England vs. Italy
Minute Commentary
120' ENGLAND CRASH OUT OF EURO 2012
England's long wait to reach the semi-finals of a major tournament continues after they were beaten at the quarter-final stage once again, losing on penalties to Italy. The game saw chances for both teams, but England rode their luck in a big way to take it to extra-time, and just about hung on for penalties. With Riccardo Montolivo missing Italy's second penalty it looked like it just might be an end to England's heart-breaking record in shootouts, but Ashley Young hit the bar and Ashley Cole saw his tame effort saved by Gianluigi Buffon to send the Three Lions crashing out of the tournament. Italy were by far the better team on the night and in Andrea Pirlo had the classiest player on the pitch by some distance, but they will need to make more of their chances in their tricky upcoming semi-final against Germany. In Kiev it finished Italy 0, England 0, with the Azzurri winning 4-2 on penalties.
120' ITALY WIN ON PENALTIES!
Alessandro Diamanti sends Joe Hart the wrong way and wheels away in celebration as the blue half of the stadium erupts. Italy go through to the semi-finals and once again England crash out on penalties. Heart-breaking!
120' COLE DENIED BY BUFFON!
Ashley Cole's penalty was tentative in the extreme and Gianluigi Buffon got down low to his left to make it advantage Italy. If they score next then Italy are through...
120' ITALY 3 - 2 ENGLAND
Antonio Nocerino's spot-kick is coolness personified and Italy are ahead.
120' YOUNG HITS THE BAR!
Ashley Young goes for power, but he gets underneath it and sends his penalty against the bar. We're back level.
120' ITALY 2-2 ENGLAND
The pressure is huge on Andrea Pirlo as he steps up to take Italy's third penalty, but the best player on the pitch dinks a cheeky penalty straight down the middle to make it 2-2.
120' ITALY 1 - 2 ENGLAND
Wayne Rooney looks nervous as he pats down the penalty spot, but his kick is anything but and he hammers into the back of the net. 2-1 to England!
120' MONTOLIVO MISSES!
Riccardo Montolivo hammers Italy's second penalty yards wide and it's advantage England.
120' ITALY 1 - 1 ENGLAND
Steven Gerrard takes on the responsibility of the first penalty and puts it in exactly the same spot to give Gianluigi Buffon no chance. 1-1.
120' ITALY 1 - 0 ENGLAND
His run-up is stuttering, but the shot is buried in the corner and Italy go one up.
120' BALOTELLI TO TAKE THE FIRST ONE
It's Mario Balotelli against Joe Hart for the first penalty...
120' PENALTIES
The goalkeepers are off at the side receiving some last-minute advice, the physios are on to loosen some tired legs, and we are just moments away from the most heart-breaking scenario in tournament football.
120' ITALY 0 - 0 ENGLAND
It has ended goalless in Kiev after 120 minutes of nerve-racking football, and we're heading to the dreaded penalties! It's been a stunning game, with Italy dominating for long periods - hitting the post twice, seeing a goal disallowed and missing a host of chances. England barely deserve to still be alive in this competition, but they are, and it all comes down to this.
119' HART HAMMERS CLEAR
Italy work the ball into the England box, and Jordan Henderson's touch leaves Joe Hart with a decision to make. He rightly decides not to pick the ball up and hoofs it up-field.
117' ITALY CONTINUE TO POUR FORWARD
England are out on their feet and Italy are attacking in waves. Gianluigi Buffon has been virtually the only player inside the Italy half for a good five minutes now, it's that one-sided!
114' NO GOAL!
Italy finally break the deadlock... but the linesman's flag is up! Alessandro Diamanti's curling cross is right into that tricky corridor between the keeper and centre-backs, and Antonio Nocerino stoops to head into the roof of the net, but he had started his run a fraction too soon and the decision was the right one.
113' PANIC IN THE ENGLAND AREA
Jordan Henderson swings wildly at a cross and it very nearly gives Mario Balotelli the ball on a plate in the area. Glen Johnson steps in to nick possession and clear for England.
112' DIAMANTI CAN'T HIT THE TARGET
Alessandro Diamanti is picked out in the box, but Steven Gerrard does just enough to force him to rush the shot and in the end the ball flies a good three yards wide of the near post.
110' MILES OVER THE BAR
Andrea Pirlo steps over the ball and leaves it for Mario Balotelli, but it's not pretty from the Manchester City man and poses no threat whatsoever to Joe Hart's goal.
110' SOFT FREE-KICK
Andy Carroll is rather harshly penalised for a 'foul' on Claudio Marchisio and Italy have a chance to get either a shot or a cross into the box... it's hard to tell which it will be.
108' HUGE DEFENSIVE EFFORT
England have been chasing shadows for much of the evening in Kiev, and the signs of fatigue are beginning to show. The result is that the midfield is dropping deeper and deeper and it's becoming a little entrenched at the back.
106' SECOND HALF
The players switch ends and we're into the final 15 minutes of extra time. Both teams will expect to have at least one opportunity in the remainder of the game, but if it stays 0-0 after 120 minutes then you know what that means...
105' THE TENSION BUILDS
Both teams are beginning to look a little nervy as the time ticks away in the first half of extra time. Theo Walcott very nearly unlocks the Italian defence, but he opts to dink a cross rather than drill it from inside the area, and Andy Carroll can't quite get over it at the back stick.
103' ITALY SLOW IT DOWN
As the game starts to get a little stretched, Italy do the sensible thing and keep hold of the ball to slow the tempo and take the sting out of England.
100' OFF THE POST!
Alessandro Diamanti curls a cross into the area, but everyone misses it - including Joe Hart - and the England keeper is mightily relieved to see the ball hit the post and rebound to safety. Is that nine lives yet?
99' CARROLL HOLDING IT UP WELL
It is still Italy who have the greater threat going forward, but Andy Carroll is winning everything that England throw up-field, and it's at least giving Roy Hodgson's side a platform to play off.
98' POOR CONTROL BY WALCOTT
Jordan Henderson fizzes a pass into the feet of Theo Walcott, but the Arsenal winger is a little too clever with his first touch and wastes an opportunity to run at the centre-backs.
97' TOO MUCH ON IT
Ashley Young curls a cross towards Theo Walcott at the back stick, but it's a little too close to the goalkeeper and Gianluigi Buffon comes out to claim.
95' END-TO-END!
England surge forward on the break, but Theo Walcott gives Wayne Rooney quite a lot to do after holding on to the ball for too long, and the Italian defenders converge to win back possession. Andrea Pirlo fires a pass straight down the other end of the field, and Mario Balotelli is just inches away from getting on the end of it after beating the offside trap.
94' FINAL ENGLAND CHANGE
Scott Parker has worked tirelessly in the centre of the park despite being completely outnumbered in there, and it is little surprise to see him withdrawn. On comes Jordan Henderson to add some fresh legs to the England effort.
93' YELLOW CARD
Christian Maggio goes in late on Ashley Young, but he makes very little contact with the player and is rather harshly shown a yellow card. That will keep him out of the semi-final should Italy make it through.
91' BACK UNDERWAY
The game is back underway. We've got 30 minutes for either side to find a winner, and with both teams visibly tiring there will surely be chances.
90' EXTRA TIME HERE WE COME
The whistle goes to signal an end to the full 90. It's the first 0-0 of the tournament, but the game itself has been far from boring, with both teams creating chances. Italy have been the better side, particularly since the interval, but England do still have pace on the break to cause Italy some problems. This is going to be tense!
90' OVER THE BAR!
England almost make a hash of it on the break, but Wayne Rooney does brilliantly to win the ball back and switch play out to the left. The cross is a little too deep for Andy Carroll to get a decent head to it, but he does manage to tee up Rooney... only for a spectacular overhead-kick to fly over the bar.
90' ITALY CHANGE
Ignazio Abate has a problem and is replaced in what is essentially a straight swap by Christian Maggio.
90' INTO STOPPAGE TIME
The clock ticks over into stoppage time as the fourth official's board shows three minutes.
88' JOHNSON SAVES ENGLAND
Antonio Nocerino is picked out by another lovely ball over the top, and only a wonderful block by last man Glen Johnson on the run prevents the substitute's shot from testing Joe Hart.
86' TIME TICKING AWAY
The 90th minute is rapidly approaching with the scores still level. There's still plenty of time for a winner for either side, but if not then we'll be heading for extra time.
83' MAN DOWN!
Scott Parker's shot is charged down by Federico Balzaretti, and the England midfielder is denied a chance to get a follow-up cross in as the referee calls a halt to proceedings. Balzaretti is down clutching both his face and his hamstring, but there was nothing going on there and as Italy return the ball to England's goalkeeper you have to feel that they've got away with one.
81' YELLOW CARD
Andrea Barzagli goes over the ball as he challenges Ashley Young, and not only is it a free-kick in a dangerous area, but Barzagli picks up the first booking of the game.
79' ANOTHER CHANGE
Antonio Nocerino comes on in place of Daniele De Rossi, who will be disappointed not to have found the net today - particularly with that screamer in the first half.
77' ITALY CHANGE
Former West Ham man Alessandro Diamanti comes on, replacing the hugely influential Antonio Cassano. The Italy number ten has had a wonderful game and an excellent tournament, and he deserves huge credit for that after only returning from a stroke in April. It's a great story, and the maverick front-man has made the most of his return to health with a major impact on this tournament.
76' ROONEY SHOULD DO BETTER WITH THAT!
A Steven Gerrard free-kick clipped into the box causes panic in the Italian defence, but Wayne Rooney fails to make contact on the stretch and a relieved Gianluigi Buffon claims.
75' ALL HANDS TO THE PUMP!
England are under threat of getting over-run, and it doesn't help that they keep giving the ball away. Steven Gerrard and Ashley Young have been the worst offenders, and it is those two again who waste an opportunity to break, forcing John Terry to throw himself in the way of a Claudio Marchisio shot from distance.
72' GERRARD DOWN WITH CRAMP
Steven Gerrard has stayed down after that last burst into the Italy half, and it's clear that the England skipper is struggling with cramp. That's a concerning sign with a full 20 minutes of normal time to play.
70' GERRARD GIVES IT AWAY
Steven Gerrard gives the ball away needlessly after great work by Wayne Rooney, but England are fortunate that Italy take their time in getting forward, allowing the English defence to get back into shape.
67' ONE-SIDED SECOND HALF
England matched Italy on the whole in the first half, but it's been a very different matter since the break, with the Azzurri controlling the game. Andrea Pirlo is pulling the strings and Ignazio Abate is a constant thorn in England's side down the right. At 0-0 there's always a chance for England, but they can't keep the ball and are dropping deeper and deeper, so it will take something totally against the run of play.
64' DEFLECTED WIDE!
England haven't been anything like as fluent since the break, but very nearly take the lead. Andy Carroll's lay-off sets up Ashley Young, but his shot is deflected just inches wide of the post. The referee spots an infringement from the resulting corner and Italy clear their lines.
62' MARIO MAKING AN IMPACT
One of the criticisms of Mario Balotelli is that he can sometimes drift in and out of games, but that certainly isn't the case tonight. He's putting himself about to great effect as the spearhead of Italy's attack.
62' DE ROSSI CAN'T GET OVER IT
Andrea Pirlo's deep cross picks out Daniele De Rossi at the back post, but the midfielder is on the stretch and sends his volleyed attempt straight up in the air.
60' DOUBLE CHANGE FOR ENGLAND
Roy Hodgson mixes things up in attack for England, replacing Danny Welbeck with Andy Carroll and bringing on the pace of Theo Walcott for the clearly spent James Milner. That should give Italy something to think about on the counter-attack.
59' SPECTACULAR EFFORT
A headed clearance falls right in the centre of the England penalty area, where Mario Balotelli does brilliantly to hold off John Terry, control the ball and fizz an overhead kick just over the bar.
57' CLASH OF HEADS
There's a brief lull in the game as Ashley Young and Ignazio Abate receive treatment following a nasty clash of heads.
55' PIRLO PULLING THE STRINGS
Italy's two most creative players tonight have been Andrea Pirlo and Antonio Cassano, and both are finding way too much space. On this occasion it's Pirlo who floats into space on the edge of the area and slides a through-ball in towards Ignazio Abate, but Ashley Cole is alive to the danger and slides in to clear.
52' HOW HAVE ITALY NOT SCORED?!
A long-range pile-driver is parried by Joe Hart straight to Mario Balotelli. The striker has to turn to get his shot away, but Hart's second save falls to Antonio Cassano... only for the final effort to narrowly clear the bar. It's all Italy!
51' ITALY HAVE STEPPED UP A GEAR
England's goal is leading a charmed life at the start of this second half. Ignazio Abate's drilled cross is taken off the head of Mario Balotelli by a John Terry intervention, and England will need to sharpen up quickly if they are to keep the score at 0-0.
48' MASSIVE CHANCE FOR ITALY!
Daniele De Rossi wastes the chance of the game so far! Joe Hart's punched clearance doesn't have the distance and gets turned back into the box. The flag stays down as the ball drops onto the foot of De Rossi, but the midfielder rushes his shot with just the keeper to beat and England breathe again as the ball whistles past the post.
47' JOHNSON HEADS CLEAR
The excellent Antonio Cassano does well to hold the ball up and keep Italy in possession, and it allows Ignazio Abate the chance to fizz a ball across the box, which Glen Johnson does well to head away and then deflect the follow-up behind for a corner.
46' SECOND HALF
England get the second half underway and within 20 seconds almost carve out a chance, with Wayne Rooney well shut down in the box after a Steven Gerrard ball had picked out the United forward.
45' HALF-TIME
The whistle goes to end a sensational first half of football. Italy have carved England open at times, and could well have scored through two Mario Balotelli efforts and a screamer by Daniele De Rossi that came back off the post. However, England have looked a major threat in the final third, and had a great chance when Glen Johnson shot straight at the keeper from just yards out. It's impossible to predict which way this will go, but if the second half is anything like the first then it will be nail-biting in the extreme!
42' ENGLAND MAKE A HASH OF IT
A mix-up from a free-kick gives England a chance to break with numbers, but Ashley Young holds on to the ball slightly too long and Wayne Rooney's resulting cross is poorly placed, allowing Italy to comfortably clear.
41' WHAT A CHANCE!
That is the chance of the match! Andrea Pirlo's delightful chip finds the head of Antonio Cassano, who in turn nods back across the goal to tee up Mario Balotelli. The net was waiting to bulge, but Joleon Lescott did enough with a lunging challenge to put off Balotelli and send the ball flying over the bar. It's fair to say that Mario is a tad annoyed about failing to put that away, and he takes his anger out on the woodwork.
39' ROONEY HAS AN AXE TO GRIND
Wayne Rooney is again brought down by a challenge in the centre of the park, and looks thoroughly unhappy that the referee fails to award him a free-kick for the second time in a matter of minutes.
37' CASSANO IN THE THICK OF IT
Antonio Cassano cuts inside and pings a shot towards the England goal from the edge of the box, but Joe Hart is equal to it and palms the ball away.
36' REF WAVES PLAY ON
Wayne Rooney takes the ball down on his chest and drives into the Italy half, only to be brought crashing to the turf by a Daniele De Rossi challenge. It looks all the world like a foul, but the ref disagrees and waves play on.
32' OVER THE BAR!
Wayne Rooney's back-heel flick puts it on a plate for Danny Welbeck on the edge of the box, but the front-man leans back slightly as he hits it and fires his shot over the bar.
31' BALOTELLI TESTS HART
A dinked ball over the top by Riccardo Montolivo sets up Mario Balotelli on the volley, but the City striker doesn't quite catch it right and finds only the grateful arms of the England goalkeeper. After being pegged back early on, Italy are starting to take control of the game.
28' TAME EFFORT
Riccardo Montolivo goes for goal from distance after Antonio Cassano again worked himself into space in the final third to tee up a team-mate, but the midfielder's effort skids well wide of the England goal.
25' GREAT CHANCE FOR BALOTELLI
Mario Balotelli is clean through on goal, but dallies on it a tad and is denied by a John Terry block as he looks to dink his shot over the onrushing Joe Hart. That really should have been 1-0 to Italy, and Mario will be disappointed not to have at least got his shot away earlier.
24' FINDING SPACE BETWEEN THE LINES
Italy are getting themselves into some lovely positions, with Antonio Cassano and Riccardo Montolivo finding plenty of space inside the England half to try and thread passes through the defence.
22' JUST TOO MUCH FOR ROONEY
A lengthy spell of Italian pressure is eased by a long clearance, and it very nearly works wonders for England as Wayne Rooney just fails to get on the end of Danny Welbeck's flick-on.
18' HART ALIVE TO THE THREAT
A dinked ball over the top looks set to find Antonio Cassano in acres of space in the England box, but Joe Hart spots the danger and comes flying off his line to beat the striker to the ball.
17' PICK OF THE QUARTERS
It may be too soon to say it, but this looks like being by far the most entertaining of the quarter-finals. The tempo is incredibly high, and England in particular are threatening in the final third.
14' OVER THE BAR!
England's wide players are bombing forward with intent and once again it's right-back Glen Johnson who unlocks the Italian defence, picking out a lovely cross to give Wayne Rooney a chance. Under huge pressure in the box, Rooney's header clears the bar - although a defender may well have also got a touch send the ball over, it's hard to tell even on the replays.
12' STILL ENGLAND PRESS
A string of dangerous crosses into the box cause Italy's defence problems, and Gianluigi Buffon attempts to deal with the problem by charging out and punching clear. It's not the best punch and falls to Scott Parker, but the midfielder's opportunistic shot fails to find the target.
10' TIMELY INTERVENTION
England have already shown more in attack then they did in the entire game against Ukraine. This time Wayne Rooney is worked into space down the left and cuts into the box. His drilled cross very nearly finds Danny Welbeck, but is turned behind for a corner.
7' END-TO-END ENTERTAINMENT
It's a superb game in Kiev, with both teams looking threatening in the final third. England will be reasonably happy that they have already managed to cause Italy problems at the back without having to throw numbers forward, but the space that the Italians are finding in the centre of the park will be a concern.
4' WHAT A CHANCE!
England respond with an absolutely golden chance of their own. James Milner is patient down the right and eventually works Glen Johnson into space to launch a weaving run into the box. The full-back's clever one-two sees him with the ball at his feet and just yards from goal, but he can't quite get the power on his shot to beat Gianluigi Buffon... and the keeper celebrates as if he's just won the tournament!
3' OFF THE POST!
It's been all Italy in the opening stages and the Azzurri very nearly open the scoring with a Daniele De Rossi screamer. Claudio Marchisio does the hard work down the right and picks out De Rossi with a lovely pull-back cross. A good 30 yards out, the midfielder takes it first time and is incredibly unfortunate to see his effort ping back off the inside of the post after beating Joe Hart all ends up.
2' EARLY WARNING SIGNS
Joe Hart skews his first clearance out for a throw and follows that up by getting in a muddle with John Terry in attempting to deal with a reasonably straightforward long ball. That's hardly encouraging from an England perspective, but Hart and Terry got away with it.
1' KICK-OFF
Italy get the game underway and immediately look to keep possession away from England, stroking the ball around at the back.
0' HERE COME THE TEAMS
The Olympic Stadium are in fine voice as the players emerge from the tunnel and belt out the national anthems. It's fair to say that the English are out in force in Kiev - far more so than at any match during the group stage.
0' TEAM NEWS
Roy Hodgson names an unchanged England side from the starting XI that beat Ukraine. Italy look likely to be using four at the back with a midfield diamond, with Leonardo Bonucci, Riccardo Montolivo and Mario Balotelli coming into the first team.
0' REF WATCH
Tonight's referee is Portuguese official Pedro Proenca. The 41-year-old has been a professional ref since 1998 and has been Fifa registered for nine years. Proenca is hugely experienced in European club football, and should be extremely familiar to English football fans after he took charge of this season's Champions League final in Munich.
0' SUPER MARIO?
Enigma is a word too often used to describe talented attacking footballers, but in the case of Mario Balotelli it seems fitting. Super Mario was brilliant at times for Manchester City this season, but his attitude both on and off the pitch can cause all sorts of problems, and it seems to be no coincidence that he was nowhere near the starting XI during the run-in for the new Premier League champions. Add to that his controversial goal celebration after that stunning finish against the Irish and you've once again got a player who is the centre of attention going into a massive match. The first issue will be; does his manager start him? Balotelli was left on the bench against Ireland, with the outstanding Antonio Di Natale partnering Antonio Cassano in attack. The City forward's display when he came on in the second half was his most impressive of the tournament, and Cesare Prandelli may once again opt to use him as an impact option to scare England late on. The other issue surrounds his temperament – will John Terry and Joleon Lescott's experience against Balotelli expose that famously short fuse? Either way it will be fascinating to watch.
0' STICK OR TWIST?
Italy reverted to a familiar back four against Ireland in their final group game, but the big decision for Cesare Prandelli is whether or not he decides to stick with that shape or return to the back three that started the matches against Spain and Croatia. The advantages of the four would be that it allows the fantastic Daniele De Rossi to play higher up the pitch and should provide greater defensive solidity out wide against England's flying wingers. The back three would guarantee control of the midfield and give greater options going forward. It will be fascinating to see which option Prandelli goes for, and similarly which two forwards get the nod to lead the line.
0' TALKING TACTICS
England's tactical approach is one of the most predictable in the tournament. Roy Hodgson will use two banks of four with Wayne Rooney playing off the front man, and will look to the wide players to add attacking thrust on the break. Fitness depending, the only question-marks over the personnel are whether Danny Welbeck will continue up-front instead of Andy Carroll and whether Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain or Theo Walcott will be bumped up to the starting XI instead of James Milner or Ashley Young.
0' FROM THE SUBLIME…
Italy looked like a team to really challenge at this tournament when they matched Spain stride-for-stride in their opening game. Forcing the defending World and European champions to come from behind to rescue a point was hugely encouraging for an Italian side that perhaps lacks the star quality we're used to. However, the alarm bells were ringing towards the end of the final group game against the Republic of Ireland as a single goal in either game could have knocked Cesare Prandelli's side out of the tournament. A spectacular Mario Balotelli second and a narrow win by Spain over Croatia ensured that Italy did progress as group runners-up, but Prandelli will need his team to rediscover some of the magic of that first game if they are to go all the way to the final.
0' SERENE PROGRESS
The negative headlines and general lack of enthusiasm about the initial squad selection have subsided after a group stage that could hardly have gone better for Roy Hodgson and his side. A disciplined defensive display against the French was followed by two wins to send England through as group winners. However, the lacklustre performance against Ukraine in the final match will be a cause for concern, particularly when you consider that Italy are arguably the best team that England have played in a competitive match since Bloemfontein…
0' PREVIEW
How are the nerves? After talking England's chances down for months, it's almost come as a shock to find ourselves here – just hours from a European Championship quarter-final! The nation has been here many times before of course, but not since 1996 have England progressed to the last four of a major tournament... is today the day that the national team finally gets that monkey off its back? Either way there's going to be drama – this is England after all!
