Italy vs. Croatia
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME - 1-1
Croatia finish the stronger, but a draw is probably the right result. For 45 minutes, Italy were fantastic - incredibly tight defensively and incisive going forward - but despite creating plenty of chances from open play it took a Pirlo pearler to break the deadlock. Roles were reversed after the break, with the Croats carrying the greater threat, especially in midfield, and deservedly levelling through Mario Mandzukic (his third of the tournament). Croatia stay top of Group C on four points with Spain to come in their final match on Monday, while Italy - currently with two points to their name - return to Poznan to face the Trapp's Republic of Ireland.
Niko Kranjcar replaces the tireless Mario Mandzukic - an outside bet for top scorer if Croatia can get out of the group.
Into the first of five added minutes...
Claudio Marchisio and Sebastian Giovinco wade in with a pair of rash challenges, typical of the second half in general.
Seemingly twice the size of Sebastian Giovinco, Gordon Schildenfeld is rightly booked after blocking the run of the little Italian substitute.
Change apiece as Sebastian Giovinco and Eduardo replace Antonio Cassano and Nikica Jelavic respectively.
Mario Mandzukic leads a three-on-three counter, the big striker sliding wide right for Nikica Jelavic before continuing his run, but the Italian back three hold their line and pounce on what turns out to be a tame return pass across the box.
Riccardo Montolivo sees yellow after leading with his arm, challenging for a bouncing ball with Nikica Jelavic.
79' MY BALL!
Ognjen Vukojevic boots a rogue ball down the throat of a jubilant supporter, who's just got himself a surprise souvenir. Question is: does he stick it on eBay?
Stipe Pletikosa's taking no chances as Riccardo Montolivo drives a ferocious dipper towards goal forcing the Croatian stopper to drop to his knees and swat to safety.
As the smoke clears, the linesman correctly raises his flag to deny Nikica Jelavic a run at goal. No complaints from the striker.
This is silly. Again Howard Webb has to stop play as another flare lands on the turf...
71' GOAAAAAL!!!!
Italy switch off for the first time, and Croatia take full advantage. Giorgio Chiellini jumps far too early as Ivan Strinic delivers from the left; MARIO MANDZUKIC still needs a touch, before squeezing an effort off the post and keeper to pull his side level.
A dejected Mario Balotelli is hooked for the second match running, with Antonio Di Natale again his replacement in attack.
Danijel Pranjic does indeed get the nod; Ivan Perisic makes way.
Despite making a lively start to the second half, Croatia look as if they're running out of ideas, with Danijel Pranjic currently warming up to the right of his coach.
Tasty little match-up out on Italy's right as Claudio Marchisio runs at Ivan Strinic. He goes for the chip and run approach, but the Croatian left-back does his job.
Riccardo Montolivo replaces Thiago Motta in the Italian midfield, presumably because of that blow to the back of the head moments ago.
Emanuele Giaccherini skips inside and finds Mario Balotelli, who sends a fierce effort a few yards over from 20 yards. Doesn't look quite as impressive on the replay.
Thiago Motta stays down after clashing mid-air with Darijo Srna. Definitely an elbow in there somewhere.
Howard Webb breaks his duck, the Rotheram-based official dishing out his first booking of the tournament to Italy's Thiago Motta.
It's all a bit Serie A as two flares are launched onto the pitch, seemingly from the Croatian fans. Ivan Strinic goes over to have a word, before play restarts.
Croatia win their second corner after some patient work in the box from Nikica Jelavic. The ball's worked back to Ivan Rakitic, who drifts a good-looking cross just out of Mario Mandzukic's reach at the back post.
Ivan Perisic gets in the way of Leonardo Bonucci's 18-yard rocket, but the ensuing corner fails to find a man.
Croatia appear to have gone up a gear since the restart, with Luka Modric much more involved off the shoulder of the front two. The little Croat has another pop at goal after a nippy break, and smashes over.
Ivan Perisic's decoy run creates space on the edge of the box for Luka Modric, who slides a tame effort towards the bottom corner that's as routine as they come for Gianluigi Buffon.
Nikica Jelavic holds off his marker on the edge of the area, but Mario Mandzukic's return ball is far too heavy.
As you were at the start of the second half.
Two nations that really know how to play football, but only one side in it at the break. Italy have won all the key battles - none more so than in the midfield where Andrea Pirlo has put on a real master class - and look good value for their lead.
Croatia break through Ivan Rakitic, who shifts the play out wide for Mario Mandzukic. The angle's tight as he collects in the Italy area, and Gianluigi Buffon duly gobbles up at his near post.
Croatia cannot afford to keep giving away set pieces like this. Andrea Pirlo can't do a thing wrong right now, and it's his delivery that's flicked just over by Antonio Cassano.
38' GOAAAAAL!!!!
ANDREA PIRLO with a trademark free kick puts Italy in front. Ivan Rakitic is the culprit, conceding a free kick 20 yards out, just left of centre. There's only one man who's going to take it, and what follows is a beauty to behold - up and over the wall and tucked away out of the reach of Stipe Pletikosa. Fantastic technique.
Only some phenomenally good goalkeeping keeps Italy at bay. Claudio Marchisio finds himself on the penalty spot, the Italian winger flicking Pirlo's incisive pass around his marker and drawing the best out of Stipe Pletikosa. The keeper's prone as the ball drops back at the feet of Marchisio, but still manages to snuff out the threat.
Three shots on goal in quick succession for the Italians - all after flowing moves constructed in midfield. Claudio Marchisio fires straight at Stipe Pletikosa, before yet another Andrea Pirlo cross finds its man. Antonio Cassano's on the end of this one, but drags wide. It doesn't take long for Italy to come back at the Croats, with Mario Balotelli sending a hurried effort past the post from 18 yards.
Howard Webb resists the temptation to book Ivan Strinic as Croatia's left-back hauls down Mario Balotelli on halfway. 120 minutes of Euro 2012 action, and still no bookings from the English referee.
Antonio Cassano's mazy run in from the right exposes Gordon Schildenfeld's lack of pace. He tries to slide back for the waiting Balotelli, but it's cut out and hacked away.
Darijo Srna finds the Italian wall after winning a free kick for a foul against Giorgio Chiellini. He gets another chance from the corner, but Ivan Perisic can only head into the arms of Gianluigi Buffon. Soft.
Italy's roaming wing-back Christian Maggio isn't far away from bringing Andrea Pirlo's high ball under wraps, deep in the Croatia half. That's some run from the no.2 - don't see enough of that these days.
Gordon Schildenfeld does his job as Thiago Motta tries to loft a ball in behind the Croatia back four for the run of Balotelli. Held his line nicely there.
Nikica Jelavic is there again, but just can't get enough on Darijo Srna's low ball into the six-yard box.
Howard Webb looks towards the linesman as Giorgio Chiellini appears to drag Nikica Jelavic to the deck. It looks a penalty from here, but the decision goes in Italy's favour.
Significant improvement to Mario Balotelli's work rate. Rather than wait for the ball to come to him, he's actually making himself available and chasing hard off the ball.
Antonio Cassano again drops deep, before picking out Mario Balotelli on the edge of the area, but with time and space he can only drive straight at Stipe Pletikosa. Croatia need to get to grips with Italy's wide men, and fast.
Andrea Pirlo's pulling the strings once more, the Juve man squeezing a trademark pass between two Croatian defenders towards Mario Balotelli. His first touch, though, is dire.
Lovely play on the counter from the Italians. Antonio Cassano threads a great ball to the feet of Mario Balotelli, who hesitates and sees his shot charged down. Claudio Marchisio races onto the loose ball and absolutely hammers one narrowly past the angle of post and bar. Rocket.
Nikica Jelavic gets the better of Giorgio Chiellini, who crudely sticks out a leg as the Croat threatened to hone in on goal.
Ivan Perisic gets a boot to Antonio Cassano's raking left-wing cross, and is rather grateful to see the ball clear his own crossbar. Andrea Pirlo's ensuing corner comes to nothing.
Italy have started very brightly, and don't take too kindly to Howard Webb's intervention when Mario Mandzukic sends Giorgio Chiellini tumbling. What happened to advantage?
That's much more like it from Mario Balotelli, the Italian striker collecting Emanuele Giaccherini's teasing cross, rolling his man and slamming just wide from 12 yards. Lovely build-up play, too.
Andrea Pirlo's first involvement is to play a wonderful first-time pass up to Antonio Cassano .So gifted, and still one of the best even at 32.
The game's under way in Poznan.
The Song of the Italians vs. Our Beautiful Homeland – also known as the battle of the Adriatic. Let's just hope the two teams play football better than they sing.
No changes from either gaffer - usually a good sign. It will, though, be interesting to see what sort of performance Italy coach Cesare Prandelli gets out of Mario Balotelli after the forward's lacklustre display against Spain.
Croatia could book their place in the last eight with a win in Poznan, but face an Italian side looking to arrest a four-match winless run. Join us around 1635BST for confirmed team news followed by live text commentary from the Municipal Stadium.
English referee Howard Webb will take charge of his second game of the finals. The 40-year-old expertly navigated his first outing involving Russia and the Czech Republic without once having to reach into his pocket.
If we're going to talk about game-changers, then we needn't look further than Italy's Andrea Pirlo and Croatia's Luka Modric. Off the back of a superb season with Juventus, Pirlo played some fantastic balls about the pitch against Spain - none more so than when he slid a beautiful pass to Antonio Di Natale for the opening goal. Boasting a pass completion rate of 90 per cent, Modric was equally as impressive as his side cruised past the Irish, but it's the midfielder's work rate that probably tips the scales in Croatia's favour.
No need for any changes in the Croatian camp after their victorious efforts against the Irish. Italy's back five and midfield three are also likely to remain as they were, but striker Antonio Di Natale could start in place of Mario Balotelli or Antonio Cassano, having opened the scoring on Sunday afternoon as a substitute.
It was hard to know what to expect from Italy – at one point their mere participation at the finals was in doubt – but, just as they did en route to lifting the 2006 World Cup, the Azzurri put on the sort of curtain-raising display that suggests they may well hang around until the back end of the tournament. Playing with a sweeper in Daniele de Rossi, the Italians frustrated holders Spain as Group C's heavyweights were forced to settle for a point that few would have expected from the Italians amidst all the off-field scandal back home. Croatia, though, are unlikely to have as much trouble in front of goal as the Spaniards; their front two of Mario Mandzukic and Nikica Jelavic were incredibly dynamic and effective as Slaven Bilic's side lived up to their ‘dark horses' tag with a comfortable 3-1 win over the Republic of Ireland. It'll take a brave man to call this group, that's for sure.
