stretch.
61' BOOKING
Bonucci trips Kroos just outside the Italy box. It's 25 yards out, dead central. Good chance coming up.
60' BALOTELLI SHOT
Respite for Italy as Balotelli goes it alone, jinking into the box before drilling across goal from the right. He definitely fancies a hat-trick.
58' ITALY SUB
Cesare Prandelli reacts by replacing striker Antonio Cassano with midfielder Alessandro Diamanti. The former West Ham man scored the decisive penalty against England in the quarter finals.
57' HANGING ON
Only a superbly-timed challenge from Leonardo Bonucci prevents Klose from getting a shot away from close range. Italy are hanging on at the moment.
55' SCRAMBLED CLEAR
Another Germany chance - they're running Italy ragged. Ozil gets to the right byline and cuts back into the six-yard box, but it's scrambled clear by the Italians with Khedira lurking.
52' FATIGUE
Fatigue could play a big factor here. Germany look full of beans and the Italians are bound to tire. They played 120 energy-sapping minutes on Sunday, with the Germans coasting over 90 minutes against Greece on Friday.
49' LAHM CHANCE
What a chance for Philipp Lahm! Tricky interplay from Low's side and Lahm makes a great run into the box - he's played in 15 yards out but balloons his shot over the bar. Germany mean business though - they've come storming out of the blocks in this second half.
48' REUS SHOT
Good movement from Reus who skips inside from the right before scuffing his shot from 15 yards, allowing Buffon to make an easy save.
46' SECOND HALF
We're back playing again in Warsaw.
45' DOUBLE CHANGE
Joachim Low has reacted by withdrawing Mario Gomez and Lukas Podolski. Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus, who both scored against Greece in the quarters, are charged with dragging Germany back into this game.
45' HALF TIME
What a turn up for the books in Warsaw. Germany, many people's favourites to win the tournament, have twice capitulated to allow Mario Balotelli to fire Italy into a shock two-goal lead. They were two excellent finishes from Balotell, particularly the second, and Germany have offered little in response. Now Italy just need to do what they do best - defend - and they'll be in the final.
45' CLAIMED
Buffon confidently claims a Lahm cross. He's got over his early jitters - Italy don't have any obvious weaknesses here, apart from possible second half fatigue.
43' HOODOO
Remember, Germany have never beaten Italy in a competitive fixture. If they end that hoodoo tonight we're in for some second half.
43' CASSANO DOWN
Cassano goes down under a sliding Badstuber challenge. He needs a bit of treatment, but should be fine.
40' STUNNED
The German fans in the stands have gone very quiet - they're stunned into silence. What does Low do about this?
38' DIDN'T MOVE
Neuer didn't even move, by the way. Balotelli just seared his laces through the ball and it curled into the side netting. Unstoppable. And what a scoreline we have now.
37' BOOKING
Balotelli was booked after the goal for taking his shirt off. Not sure he's too fussed now, but the script is surely set for a petulant second booking in the second half.
36' GERMANY 0-2 ITALY
MARIO BALOTELLI has arrived on the world stage. Yes, he really is as good as he's been telling us. The Man City striker doubles Italy's lead with a truly fabulous strike - latching onto Montolivo's raking pass over the top and hammering into the top corner from the edge of the area. Hummels and Badstuber were caught on their heels there.
35' KHEDIRA SHOT
Fantastic save from Buffon who pushes a fiercely-struck Khedira volley behind for a corner.
34' HESITATION
Huge chance for 2-0 here. A wonderful Balotelli cross-field pass sets Italy going, with Cassano playing to Montolivo who criminally hesitates when just eight yards out, trying to move it onto his right foot. Badstuber then clears. Big opportunity that.
33' GREAT CLEARANCE
Jerome Boateng is having a productive evening down the right. He skips past Chiellini and crosses into the danger zone, where Balzaretti does brilliantly to clear ahead of Podolski.
30' KROOS SHOT
Germany continue to pepper the Italy goal - Kroos with the latest attempt - but they're not really stretching Buffon. Italy look fairly comfortable.
27' OZIL SHOT
And now Ozil places a decent left-footed effort towards goal, with Buffon making the save. Better from Germany.
25' GOMEZ HEADER
Gomez glances a Boateng cross wide. Decent response from Low's side.
25' TEMPO
It's all about the tempo now for Germany. They've got to speed things up and look to get in behind Italy.
22' SHOCK GOAL
I don't think many of us saw that coming. Italy have done well to keep the tempo nice and slow - Italian-like, if you will - but they'd done little going forward until Balotelli struck. They're in the perfect position now though and will look to stifle the Germans.
20' GERMANY 0-1 ITALY
This is what you call a game changer. Germany have fallen behind for the first time in the tournament and it's MARIO BALOTELLI who has broken the deadlock. It's a breathtakingly simple goal - he nods a Cassano cross past a helpless Neuer from close range. Lacklustre defending from Germany, who made it easy for the Italians. Good work from Cassano though. As for Balotelli - well it's always him isn't it?
18' FIRST SHOTS
Italy venture forward with purpose for the first time, with Montolivo and Cassano forcing regulation saves from Manuel Neuer.
16' FRESH
No signs of Italian fatigue yet. Although Prandelli would be pretty worried if there had been after 16 minutes. Still, the Italian boss has publically condemned Uefa for giving his team two fewer days than Germany to prepare for this game. What with Low able to bring in three fresh players in Gomez, Podolski and Kroos, you'd have to say the Germans have an advantage.
14' NOT SETTLED
Italy haven't really settled yet. They look vulnerable at the back, but Germany aren't taking advantage.
12' BUMBLING BUFFON
What is wrong with Gianluigi Buffon? He pushes a Boateng cross straight onto Barzagli and it rebounds back just wide of the post. From the corner, the keeper does well to punch clear from a Kroos shot. Not like him at all to be this on edge.
10' GOAL DROUGHT
It's been a long while since we've seen a goal at Euro 2012. Xabi Alonso's late penalty for Spain against France on Saturday was the last one. Since then England v Italy and Portugal v Spain have given us 240 minutes of goalless 'action'. We're up to 250 now. Sort it out lads.
8' BETTER START
Germany have made the better start here. Podolski flies down the left past two players before Federico Balzaretti cuts him out.
6' HUMMELS SHOT
Heart in mouth time for Italy as centre half Mats Hummels directs a Kroos corner goalwards - Buffon spills it but Pirlo clears off the line. Not like the Juventus keeper to make an error like that.
3' BEEFING UP
Very interesting selection from Low tonight, particularly of Toni Kroos. Presumably he's been brought in to beef up Germany's midfield and negate the considerable threat of Pirlo. With Muller, Schurrle, Klose and Reus on the bench, he's certainly got better reserve options to call on than Cesare Prandelli.
1' KICK OFF
This hotly-anticipated semi final is underway.
0' ANTHEMS
Two staple anthems of the European diet fill the Warsaw air. Both are rousing renditions. Plenty of nervous faces in those line-ups though. Captains Buffon and Lahm then give an anti-discrimination message to the crowd. Probably the last thing they want to do, but the good intentions are there.
0' LINE-UPS
Lukas Podolski and Mario Gomez are restored to the Germany XI but Thomas Muller is left on the bench as Toni Kroos is handed his first start of the tournament. Andre Schurrle, Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus drop out. Italy welcome back Giorgio Chiellini to the heart of their defence. Ignazio Abate is out injured but Daniele De Rossi has overcome his fitness worry and starts, as do Mario Balotelli and Antonio Cassano up front. Full line-ups: GERMANY: Neuer; Boateng, Hummels, Badstuber, Lahm; Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Ozil; Kroos, Gomez, Podolski. ITALY: Buffon; Bonucci, Barzagli, Chiellini, Balzaretti; Pirlo; Marchisio, De Rossi, Montolivo; Cassano, Balotelli.
0' KICK OFF 1945 BST
It's the unstoppable force of Germany (15 competitive wins on the bounce) against the immovable object of Italy (conceded just four goals in 14 Euro 2012 qualifying and finals matches). We'll be live from 1915 BST with the all-important team news. Kick off follows half an hour later.
0' THE REF
Frenchman Stephan Lannoy is the man in the middle. He has already overseen a Germany win at Euro 2012, taking charge of their 1-0 victory over Portugal in the group stages. The 42-year-old also refereed Czech Republic's 2-1 win against Greece, when he handed out six bookings.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Anyone who witnessed it will never forget the 2006 World Cup semi final clash between these two in Dortmund, when Fabio Grosso and Alessandro Del Piero scored late in extra time to break the hosts' hearts. That continued a miserable run for Germany against the Italians, who they have never beaten in a competitive fixture (four draws, three defeats).
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Joachim Low must decide whether to recall Lukas Podolski, Thomas Muller and Mario Gomez, or give Miroslav Klose, Andre Schurrle and Marco Reus another chance after the trio put Greece to the sword in the last round. Bastian Schweinsteiger has shaken off an ankle injury and is fit to start. Italy boss Cesare Prandelli, who has complained at having two days fewer to prepare for this game than Germany, will hand late fitness tests to Giorgio Chiellini, Ignazio Abate and Daniele De Rossi. Christian Maggio is suspended.
0' PREVIEW
The two most successful nations in the history of European football go head to head in a game that has all the hallmarks of being a classic. Germany, whose vibrant young squad stormed through to the semis playing some wonderful attacking football, take on the ever-durable Italians, who scraped through on penalties against England in the quarters. They've got history between them but both are looking to create new memories by going on to beat Spain in Sunday's final. A titanic clash awaits.
