Ukraine vs. Sweden
Minute Commentary
90' SUMMARY
And they were forced to do it the hard way too, coming from behind after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had given Sweden a precious lead at the start of the second half. Ukraine looked down and out for all of three minutes until the old-timer, the veteran, the supposed has-been, Andriy Shevchenko, burst into life and scored two superbly-crafted goals. Sheva got a yard on his man on both occasions and sent the Kiev fans into raptures - he's the one they adore and for all his career highs, Shevchenko may have just enjoyed the best night of his career. Ukraine were good value for the win too, with the predictable Swedes lacking creativty and indeed urgency from midfield. Zlatan aside they were poor, but still should have earned a point when Elmander blazed over in the last minute. Ukraine will find it tougher against France and England, but with home advantage and Shevchenko in this form, they cannot be written off. Full time on a famous night in Kiev, Ukraine 2 Sweden 1.
90' FULL TIME
It's celebration time in Kiev - Ukraine hold on for a famous win.
90' MELLBERG CHANCE
Heart-in-mouth time for the hosts as Olof Mellberg, of all people, clips a left-footed volley onto the top of the net from a deep right-wing cross. It hung in the air for what seemed like an eternity, but just wouldn't drop under the bar in time. That's surely that now...
90' UKRAINE SUB
Oleg Blokhin eats up a few seconds by replacing Yevhen Konoplyanka with Marko Devic.
90' ADDED TIME
We're into the first of three added minutes. How Sweden will rue that Elmander miss if Ukraine see this out.
90' ELMANDER CHANCE
Huge, massive, almighty chance for Johan Elmander. It's wonderfully worked by Elmander and Ibrahimovic who embark on a Brolin, Dahlin, Brolin, Dahlin-style move into the penalty area. Suddenly Elmander is through and one-on-one, but he blazes his half volley comfortably over the bar from 15 yards. That's an awful finish at a crucial moment.
88' HOLDING FIRM
Sweden are chucking it forward but Ukraine are holding firm for now.
86' PANIC
Moment of panic as centre half Yevhen Khacheridi slides and misses a left-wing Sweden cross. Unfortunately for Sweden there's only Mellberg in the box and he's not quick enough to take advantage.
85' STEADY NOW
So as Ukraine slow things down with a couple of changes, we're coming up to the moment of truth. Just five minutes are left on the clock and Ukraine must hold their nerve in this fervent and expectant Kiev atmosphere.
84' UKRAINE SUB
Andriy Voronin off, Ruslan Rotan on.
83' GOOD EFFORT
Serhiy Nazarenko whips the resulting 30-yard free kick not too far wide of Isaksson's left-hand post.
82' BOOKING
Elm picks up a booking for hauling back Voronin, who has actually played pretty well tonight.
81' UKRAINE SUB
What a roar this is. Andriy Shevchenko is lauded like a a Roman Emperor as he departs the field to be replaced by Artem Milevskiy. He is a true national hero. In the short term, he may have won his country three precious points.
80' PUSHING HARD
Good spell for Sweden here - they're pushing really hard for an equaliser in a game which they dare not lose. The lively Christian Wilhelmsson goes on a bustling run before striking low at Pyatov.
77' IBRAHIMOVIC SHOT
Ibrahimovic, Sweden's most dangerous attacking threat by a country mile, puts his laces through a 20-yard scorcher which simply bounces off Pyatov.
74' STICK OR TWIST?
Will Ukraine continue to attack as the 90-minute mark edges nearer? They don't want to sit back and invite pressure from the Swedes, particularly with Ibrahimovic and Elmander lurking in the box, but Pyatov and his two centre halves haven't looked convincing, so perhaps attack is the best form of defence.
71' SWEDEN SUB
Former Bolton striker Johan Elmander, who broke his foot just a few weeks ago, is thrown on to replace Markus Rosenberg. Last throw of the dice from Erik Hamren, who has made three pro-active substitutions in eight minutes.
70' LOOPING VOLLEY
Better sight of goal for Elm this time but he can't quite get enough on a deep Ibrahimovic cross, looping a volley into Andriy Pyatov's arms.
68' ELM SHOT
Elm lets fly from range but he's not pulling up any trees with that. Pyatov watches it wide.
67' SWEDEN SUB
Christian Wilhelmsson is on for the disappointing Seb Larsson. Sweden's plan should be pretty simple really - give it to Zlatan.
65' LOSING IT
Kallstrom, who was booked in the first half, is late on Anatoliy Tymoshchuk, but avoids a booking from the Turkish ref. Sweden are losing it big style in the Ukrainian heat.
63' SWEDEN SUB
Sweden boss Erik Hamren reacts by replacing Ola Toivonen with Anders Svensson.
62' UKRAINE 2-1 SWEDEN
Has someone rewound everything to 2003? ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO is on top of the world again and Ukraine are in dreamland. It's devastatingly simple - Konoplyanka whips a left-wing corner to the near post where Sheva yet again steals a march on his man and nods past a flailing Isaksson. Incredible.
61' PRESSURE
More pressure from the hosts. Voronin tries to work some space in the box for a shot, but with him having the turning circle of the QE2 it doesn't trouble Sweden too much to get a block in. Corner.
59' GUSEV SHOT
The momentum is back with Ukraine. Gusev swings a shot past the post.
56' UNEXPECTED
I don't think anyone saw that coming. Ukraine looked deflated after the Sweden opener and Shevchenko in particular had looked off the pace since picking up a knock in the first half. Any Ukrainian watching in Kiev tonight will never forget that moment. Very special indeed.
55' UKRAINE 1-1 SWEDEN
Well they didn't subdue them for long - local hero ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO has levelled things up in his home stadium. Yarmolenko, fairly quiet so far this evening, tees Shevchenko up perfectly with a clipped left-footed cross from the right and the Dynamo striker steals a march on his marker before powering a header past Isaksson. Pure joy in Sheva's eyes as he celebrates wildly. One of the tournament's great moments, right there.
54' KEEP-BALL
Keep-ball time for Sweden. They certainly have the patience and organisation to close out this game now, if they can subdue the hosts.
53' FAIR ENOUGH
With that Selin injury, Ukraine were playing on at first and then Sweden won possession before playing the ball practically through the stricken left-back as he lay face down. The referee could have stopped it, but didn't, so that's fair enough from the Swedes I reckon.
52' UKRAINE 0-1 SWEDEN
Sweden have played with renewed purpose in this half and they've been rewarded with the opening goal. Ukraine aren't happy because Selin is down injured and Sweden play on - a deep Larsson cross isn't cleared and Kallstrom plays back inside for ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC to tap home from six yards.
50' SHEVA DOWN
The cumbersome Shevchenko requires treatment after a challenge from Andreas Granqvist. He hasn't moved freely all evening and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him hooked soon.
48' ROSENBERG CHANCE
Larsson takes the ball off Nazarenko in Ukraine's half and suddenly Sweden are on the attack. The ball is worked to the right of the area where Rosenberg lets fly, but Selin gets in a superb last-ditch block.
46' DINKED CROSS
Ukraine come flying out of the blocks and a dinked Shevchenko cross very nearly reaches Yarmolenko. The first goal is so vital here. Will Sweden begin to open up more in a bid to get it? They were certainly more reserved than Ukraine in the first half, even if they did forge the best chance.
46' SECOND HALF
We're back playing in Kiev. Both sides are unchanged.
45' HALF TIME
An intriguing game of football. Ukraine just about edged it but Sweden came closest to breaking the deadlock when Ibrahimovic nodded against the post. With both defences looking suspect, goals look likely after the break.
42' SKIED
Yevhen Konoplyanka really should do better with this. A cross hangs nicely in the air at the back stick but the Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk man wallops his volley into row Z.
41' OPENING UP
Crucial moments coming up here. The game is really opening up and a goal now would be very important indeed.
38' OFF THE POST
France will have a field day against this Ukraine defence. Seconds after a woefully short back pass has to be hurridly cleared by Pyatov, Ibrahimovic flicks an unmarked header off the post from an Elm cross. Should have scored, no question. The keeper didn't move either.
37' BLOCKED
Another good Ukraine moment as they flood the Sweden box, before Yarmolenko sees a close range effort blocked. Solid defending from the Swedes.
37' SWERVING SHOT
After Ibrahimovic goes on a slalom run with no end product at one end, highly-rated Yevhen Konoplyanka, aged just 22, sends a swerving shot past the post at the other.
35' VORONIN SHOT
Andriy Voronin, scorer of just eight international goals from 73 appearances (Liverpool fans won't be surprised to read that) tests Isaksson with a swerving 30-yard effort which the keeper has to watch all the way. Very decent attempt.
31' ROSENBERG SHOT
Half chance for Werder Bremen striker Markus Rosenberg who gets away a 15-yard shot on the turn, but Pyatov eventually smothers the ball at the second attempt. Not enough conviction from Rosenberg.
29' POOR DELIVERY
The noise levels inside the Olympic Stadium reach something approaching a crescendo as the hosts prepare to take a free kick from the left flank, but Serhiy Nazarenko's delivery is desperately poor and Isaksson claims.
27' WELL MATCHED
Not much to choose between these two sides so far. Ukraine are moving the ball stylishly when they get the chance, but the Swedes have more tournament experience in their armoury. It's got a draw written all over it.
25' PLAYING ON
Shevchenko has just dropped to the floor with the ball no where in sight. Looks ominous for a moment, like he's pulled a hamstring, but a grimacing Shevchenko is soon back on his feet. Perhaps his dignity needed treatment after that spurned chance a moment ago.
23' SHEVCHENKO CHANCE
Oh Andriy! It's Shevchenko's big moment, history looks set to be made, but he brings his Chelsea form to the table rather than his golden days of Milan. The striker plays a great one-two and has space on the right of the area, ten yards out, but drags his shot wide of the far post. Not the most convincing of efforts.
21' LAST MAN
Shevchenko is playing on the last man and looking to get on the end of a through ball or two over the top. Despite his age he'd have no trouble outpacing Mellberg, so may not be a bad tactic.
18' IMMOBILE
Meanwhile Ukraine are playing within themselves in the early stages. Andriy Yarmolenko is the danger-man, looking to cause havoc from deep, but with the ageing Shevchenko and Yarmolenko so immobile up front there's little movement to help him.
17' EFFICIENT
Sweden, as you'd expect, look efficient and organised but are lacking genuine quality and creativity. Ibrahimovic is supposed to help on that front, but can he do it by himself? He's certainly got the talent to, as I'm sure he'd tell you.
16' FIRST SCARE
First proper goalmouth action and it's a big scare for Ukraine. Ibrahimovic uses his strength and awareness to create space on the left before dinking in a teasing cross. Pyatov elects to punch clear and, with his defenders scattered, is lucky the ball doesn't fall to a Sweden attacker.
13' EVEN
Neither side has really taken charge so far. It's being played at a fairly gentle pace, with too many mistakes being made when in possession.
11' BOOKING
Ukraine race clear from a collected Larsson free kick, before number nine Kallstrom wipes out his flying opposite number Gusev with a late sliding challenge. That's a deserved booking.
8' POSSESSION
Good possession for the hosts, which will help to settle any nerves. The crowd are getting behind them too - great atmosphere in Kiev.
6' KALLSTROM SHOT
Experienced Lyon midfielder Kim Kallstrom lets fly from range now, driving a firmly-struck effort over Pyatov's bar.
5' SIGHTER
Yevhen Konoplyanka gets away the game's first shot, dragging a low 25-yarder well wide of Isaksson's right-hand post.
4' HEAT
In the searing Kiev heat this may be a bit of a slow burner, as England v France was earlier today. Well actually that didn't really burn at all.
3' BETTER START
But Sweden will happily spoil the party and they've made the better start. Elm and Kallstrom are looking to pull the strings in midfield.
2' HUGE NIGHT
What a huge night this is for the whole country of Ukraine. The nation only formed when it split from the old Soviet Union to gain independence in 1991, so it's a very proud day for its some 45 million citizens. Let's hope it's doesn't fall flat, for their sakes.
1' KICK OFF
Sweden, clad in a 70s-style dark blue kit complete with beauty pageant yellow sash, get the ball rolling in the Olympic Stadium.
0' TEAMS OUT
The two teams enter the field to a wall of sound in Kiev. The anthems follow and Ukraine's - a dark, broody, stately number - is heartily belted out by the many thousands of fans inside the stadium. Nerves aplenty in the Ukraine XI by the looks of those faces.
0' LINE-UPS
Artem Milevskiy misses out for Ukraine as former Liverpool striker Andriy Voronin gets the nod up front. Nine of Blokhin's XI ply their trade in the Ukrainian league. Familiar faces in the Sweden line-up include Olof Mellberg, still going strong at the age of 34 and set to win his 115th cap tonight, as well as Sunderland winger Seb Larsson. Full line-ups: UKRAINE: Pyatov, Selin, Khacheridi, Mikhalik, Tymoshchuk, Gusev, Yarmolenko, Nazarenko, Konoplyanka, Shevchenko. SWEDEN: Isaksson, Lustig, Mellberg, Granqvist, M. Olsson, Elm, Larsson, Kallstrom, Ibrahimovic, Toivonen, Rosenberg.
0' THE REF
Turkey didn't qualify for the tournament so they have to make do with representation from referee Cuneyt Cakir. The 35-year-old is well thought by at Uefa, who gave him the Champions League semi-final second leg between Barcelona and Chelsea two montsh ago. This is Cakir's first major championships.
0' ROUTE TO THE EUROS
As co-hosts Ukraine of course automatically qualified for the tournament. That means their last competitive international way nearly three years ago, when they were marginally beaten 1-0 in a World Cup 2010 qualifying play-off against Greece. Sweden were drawn in a fairly comfortable qualifying group and finished runners-up to Holland, but well clear of Hungary and Finland, ending up going straight through as the highest-scoring runners-up.
0' EARLY TEAM NEWS
The Ukraine squad suffered a huge scare last week when almost half of Blokhin's 23 went down with food poisoning, although fortunately for the co-hosts it seems to have cleared up now. Artem Milevskiy and veteran Andriy Shevchenko are the star Ukraine names. As for Sweden, their XI has already been announced. The mercurial Zlatan Ibrahimovic leads the line, but vice-captain Anders Svensson isn't included.
0' PREVIEW
The final two teams to get their Euro 2012 campaigns underway – Ukraine and Sweden – meet in Kiev for what is a crucial Group D fixture. Co-hosts Ukraine are playing in their first European Championships and coach Oleg Blokhin knows that avoiding defeat is imperative with tougher tests (on paper) to come against England and France.
