Czech Republic vs. Poland
Minute Commentary
90' SUMMARY
Full credit to Michal Bilek's side, who gave a tournament performance of real class this evening. After withstanding a Poland onslaught in the opening stages, they calmly took hold on the game, dominating possession and carving out the odd chance. They ramped it up after the break and finally got their just rewards when Petr Jiracek beat Tyton with a cool finish on the break. As for the Poles, well they came up woefully short when it mattered. They just couldn't rouse themselves for a big finish, running out of ideas and energy. So somehow the Czech Republic and Greece reach the quarter finals - who'd have thought that just a couple of hours ago? Full time in Wroclaw, Czech Republic 1 Poland 0.
90' FULL TIME
And that's full time! Incredible end there, with Lewandowski's hammered shot beating Cech before Kadlec got in the way with a tremendous clearing header. Poland drop to their collective knees as the whistle blows, while the Czechs start celebrating.
90' OFF THE LINE!!
The Czechs are nearly dumped out! Poland have a shot cleared off the line by Kadlec! Amazing scenes.
90' FOUL
Chance for Poland to lump it into the box from a deep free kick, but Boenisch is penalised and the Czechs survive. Just 90 seconds for them to see this through and reach the quarter finals.
90' ADDED TIME
Four minutes left in Wroclaw. It's still Greece 1-0 Russia.
90' CZECH REPUBLIC SUB
Third and final change from the Czechs as they eat up a few seconds. Tomas Pekhart is on for the hard-working Baros.
90' BOOKING
Damien Perquis is booked for a late trip as the Czechs look to break.
89' DECENT MOVE
First decent move from Poland in around an hour. Lukasz Piszczek's cross reaches Lewandowski who nods wide via a deflection. The corner comes to nothing. Surely no time for two Polish goals now.
87' CZECH REPUBLIC SUB
The impressive Vaclav Pilar is replaced by Jan Rezek. But not before a few handbags ensue as the Czech man departs slowly. Poland take issue with that and from the melee Jaroslav Plasil and Jakub Blaszczykowski are booked.
86' OFFSIDE
Marcin Wasilewski sends a decent header onto the roof of the net, but he's already been flagged offside.
85' NOT HAPPENING
Poland need to score twice but it's just not happening. At least they're on the attack though. They haven't done that since the early part of the first half. What an underwhelming night for the hosts it's been.
83' CZECH REPUBLIC SUB
The goalscorer Jiracek departs. Although if it's because of that blow to the head a minute ago he's a big softy. He looks fine to be fair - it's a tactical change. Frantisek Rajtoral is on.
80' BLOCKED
Corner for Poland, Cech punches clear to Lukasz Piszczek who hammers his shot at Jiracek. He's out for the count.
78' TWO NEEDED
The Polish fans are getting behind their team but it looks like it'll be to no avail. Two goals for the hosts in the final 12 minutes look very unlikely indeed.
77' OFFSIDE
Baros has the ball in the net but is marginally flagged offside.
75' AS THINGS STAND
Russia are now heading out of the tournament, courtesy of an inferior head to head record against Greece. Because Greece are beating them, obviously. In a three-team tie on points it goes down to goal difference, hence why the conundrum has now changed wildly in Warsaw. The Czechs are through on six points, Greece and Russia have four, Poland two.
74' DOUBLE CHANGE
Franciszek Smuda has made two substitutions since the restart. Pawel Brozek and Adrian Mierzejewski have replaced Ludovic Obraniak and Rafal Murawski.
72' CZECH REPUBLIC 1-0 POLAND
Well, it's been coming. The Czech Republic have found a hero in PETR JIRACEK, who finally breaks the deadlock in Wroclaw. Poland lose the ball in midfield and Baros races forward before feeding Jiracek - he skips inside Wasilewski and fires under Tyton from eight yards.
70' 20 TO GO
Just 20 minutes to go then and both Czech Republic and Poland are crashing out of Euro 2012. Inspiration is badly required - time for someone to make himself a hero.
68' BAROS SHOT
Quick-fire break from the Czechs with Jiracek leading the way. He passes to Baros, who cuts inside from the left and sends a low 20-yarder at Tyton. Disappointing finish.
65' SIVOK CHANCE
The latest Czech free kick yields a great chance. Sivok sees a point-blank header blocked by Tyton, who was fortunate it came straight at him.
64' WITH A WHIMPER
Sad to see the Poles going out with a whimper, but that's exactly what's happening at the moment. They're giving away endless fouls and are barely venturing into the Czech half.
63' OVER THE BAR
The free kick comes to nothing, but the Czechs soon win another one near the right touchline. It's swung to Gebre Selassie, who nods over the bar. Tyton hasn't had much to do today.
61' BOOKING
Marcin Wasilewski brings down Limbersky inches outside the box on the left. He's nowhere near the ball. Good set piece opportunity coming up for the Czechs.
59' KNIFE EDGE
If this was a friendly match, or a dead rubber, you'd say it was a dreadful game of football. But because there's so much riding on it, you can't take your eyes off it. The tension levels are pretty high now, but another 20 minutes at 0-0 and they'll be off the charts. It's on a knife edge.
56' POLAND SUB
Franciszek Smuda looks to change the momentum of this game, sending on Kamil Grosicki. Polanski departs, so that's the last we'll see of him in this tournament unless Poland reach the semi finals.
55' OUT OF STEAM
Poland just look out of steam and out of ideas. They started the match so brightly, too. The Czechs' tournament experience is certainly showing through, even if they're not yet winning this match.
54' SIDE NETTING
David Limbersky toe-pokes into the side netting from the left of the box. The Czechs continue to dominate.
52' WINNER TAKES ALL
Remember, whatever happens in Warsaw it's still winner takes all here. The only way Greece will go through is if this match ends as a draw (or if they hand Russia a thrashing). If the Czechs or Poland win, they're through.
51' SAME AGAIN
The Czechs have started the second as they ended the first - using the ball wisely and trying to thread their way through the Polish defence.
48' BOOKING
Polanski wipes out Vaclav Pilar with a ferocious challenge. That's a booking, and one which rules him out of the quarters if Poland make it.
46' SECOND HALF
Expect a change of tack from the Czechs now, as a draw is no longer good enough for them if the Greeks are winning.
45' GROUP A UPDATE
News from Warsaw where Greece have taken a shock lead against Russia through Karagounis. The width of a cigarette paper now separates the four Group A teams. The table reads as follows: Russia 4pts, +2 GD - Greece 4pts, 0 GD - Czech 4pts, -2 GD - Poland 3pts, 0 GD. Tight.
45' HALF TIME
It's as delicately poised as they come in Wroclaw, where tension fills the thunderous skies. Poland started brilliantly but couldn't find an early goal, then they began to tighten up and the miserly Czechs took charge with their patient possession game. This game needs a goal, preferably for the Poles as it'd bring Czech Republic out, but it's still making for fascinating viewing.
43' ROW Z
A rare Poland attack yields a corner. It's cleared to Lukasz Piszczek who blazes an awful shot into row Z.
41' PILAR SHOT
If the Czechs score here it'll take an almighty turnaround for Poland to win. They're stifling the hosts. Another long passing move ends when Vaclav Pilar gets two bites of the cherry at a shot just inside the box. Tyton makes a relatively comfortable save.
39' PLASIL SHOT
Heart in mouth moment for the Poles. After a prolonged build-up Jaroslav Plasil hits a 20-yard shot which deflects into Tyton's arms. Plasil slipped off the soaking surface as he hit it.
37' JUST SHORT
Excellent run from Baros who escapes the Polish back line and nearly gets on the end of a Plasil cross from the left. He's just short, though, and Tyton collects.
36' GOAL NEEDED
We really could do with a goal here. Poland's early positivity has given way to caution, while the Czechs are still happy to stroke the ball around patiently.
34' GROUP A UPDATE
It's still 0-0 in Warsaw between Russia and Greece. That suits the Czechs just fine - as things stand they're joining Russia in the quarter finals.
31' TOMAS MISSED
The Czechs get great width with Theodor Gebre Selassie and Vaclav Pilar but there's not much coming from midfield. They really miss Tomas Rosicky.
30' CONDITIONS
It's still pouring it down in Wroclaw. The pitch is still completely playable, but might be one to keep an eye on.
29' CORNER
Corner for the Czechs, who are starting to move into the game a bit more with Poland's momentum subsiding. Tomas Hubschman nods the left-wing corner well wide of the post.
26' GONE QUIET
It's gone a bit quiet here, on and off the pitch. Not in the skies though - we've just heard our first rumble of thunder of the evening. Let's hope it's not that storm from Donetsk last night.
23' BOOKING
Rafal Murawski drags back Milan Baros and earns a booking from Craig Thomson.
21' GOOD EFFORT
The ball sits up nicely for Sebastian Boenisch and he nearly makes the most of it, sending a bouncing 25-yard effort towards the bottom corner. Cech carefully pushes wide.
18' RISKY
We're still waiting to see much of the Czechs as an attacking force. Very much looks like they're playing for a draw, but that's a risky strategy against this vibrant Polish attack. And if Greece beat Russia the Czechs will be in trouble.
15' POLANSKI SHOT
How bad are the Czechs at the back? Very little organisation to speak of here, and next to no protection from midfield. Eugen Polanski is given room to shoot wildly over from 15 yards.
14' GREAT START
Great start from the hosts, this. The Czechs may have forged the best opportunity but Poland have enjoyed most of the possession and are peppering Cech's box with crosses and free kicks.
13' BOENISCH SHOT
The resulting free kick is heading in before Michal Kadlec nods clear ahead of Cech. The ball then drops to Sebastian Boenisch who drives the rebound wide. More anguish for the Poles.
12' BOOKING
David Limbersky picks up the first yellow card of the evening. His sliding tackle on Jakub Blaszczykowski is certainly late enough to earn one.
10' LEWANDOWSKI CHANCE
We could easily have had two or three goals in the opening ten minutes. You'd back Robert Lewandowski to do better with this as well. With the Czech defence all over the place the Dortmund man races into the box but crashes wide left-footed, slightly off balance.
8' SMOTHERED
Good goalkeeping from Cech who darts from his line to smother the ball at Jakub Blaszczykowski's feet. Obraniak played a lovely ball into the box there.
7' DEJA VU
Side netting again for the Poles, this time from a Ludovic Obraniak free kick. Good, open start here.
4' BIG CHANCE
Superb opportunity here for the Czechs. Flying full-back Theodor Gebre Selassie makes his way to the right byline before cutting the ball back to the penalty spot where Vaclav Pilar completely fluffs his free shot. What a chance to silence the home fans.
2' SIDE NEETTING
Great initiative from Dariusz Dudka who sends an overhead kick into the side netting after a bit of ping pong in the Czech box.
1' GROUP A CLIMAX
We'll keep you up to date with events in the other Group A fixture, where Russia play Greece. If Greece fail to win that game, then the permutations are pretty simple - the winner here will progress along with Russia, while a draw sends the Czechs through.
1' KICK OFF
Poland get their night of destiny underway.
0' TEAMS OUT
The teams are out in Wroclaw, where it's teeming it down with rain. Wonderful atmosphere here. A great night lies in store.
0' THE REF
Scotland's Craig Thomson is tonight's ref. He took charge of Portugal's 3-2 win over Denmark on Wednesday, flashing four yellow cards. Last season Thomson handed out 134 yellow cards and ten red in 37 games.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
These two sides have only ever met on five occasions, with Poland having the edge on three wins to two. They were paired in qualification for the 2010 World Cup, when Poland won 2-1 at home thanks to goals from Pawel Brozek - on the bench tonight - and current captain Jakub Blaszczykowski. The Czechs got their revenge in the reverse fixture, with Tomas Necid and Jaroslav Plasil giving them a 2-0 victory.
0' TEAM NEWS
Star midfield Tomas Rosicky misses out through injury for the Czech Republic, so Daniel Kolar starts in midfield. Przsemyslaw Tyton keeps his place in goal for Poland, despite the fact Wojciech Szczesny is free of suspension. Not a good night for Arsenal players, then. Full line-ups: CZECH REPUBLIC: Cech; Gebre Selassie, Sivok, Kadlec, Limbersky; Hubschman, Plasil; Jiracek, Kolar, Pilar; Baros. POLAND: Tyton; Piszczek, Wasilewski, Perquis, Boenisch; Murawski, Polanski, Dudka; Blaszczykowski, Lewandowski, Obraniak.
0' PREVIEW
At every major tournament the hosts usually end up being everyone's favourite second team and that's certainly the case at Euro 2012, particularly with the Poles who have created such a fanatical atmosphere in their first two matches. But the dream could be over tonight Franciszek Smuda's side who are effectively in a knockout situation already, needing to beat the Czech Republic to stay in the tournament. However, with 50,000 Czechs expected to descend on Wroclaw, the 'visitors' will be well backed, and they have the tournament know-how to see this one through. Either way, it should be a dramatic evening.
