Germany vs. Greece
Minute Commentary
90' SUMMARY
Well, it's not a scoreline many would have put money on before kick off. Even after 20 minutes 4-2 seemed outlandish - it was more likely that the Germans would rack up a cricket score. The Greeks did well to restrict them to just four, although on 55 minutes they were in dreamland when Samaras briefly upset the world order by making it 1-1. It was a temporary miracle, with Khedira emphatically restoring parity before Klose and Reus gave the scoreline a more realistic look. Greece battled hard but they were worlds away from the Germans in terms of quality, creativity and organisation - it was fortune, ironically, that brought them to the quarters, and that fortune ran out tonight. As for Germany, well to put it simply they appear to be unstoppable. Full time in Gdansk, Germany 4 Greece 2.
90' FULL TIME
Germany join Portugal in the Euro 2012 semi finals.
90' ADDED TIME
We're into the first of just two added minutes in Gdansk. Considering we've had five goals and four substitutions in the second half, that doesn't quite add up.
89' GERMANY 4-2 GREECE
DEMITRIOS SALPINGIDIS sends Neuer the wrong way to give the Greek fans something to cheer.
88' PENALTY
Chance for a bit of respectability for Greece who earn a soft penalty. Vasilis Torosidis' cross hits Boateng on the arm, but he's got his back to the ball trying to block it. The referee thinks it to be deliberate.
86' SPILLED
Butterfingers Michalis Sifakis spills another Ozil shot and only just claims ahead of Mario Gomez, who fancies a rebound.
85' RESERVES
Well Germany's reserve front three weren't too shabby were they? Klose and Reus scored a goal apiece and Schurrle was a constant menace on the left. Joachim Low's line-up raised eyebrows before kick off, but it was completely justified.
83' EASY SAVE
Fotakis gives Neuer an easy save with a long-range sighter. Both sides are playing out time now.
81' OZIL SHOT
Mesut Ozil owns this football match. He slaloms towards the Greece box before seeing Sifakis save his low well-struck shot. What a special player he is.
80' AND ANOTHER
Low also sends on Dortmund magician Mario Gotze for Marco Reus.
79' GERMANY SUB
Ah, just who Greece wanted to see. Mario Gomez, scorer of three goals so far at Euro 2012, replaces Miroslav Klose.
76' KEEP BALL
Cries of 'ole' as Germany keep the ball for fun. For a brief spell it seemed Greece were going to upset the apple cart, but everything is in its right place now. Germany are in control.
76' BOOKING
Sokratis Papastathopoulos is sick of Ozil running the show and unceremoniously hauls him to the floor. He's given a booking for his troubles.
74' GERMANY 4-1 GREECE
Pick that one out. Ozil slips in Klose with a perfectly-timed pass - Klose's shot is smothered but MARCO REUS makes sure and then some with a venomous volley into the net from 15 yards. He gave that some welly.
73' IMPACT
Blimey, Liberopoulos is a man on a mission. His first touch is a 35-yard thunderbolt. It's no where near troubling Neuer, but still.
71' GREECE SUB
Final throw of the dice from Fernando Santos. Grigoris Makos off, Nikos Liberopoulos on.
70' GOAL MACHINE
That's 64 international goals for Miroslav Klose now. And he's not even in their first team.
69' GERMANY 3-1 GREECE
That'll be that, then. MIROSLAV KLOSE surely cements Germany's place in the semi finals, beating Sifakis to an Ozil corner and powering his header home. It's an emphatic finish to finish Greece off.
67' GERMANY SUB
Andre Schurrle has caused right-back Vasilis Torosidis all sorts of trouble tonight. I doubt Torosidis will be too pleased to see Thomas Muller enter the fray at Schurrle's replacement though.
65' CORNER
Corner for the Greeks now, from which Kyriakos Papadopoulos nods over. They've definitely got something about them when they put their minds to it.
63' GEKAS SHOT
Back go Greece on the attack, with Gekas angling one over the bar from 18 yards. Decent opportunity for the striker. This is a pretty decent game of football now.
61' GERMANY 2-1 GREECE
The natural order is restored by SAMI KHEDIRA. He wallops a Boateng cross into the roof of the net from 12 yards past a helpless Sifakis. That's a top-drawer volley from a top-drawer player.
60' DREADFUL
Schurrle looks put out. He scuffs a dreadful shot miles off target. That was rubbish. What's wrong with Germany since half time? Joachim Low looks furious.
57' GOING BERSERK
Great scenes in Gdansk - the Greeks are going berserk. Got to be one of the moments of the tournament for any neutral. It was great wing-play from Salpingidis - he had Lahm on toast.
55' GERMANY 1-1 GREECE
Oh no they didn't! Football eh? This is why they call it a funny old game. Greece, who had about 20 per cent possession in the first half and could have conceded ten goals, are level. Salpingidis races down the right and cross for GEORGIOS SAMARAS who bundles past Neuer. Germany's defence went walkabout. Amazing.
52' TWO ON TWO
This is wild abandon in comparison to the first half. Greece find themselves in a two-on-two situation, but Gekas can't find Samaras and Germany clear their lines. A refreshing attitude.
50' OFFSIDE
There are certainly more forward for Greece here. Gekas is even in the penalty area for a left-wing cross, but has managed to move offside as well. Progress.
49' CHANGE OF TACK
Those substitutions will probably result in a change of tack for the Greeks, with Santos realising there's only one team going to win this game if the first half is replicated again.
46' DOUBLE CHANGE
Fernando Santos has made a double change at half time as he looks to change the destiny of this game. Giorgos Fotakis and Theofanis Gekas have replaced Sotiris Ninis and Giorgos Tzavellas.
46' SECOND HALF
Let the onslaught recommence.
45' HALF TIME
We thought it'd be a miracle if Greece won this game. Well it's a miracle that they're only 1-0 down at half time. The brilliant Germans have shot at will at Sifakis' goal and on another day would be looking towards double figures by now. The teams are worlds apart in terms of ability and gameplans, but while it remains 1-0 the Greeks are still in it.
45' SCHURRLE SHOT
Schurrle is getting a lot of joy from the left. He whistles another right-footed shot into the side netting as Germany go close yet again.
44' ACROSS GOAL
Schurrle sends a deflected shot wide of the far post from the left. The corner is worked short to Ozil but his cross comes to nothing. Just a minute plus stoppage time more for Greece to keep it at 1-0, which at least gives their manager something to play with at the break.
42' PLAN B?
No sign of a Greek Plan B yet, but why should there be? They barely restricted the Germans when putting nine men in front of Sifakis' goal, so if they open up now they'll be obliterated. They'll look to keep it at 1-0 for as long as possible and try to nick one on the break, as they have twice gone close to doing so far.
39' GERMANY 1-0 GREECE
....scrap that, they have now, and it's taken their left-back PHILIPP LAHM to do the business. It's reminiscent of the goal he opened the 2006 World Cup with, ambling in from the left and curling a beauty towards the far corner. Pinpoint accuracy from the German captain.
38' HERCULEAN
You have to say it's a herculean effort from Greece even to get to the 38-minute mark goalless. It's attack v defence in Gdansk but somehow Germany haven't broken the deadlock.
36' KHEDIRA SHOT
Neat turn from Ozil who twists in the box before feeding Khedira for a low 20-yarder, which Sifakis parries. Yet another shot for the Germans.
34' SCHURRLE SHOT
Andre Schurrle, fairly quiet thus far, cuts in from the right and drives wide of Sifakis' left-hand post.
33' NINIS SHOT
Decent effort from Sotiris Ninis here, who tests Neuer from the right side of the area. Neuer can't hold onto the ball but there's no one following up. Still, a warning sign for Germany. A goal for Greece now would be quite hilarious, seen as by rights they could have lost three football matches already today.
31' NO SUPPORT
Samaras is trying his hardest to plough a lone furrow up front but he's getting desperately little in the way of support. Katsouranis helps him out this time down the left, but there's not a single blue shirt in the box to cross it to and the attack breaks down. Only 89 minutes until penalties, lads.
27' ITCHING
Mario Gomez will be itching to get on the field, as will Muller and Podolski. Would it still be 0-0 if they'd started? I very much doubt it. Germany are playing some lovely stuff but they're not hurting Greece where it matters. It's goals that count and Germany have got as many as Greece so far tonight.
25' AND ANOTHER....
No exaggeration, this could be 6-0 or 7-0 already. Astonishing really. The profligate Germans waste another golden opportunity as the lively but wayward Reus crashes wide from 15 yards. Joachim Low swings his arms around furiously in frustration. Like an angry windmill.
24' INCHES AWAY
Three chances in a minute now. From the corner Reus sidefoots a cross-shot across goal and the sliding Klose is inches away from connecting from two yards out.
24' REUS SHOT
Reus tries to beat the keeper at his near post but Sifakis gets down well to parry.
23' OZIL CHANCE
This has got to be 1-0. It's a lovely flowing move from the Germans which culminates in Ozil having a glorious chance from 15 yards, but his tame shot is pushed wide by Sifakis.
22' PATIENCE
Whistles from the crowd as the Germans patiently prod it around the Greek half. Greece have dug their trenches and they're not moving. Still, it seems to be working for the time being - they've made it to a quarter of the way into the game with a clean sheet intact.
19' GONE QUIET
It's gone a bit quiet here, on and off the field. It's a waiting game for Germany.
16' PATTERN
We're pretty much set into our pattern of play here. Germany are controlling possession and the Greeks are sitting back. No chances for a few minutes for Low's side though.
13' BOOKING
Samaras is pretty unlucky to receive a booking here. He clips Bastian Schweinsteiger and while it's a foul, it was in no way malicious.
11' REUS CHANCE
Another great chance for the Germans. Reus sprints towards the box but the ball bobbles just before he hits it from 20 yards and the resulting shot is wayward. To say Greece are struggling to cope, despite their defensive intentions, is an understatement.
8' RESPITE
Respite for the boys in blue who get their first shot away, but Makos' drive is bread and butter for Neuer.
7' TARGET PRACTICE
Khedira lets fly from range but it's miles off target. Sfakis' goal may well end up being target practice tonight.
5' DAZED AND CONFUSED
Sifakis was bashed into in the follow through for that offside goal. After a bit of treatment, the dazed and confused keeper is on his feet.
4' OFFSIDE
This is getting a bit silly already to be honest. Andre Schurrle taps into the net after Michalis Sifakis spills a Khedira shot, but again the offside flag is up. That's a 50-50 call, but probably the correct one. An another day they'd have scored three times in four minutes.
2' UNMARKED
Germany will create 90 chances tonight at this rate. Marco Reus could play Klose in for a tap-in but his low cut-back from the right is behind the Lazio striker, who can't re-adjust in time.
1' FLYING START
Lightning-quick start from the Germans with Klose flying into the box, but he's the victim of a terrible offside call. He was clearly level.
1' KICK OFF
Greece get the ball rolling. We're probably about to witness a walkover or a miracle.
0' TEAMS OUT
The teams enter the fray, meaning we're just a couple of minutes away from kick off. Only seven teams remain in Euro 2012 from the 16 that began it. That will soon be six.
0' LINE-UPS
Joachim Low springs a surprise or three with his line-up, leaving Thomas Muller, Mario Gomez and Lukas Podolski on the bench. It's a clear sign that he thinks Germany can win the game without them and is sure to fire up the Greeks even further. Marco Reus, Andre Schurrle and Miroslav Klose are handed starts, while the suspension-free Jerome Boateng replaces Lars Bender. Grigoris Makos replaces the suspended Giorgos Karagounis for Greece, who also bring in Sotiris Ninis for Theofanis Gekas. Full line-ups: GERMANY: Neuer; Boateng, Hummels, Badstuber, Lahm; Khedira, Schweinsteiger; Reus, Ozil, Schurrle; Klose. GREECE: Sifakis; Torosidis, Sokratis, Papadopoulos, Tzavellas; Makos, Maniatis, Katsouranis; Ninis, Salpingidis, Samaras.
0' KICK OFF 1945 BST
Greece are likely to prove stubborn opponents but can anyone stop the might of Germany bulldozing their way through to the semi-finals? A fascinating evening awaits in Gdansk and we'll be live from 1915 BST with the official team news. Kick off follows at 1945 BST.
0' THE REF
Slovenian referee Damir Skomina takes charge of his third game of the tournament. He controversially denied Holland two penalty appeals in their 1-0 defeat to Denmark, before showing four yellow cards in a non-eventful handling of England's 3-2 win over Sweden.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
Past form doesn't bode well for Greece, who have never beaten Germany. Their most recent meeting came in qualification for the 2002 World Cup - Germany won 2-0 at home and then 4-2 in Athens, with Miroslav Klose and Michael Ballack on the scoresheet.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
Joachim Loew has a selection dilemma with Jerome Boateng available again after suspension. He was replaced by Lars Bender for the 2-1 win over Denmark, in which Bender scored the decisive goal. Greece will be without influential captain and match-winner against Russia, Giorgos Karagounis, who picked up a harsh booking for diving in that game and is suspended.
0' PREVIEW
It's not often a David v Golliath clash springs up in the quarter finals of a major tournament, but even though Greece miraculously won the tournament just eight years ago, this surely is one. Germany are most people's favourites to win Euro 2012 and, having won all three of their group games comfortably, arrive in Gdansk in supreme confidence. But anyone who saw the jubilant scenes at the end of Greece's convincing win over Russia will know that Fernando Santos has created a togetherness and team spirit which could go a long way to upsetting the Germans. Add a political hot potato of tough austerity measures into the mix and Greece have all the motivation they need.
