Two goals from Mario Gomez help Germany to an impressive win over Holland in Kharkiv which gives Joachim Loew's side maximum points from their opening two games in Group B and leaves the Dutch on the brink of elimination. We had hoped for a classic between two of the game's superpowers. What we got was the team ranked third in the world giving the side ranked one place below them a footballing lesson for the first half of the match, opening up a healthy lead and denying us the pulsating end-to-end encounter which we craved. It could have been so different had Robin van Persie done better than shoot anaemically at Manuel Neuer in the early going. Mesut Ozil hit the post for Germany before the opener came midway through the first half. A delightful move saw Thomas Muller pick out Bastian Schweinsteiger and he produced the incisive pass that allowed Gomez to show his finishing prowess. An even better strike from the Bayern Munich frontman seven minutes before the interval doubled Germany's advantage and again Schweinsteiger was the supplier. Holland could have imploded, but to their credit they came back strongly in the second half. Neuer made a top-class save to deny Van Persie, but could do nothing about a sumptuous 20-yard strike from the Arsenal forward with 17 minutes remaining. Bert van Marwijk's men kept plugging away and caused the Germany defence a few nervous moments, but the ball did not fall their way.

Germany lead convincingly at the break and are halfway towards collecting a second win of the tournament. It was an even opening to the match, with Robin van Persie shooting straight at Manuel Neuer for Holland and Mesut Ozil striking a post at the other end. But two goals in 14 minutes from Mario Gomez have given Germany control against a Holland side that look like they have had enough and want to go home. Both strikes were finished superbly by the right foot of the Bayern frontman and both featured assists from his club team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger. When you think that Holger Badstuber headed straight at Martin Stekelenberg from six yards out Germany could already be out of sight. Bert van Marwijk needs to earn his money at the interval.

It's another quality strike. Germany played the ball down the right, it came inside to Schweinsteiger and he slipped in the Bayern striker down the inside-right channel. Stekelenberg went down too early, but take nothing away from the finish, clipped into the far corner. Pure class.

It should be 2-0 to Germany. The Dutch defending is appalling at a right-wing free-kick and the defender is presented with a free header six yards out. The Bayern man heads straight at Stekelenburg.

There has not been the expected riposte from the Dutch to going a goal down. We were hoping for a classic, but this match has yet to hit the heights and neither side are at the top of their game at present.

Tonight's referee Jonas Eriksson made six million pounds when he sold the stake he had in a company back home. It must have been tempting to toss up with a gold coin for choice of ends before kick-off, but the Swede resisted the temptation.

It's not easy being an official, we all know that. But a couple of times already the flag has gone up for offside and the attacker has been clearly played onside by the last defender.

Mario Gomez was within 15 seconds of being substituted against Portugal on Saturday and thereby likely to lose his place to Miroslav Klose for the remainder of the tournament. Then the ball drops kindly and he nets the winner to become a national hero. And now he goes and does it again. On such small margins are reputations made or destroyed.

Holland take on Germany in Kharkiv on Wednesday night knowing that a second defeat would almost certainly end their interest at Euro 2012. The Dutch were superior to a well-drilled Denmark in their opening Group B game, but profligate finishing saw them succumb in the tournament's major shock result so far. This has always been one of the biggest games in international football, ever since that supremely-talented Netherlands team built around Johan Cruyff were denied by West Germany in the 1974 World Cup final. "It's the game,” Holland midfielder Wesley Sneijder said. “The biggest Holland can play. I grew up watching these games on television and they're always something different. I've dreamt of playing and scoring the winner against the Germans.” These two sides were the top scorers in qualifying and the hope is that unlike the stale, predictable encounter between France and England, the fear factor will be consigned to the same rubbish bin where all those paper missiles the Germany fans tossed at Cristiano Ronaldo ended up. Already this tournament has proved so much more entertaining than the World Cup in South Africa two years ago. If they play to their potential, and we get an early goal, there is a chance we could be talking about this match not just for the rest of Euro 2012, but for years to come. 0' PLAYERS TO WATCH
Bastian Schweinsteiger was one of Germany's outstanding players in their opening win over Portugal and his fantastic work-rate dispelled any fears that he might still be suffering with the calf injury sustained against Chelsea in the Champions League final. Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira also did themselves justice in a mightily talented midfield. Conversely, Robin van Persie may have netted 30 goals for Arsenal in the Premier League season not long finished, but against Denmark he couldn't hit the back end of a milk-producing bovine with a circular-framed multi-stringed musical instrument. This was not the van Persie we know, he snatched at perfectly good chances he would have buried in his sleep at the Emirates. RVP will be determined to put the record straight and add to his 28 international goals.
0' TOURNAMENT RECORD
Germany are making their 11th consecutive appearance at the European Championships and have won the tournament three times: 1972 in Belgium, 1980 in Italy and 1996 in England. Holland enjoyed their lone success at Euro 1988 when they beat Russia 2-0 in the final in a match remembered for Marco van Basten's stunning volleyed goal. The Oranje have been ever-present in the final tournament ever since, reaching the semi-finals in 1992, 2000 and 2004.

After seeing his side fire blanks against Denmark, Holland coach Bert van Marwijk could opt to shake up his forward line by bringing in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in place of either Robin van Persie or Ibrahim Affelay. Joris Mathijsen has recovered from a hamstring problem and is being tipped for a return at the expense of Ron Vlaar. Germany suffered no injuries in their opening match and it would be no surprise if Joachim Loew named an unchanged side.

Germany had won just twice in their five friendly matches since ending their qualifying campaign, losing to both France and Switzerland, but once again, when the finals of a major tournament came around they produced the goods. Taking charge of tonight's game is Jonas Eriksson. The 38-year-old Swede has been a FIFA international referee since 2002. He is perhaps best remembered by English fans for sending off Liverpool's Ryan Babel during their Europa League clash against Benfica in 2010, a match in which he also awarded two controversial penalties to the home side. Eriksson's not short of a few bob, either, apparently. When the three partners sold the TV company (IEC) in which he had a 15 per cent share, Eriksson became a multi-millionaire overnight.
