Sweden vs. England
Minute Commentary
90' SUMMARY
They sure know how to put everyone through the wringer, don't they? England have beaten Sweden for the first time in a competitive international in the most thrilling - and nerve-jangling - of circumstances. Seemingly in control, 1-0 up and having been rarely threatened, England briefly capitulated, conceding two extremely soft goals in ten minutes. Hodgson, whose selection of Andy Carroll had paid off in the first half, got it right again when he sent on Theo Walcott to change the game, which the Arsenal man did in style. He sent a 25-yarder past an unsighted Isaksson to equalise, then seared past two defenders to set up Welbeck for the cutest of winners. It was a free-for-all in the second half, but England edged it and they've dumped Sweden out of the tournament in the process. Who said England were boring under Roy Hodgson? Full time in Kiev, Sweden 2 England 3.
90' FULL TIME
You can breathe again now. England have won.
90' OLSSON HEADER
Woeful header from Jonas Olsson from possibly Sweden's last chance. That should be that.
90' SECONDS LEFT
And now Oxlade-Chamberlain can't get on the end of a through ball. He was clean through if he had. Sweden have given up on defending - just seconds to go now.
90' MUST SCORE
Chance to kill the game but Gerrard blows it - England race clear three on three and Walcott cuts the ball inside, where the Liverpool midfielder volley straight at Isaksson.
90' INTO THE STANDS
Gerrard blasts the free kick into the stands.
90' ADDED TIME
We've got four minutes to go. England have a free kick, 35 yards from Sweden's goal. Svensson saw yellow for the challenge.
89' ENGLAND SUB
Potential match-winner Danny Welbeck is given a great ovation from the England fans. It was such a clever goal he scored - great instinct. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is sent on to stretch those tired Sweden legs.
89' DESPERATE
The increasingly desperate Swedes are chucking the ball into Hart's penalty area, but England are holding firm. Can't imagine there'll be too much stoppage time. Four minutes at the most.
87' DANGER
Potential danger from a right-wing Kallstrom free kick, but England clear their lines. Time is running out for the Swedes.
86' CLOSE CALLS
England don't look at all assured at the back. Plenty of close calls in terms of crosses flashing into the box. Remember, if Sweden don't score they're out of the competition.
84' SLOWING THINGS DOWN
England are slowing things down, if and when they can. Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was primed and ready before Welbeck's goal, is still stood on the touchline, presumably if Walcott can't carry on.
82' WALCOTT DOWN
This doesn't look good - Theo Walcott seems to be in some pain. Calf problem.
82' PARKER SHOT
Promising counter from England with Carroll, Walcott and Welbeck involved. It's a damp squib of a finish though when Parker crashes miles over the bar.
81' SWEDEN SUB
Christian Wilhelmsson, who made a positive impact against Ukraine, will look to do so again now. Rasmus Elm departs.
79' SWEDEN SUB
Johan Elmander is cream crackered and can play on no more. Markus Rosenberg is sent on to find an equaliser for Sweden.
77' HIGH DRAMA
It's high drama in Kiev and you wouldn't want to put your mortgage on a winner. Even a tenner would be risking it a bit.
76' GREAT SAVE
Sweden are making their move. Zlatan tests Hart to the full with a searing effort from outside the box, which a diving Hart tips wide. Great effort.
75' KALLSTROM CHANCE
Wonderful play from Martin Olsson who skips past Johnson and Walcott from the left byline and tees up Kim Kallstrom, who blazes over from 15 yards. Big chance that. Enterprising wingplay from Olsson. Haven't seen much of that from Johnson or Cole.
74' FREE KICK
Young tries to make amends for his below-par evening with a 25-yard free kick, but he curls it comfortably over the bar.
73' OPTIONS
Plenty of options for Hodgson in these final 73 minutes, Oxlade-Chamberlain being one. Ashley Young has been dreadful tonight - possibly his worst game in an England shirt. Very ineffective. Jermain Defoe is another option, perhaps for the quiet Welbeck.
70' STRETCHED
Play is becoming increasingly stretched. Not sure if that suits England, but in theory it should do. Both sides are far more attack-minded than they were before the break, and it's making for a far better game.
70' CARROLL SHOT
Andy Carroll is full of beans. He curls an ambitous 20-yarder over Isaksson's bar.
67' END TO END
You can't take your eyes off this. Kallstrom sees a shot blocked by Hart before Carroll races towards the box at the other end. He's stopped in his tracks by a cruching Mellberg challenge. He's been a rock tonight, the former Villa man.
65' SWEDEN SUB
Erik Hamren swaps the injured Andreas Granqvist for Mikael Lustig.
64' SWEDEN 2-2 ENGLAND
Welcome back, THEO WALCOTT! It's been a while, but the Arsenal man has reintroduced himself onto the international stage with an absolutely massive goal for England. The corner is half cleared and Walcott sends a swerving thunderbolt right down the middle of the goal - Isaksson is fooled by the flight and unsighted by a crowd of bodies. He doesn't even stick a hand out.
63' TERRY CHANCE
It's all happening here. Johnson swings over from the right and Terry heads goalwards from six yards - it somehow hits Isaksson and clears the bar.
63' BOOKING
Two goals (possibly) and now a booking for the busy Mellberg, for a late trip.
62' COUNTER
Sweden break from that corner and Zlatan races into the box, before another great Johnson challenge tames his shot and Hart collects.
61' BOUNCING
Corner for England, but Gerrard's outswinger comes to nothing. Kiev is bouncing to the tune of 20,000 ecstatic Swedes.
61' ENGLAND SUB
Hodgson reacts by replacing James Milner with Theo Walcott. England are lacking pace - that's a good move.
59' SWEDEN 2-1 ENGLAND
Oh England. This is Sunday League defending. No one bothers to pick up 6ft 1in defender OLOF MELLBERG who has the simplest of tasks, sending a six-yard header past Hart from a deep left wing free kick. This game has been turned on its head, by Olof Mellberg of all people.
57' BOOKING
Milner deservedly sees yellow for tripping the gallivanting Martin Olsson.
56' ON TOP
It's Sweden on top in Kiev. Johnson has to be alert to stop a right-wing cross from reaching Elm.
55' BRAVE
England need to be brave here. A draw is leaving too much to chance - they've got to treat it as a knockout game and go for the win, surely. But to do that they may need to expand and play some proper football. They've been too cumbersome when in the Sweden half.
52' OWN GOAL
Looks like that Sweden equaliser will go down as a Glen Johnson own goal. He could do nothing about it, with Hart pushing it onto his chest.
51' MOMENTUM
Exactly what England didn't want, then. Sweden now have all the momentum, although whether they push hard for the win or play for the draw is unknown. Ditto England, really.
49' SWEDEN 1-1 ENGLAND
This is soft. Very soft. Zlatan's resulting free kick crashes back off the wall - he volleys back into the box and the ball falls for OLOF MELLBERG, in acres of space, and he sidefoots in via a Hart fingertip and a deflection off a diving Johnson. England are a bit unlucky there, but they were slow to react to Mellberg picking it up.
48' WARNING
Andy Carroll is lucky to avoid a booking here. He slides in late on Kallstrom, 30 yards from Hart's goal, but the referee just gives him a talking-to.
46' SECOND HALF
Both sides are unchanged for the second half.
45' HALF TIME
Fairly straightforward for England but they've got plenty of work to do after the break. Carroll's towering header is the difference on paper and in reality England have been slightly the better side, albeit without creating too many chances. Sweden look vulnerable at the back and predictable going forward, Zlatan aside. It's all about the next goal now.
43' MOORE-ESQUE
Welbeck, quiet thus far, spins Jonas Olsson on halfway and races into the Sweden third, surrounded by five defenders and with no team mate in sight. He makes it to penalty area before old hand Mellberg stops him in his tracks with a challenge akin to Moore on Pele, 1970. Superb defending.
43' BUILD UP
Decent build-up from England before Milner wildly over-hits a right-wing cross. England's final ball has been pretty good tonight though, particularly that sublime Gerrard assist for the goal.
41' ALERT
Larsson looks to tee up Elmander in the box but it's too strong and Hart rushes from his line to collect. Alert goalkeeping from Hart, who hasn't had too much to do.
40' KEEPING IT STEADY
Just five minutes until the break and England are keeping it steady. It's crucial they don't concede before half time.
38' KALLSTROM SHOT
Experienced Lyon midfielder Kim Kallstrom lashes a long-range rocket whistling over Joe Hart's bar. It was always rising.
36' SIDE NETTING
Cole sends Young darting into the box down the left, but a poor touch from the winger stops him in his tracks. He then elects not to take the ball on and sidefoots a tame shot into the side netting. Should have done better from there.
34' GREAT CHALLENGE
Superb tackle from John Terry, this. He perfectly times a sliding tackle on Zlatan as Sweden look to get in behind England. Zlatan's having to do it all by himself.
33' ZLATAN SHOT
Good break from Sweden, with Mellberg leading the charge from the back. The counter ends when Zlatan clips a deflected shot at Hart. Nothing much to worry about for England yet.
31' RACKET
Terry and Elm hold nothing back in a 50-50 challenge. It's Elm who's penalised, much to the joy of the England supporters who continue to make a right racket.
30' POSSESSION
Good possession for Sweden, but they don't go anywhere with it. England are keeping their shape and discipline.
27' AS THINGS STAND
So Sweden are now playing for their Euro 2012 lives. As things stand, they're heading out of the competition.
25' CRUCIAL
The first goal is crucial in any match but it's particularly pertinent here. England are far better holding on to a lead than chasing a game. They'll look to take the sting out of this now, although a second goal would be nice.
21' ZLATAN 1-1 TERRY
Zlatan barges Terry off the ball with embarrassing ease near the right corner flag, but with team mates not in support he needs to hold on to the ball, by which time Terry is back on his feet and he intercepts. Another good contest.
20' ZLATAN SHOT
Apart from Zlatan, that is. The Milan forward tries to surprise Hart with an early-taken drilled shot from range, but the keeper gets down to make an easy save.
19' NOT PRETTY
Well we didn't think it would be pretty...and it isn't. England are seeing most of the ball but they're not doing much with it, while Sweden seem happy to take things slowly.
16' COVERED
Important interception from Johnson here. Larsson's deep cross from the right is chested down by Ibrahimovic - if Johnson isn't racing back it's a clear run on goal from 25 yards out, but the delay while Zlatan controls is enough time for the right back to nip in and intercept.
15' WELBECK CHANCE
He may not be the quickest, but James Milner has got a great cross on him. The Man City man swings over a beauty from the right which Welbeck should do far better with, but glances harmlessly wide of the far post.
13' FAN BANTER
"Shall we sing a song for you?" is the cry from the England fans. They're winning the singing battle off the pitch so far. Good on you lads.
12' SITTING DEEP
Sweden started off in a seemingly positive fashion but they're reverted to type now and are sitting very deep, leaving little room for England to play around in their third of the field. This could be a long night.
11' LARSSON SHOT
First shot of the evening for Sweden and it comes from the right boot of Seb Larsson. He arrows a decent long-range effort down Hart's throat.
10' GOOD BATTLE
Good battle between the two brutes of Mellberg and Carroll. There'll be nothing left in reserve between those two. Mellberg fouls the Liverpool striker on halfway, but the free kick comes to nothing.
9' TIDYING UP
Good defending from Cole who carefully watches a deep cross from the left and shepherds a tidy header back to Hart, with Sunderland winger Sebastian Larsson lurking behind him.
6' DECENT MOVE
England slip into gear with a decent move from right to left, but Sweden flood their box to form a big yellow wall and Hodgson's men are forced to retreat before winning a free kick near halfway.
5' PRESSING ISSUES
Good pressing from Sweden in the early stages. They're playing a high midfield and pushing England back.
3' GENTLE START
A gentle start from England, who have yet to get out of their own half. Great atmosphere in the Olympic Stadium - both sets of fans are in the mood.
2' KEEN CARROLL
Carroll, no doubt keen to get involved, has already committed two fouls in a rush to get hold of the ball.
1' KICK OFF
Right, 15 minutes late owing to a spot of rain in Donetsk, the game kicks off. Sweden get the ball rolling.
0' KICK OFF 1945 BST
With England and Sweden being two of the less, shall we say, fashionable teams at the tournament we shouldn't expect a classic free-flowing match. But the drama levels will make up for that – if Sweden lose they're out, while if England lose we could have a sequel to Graham “Turnip” Taylor from 1992.
0' THE REF
Slovenian referee Damir Skomina is the man in the middle. He angered Holland in their Group B opener versus Denmark, denying the Dutch two decent shouts for penalties as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat. Skomina, aged 35, took charge of a Champions League quarter final and a Europa League semi-final last season.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
The stat that will fill England fans with dread is that the Three Lions have faced Sweden seven times in competitive fixtures and not won on a single occasion. The hoodoo also extended to friendlies for a mammoth 43 years until a Gareth Barry winner at Wembley ended the turgid run last November. The smart money would be on a draw tonight, with the two nations cancelling each other out in four of their past six meetings, including at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
The £35million enigma that is Andy Carroll is widely expected to be thrust into the Euro spotlight, partnering Danny Welbeck up front with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain due to make way. Talking of enigmas, Zlatan Ibrahimovic was Sweden's standout player in their disappointing defeat to Ukraine, and he'll be hoping to score in his fifth consecutive international match. Striker Johan Elmander, struggling for fitness after suffering a foot injury at the end of the season, could come in for Markus Rosenberg.
0' PREVIEW
It's not quite last-chance saloon time for England yet, but Roy Hodgson knows anything less than a win against Sweden will leave their Euro 2012 hopes hanging by a yellow Ukraine-based thread. A predictably underwhelming performance – but a decent result – against the French got England's campaign off to a solid start. They must take that one step further tonight though, against a team they've never beaten in a competitive international.
