Russia vs. Czech Republic
Minute Commentary
90' FULL TIME
So when can we start talking about Russia not as dark horses but as genuine contenders? They laboured a little at 2-1, the Czech Republic's Vaclav Pilar having reduced the arrears after first-half goals from Alan Dzagoev and Roman Shirokov put the Russians into a seemingly unassailable lead, but all-in-all the football was fantastic. Indeed, but for Kerzhakov's profligacy we could be looking at a cricket score, such was Russia's dominance. The question is: can they sustain such a high level of attack-minded football against the likes of Germany and Spain? As for the Czechs, they did enough to suggest the battle for second place could go right to the wire.
90' RULED OUT
The Czechs have the ball in the net, but it's offside and that's the last of it.
89' TIME ADDED ON
Three to go here, where Russia are waltzing across the finish line.
86' TOUCH AND BANG
Russia are enjoying themselves now, as Aleksandr Kokorin floors Michal Kadlec with a cute flick and warms the palms of Petr Cech.
84' SUBSTITUTION
Two-goal hero Alan Dzagoev makes way to rousing Russian applause, with Aleksandr Kokorin given a run-out.
83' ROUTINE STOP
Tomas Rosicky tries his luck, but it's easy for Vyacheslav Malafeev. Been very quiet, the Arsenal man.
81' GOAAAAL!!!!
Emphatic. ROMAN PAVLYUCHENKO refuses to relinquish possession in the face of four Czech shirts. He only has one thing on his mind as he works the angle in from the left, before absolutely leathering past Cech from 15 yards.
77' GOAAAAAL!!!!
That has to be that. After missing a hatful of chances, Russia regain their two-goal lead. Roman Pavlyuchenko plays a cracking ball in front of ALAN DZAGOEV, who gives Kerzhakov a real lesson in finishing with a fantastic first touch and hit. No chance for Cech.
75' SUBSTITUTION
Like for like as Milan Petrzela replaces Petr Jiracek for the trailing Czechs.
74' BUTTER FINGERS
Vyacheslav Malafeev spills an effort from Tomas Rosicky, before pulling the loose ball into his chest at the second time of asking with Milan Baros breathing down his neck.
72' SUBSTITUTION
Roman Pavlyuchenko replaces serial bottler Aleksandr Kerzhakov.
71' VAN BASTEN-ESQUE
Jeez! From a thoroughly tight angle - a la Van Basten in '88 - Theodor Gebre Selassie hits a dipping volley that whistles oh-so narrowly wide of the near post. Wow! Great tekkers.
70' DEJA VU
This is getting ridiculous. Aleksandr Kerzhakov sells Michal Kadlec a clever dummy in the Czech area, before scooping wide on his left foot, but you knew that didn't you? If Russia don't win this...
70' CZECH SANDWICH
Alan Dzagoev plays a hugely ambitious ball from right to left, intended for the run of Arshavin, who's crowded out.
67' WILD
Ugh, that's horrible. With the Czechs committing men forward in numbers, Russia once more have men over on the counter. Spearheading the attack is that man Aleksandr Kerzhakov, and again he can't find the target from the edge of the area.
64' WHAT A WASTE
How many chances does this guy need?! Surrounded by white shirts, Arshavin flicks through for Aleksandr Kerzhakov who, for the umpteenth time, misfires with just the keeper to beat. He just didn't catch it right. Again!
62' SIGHTER
Konstantin Zyryanov has space to size up his options - of which he has plenty - but instead opts to crack one up and over the bar from a good 20 yards.
60' SLOPPY
Not exactly Russia's best spell. They're making some silly errors on the ball and are being made to look decidedly average.
58' LULL
It's gone a little quiet around the Municipal, but - let's face it - it has been hell-for-leather for nearly an hour.
55' OFF TARGET
Russia break again through Andrei Arshavin, but Roman Shirokov wastes a presentable opportunity with yet another rushed effort that sails away from Cech's goal.
54' GAME CHANGER?
And now the Czechs look interested - they're finally shifting the ball with purpose.
51' GOAAAAL!!!!
Well, well. Out of nothing, the Czechs are back in it. It's some ball from Jaroslav Plasil - through the eye of a needle in fact - to find the run of VACLAV PILAR, who rounds Vyacheslav Malafeev and steers into the empty net. Game on.
50' WAYWARD STRIKE
Same drill as Andrei Arshavin scampers away, before supplying an unmarked team-mate. This time it's Aleksandr Kerzhakov on the edge of the area, but he slams over.
49' LAST HURDLE
Andrei Arshavin is on to Igor Denisov's long punt in a flash down the Russia left. He rolls in Alan Dzagoev, who stumbles in front of a grateful Petr Cech.
47' TALKING TACTICS
Although logical, that half-time change suggests an exercise in damage limitation. In any case, Russia have started where they left off at the break.
46' SECOND HALF
Up and running again in Wroclaw, where central midfielder Tomas Hubschman has replaced striker Jan Rezek for the Czechs.
45' HALF TIME
The Russians lead 2-0 at the break thanks to goals from Alan Dzagoev and Roman Shirokov. Much like they did four years back, Arshavin and co have dazzled with their eye-catching brand of attacking football, and could so easily be out of sight by now. The Czechs started well, but wilted once they went behind and now face a monumental task just to keep the score to a minimum.
45' JIRACEK DRIVE
Petr Jiracek controls well, but can only drive a rushed effort out for a goal kick. Strong end to the half from the Czechs, this.
44' DOWNWARD HEADER
At just 5ft 6, little Vaclav Pilar gets up above Aleksandr Anyukov to direct Jaroslav Plasil's deep cross into the arms of Vyacheslav Malafeev. That's what Big Ron must have meant by 'magic stepladders'.
42' CZECH SPELL
Much better from the boys in white, though it's predominantly in their own half and predictable.
39' STRONG IN THE TACKLE
Sergei Ignashevich's robust challenge puts a halt to a driving run from Petr Jiracek. Really can't fault this Russia side.
36' CHASING SHADOWS
This has got to be pretty disheartening for Michal Bilek's side, who played some positive stuff down the flanks early on. Since going behind, they just haven't been able to keep hold of possession for any meaningful amount of time.
33' REALLY SHOULD BE THREE
Oh dear... Andrei Arshavin - who else - breaks free of Theodor Gebre Selassie, and cuts back for Aleksandr Kerzhakov. A deflection sees it sit up perfectly for the Russian forward, whose face says it all as the ball balloons over the bar from barely 12 yards.
31' GOBBLED UP
Vaclav Pilar dinks a clever ball into the area for Milan Baros, but it's just got too much on it for the ex-Liverpool forward, and falls kindly into the arms of Vyacheslav Malafeev.
28' ALMOST THREE
Andrei Arshavin's at it again, this time working some magic on the right-hand side of the box. The eventual cross - hard and low across goal - has everyone beaten including team-mate Aleksandr Kerzhakov, who would have had a tap-in, had he got on the end of it.
25' RESPONSE
The Czechs respond through Michal Kadlec, who drives a decent effort straight at Vyacheslav Malafeev. He is a defender, remember.
23' GOAAAAL!!!!
Dark horses? You bet! Jaroslav Plasil loses possession in midfield, allowing Andrei Arshavin to take the bull by the horns and slide a wonderfully-inventive ball into the box for the run of ROMAN SHIROKOV. He has plenty to do, but takes advantage of Petr Cech's uncertainty with a lovely flicked finish over the unusually slow stopper.
22' REZEK HEADER
Jan Rezek does really well to get something on Jaroslav Plasil's well-directed corner, but can't find the target.
21' TAILS UP
Pressing their opponents all over the pitch, Russia have the bit between their teeth after a shaky opening ten minutes. This Czech back four just don't know how to handle Andrei Arshavin.
18' SHOULD BE TWO
Alan Dzagoev is in acres of space as Russia break through Andrei Arshavin. He simply has to guide the ball back across the advancing Petr Cech, but can only skew wide of the near post.
15' GOAAAAL!!!!
Russia have the lead in Wroclaw. Konstantin Zyryanov collects a rather poor-looking pass from Andrei Arshavin, before whipping a much better effort onto the head of Aleksandr Kerzhakov from the right-hand side. The far post appears to spare Petr Cech, only for ALAN DZAGOEV to sweep home the follow-up.
13' SMART MOVE
This is much more like it from Dick Advocaat's side. No surprise to see Andrei Arshavin at the heart of the move, the little forward cutting a ball back from the byline for Yuri Zhirkov. He finds Aleksandr Kerzhakov, who slides narrowly wide.
11' OVER AND OUT
After working a bit of space, Tomas Rosicky sends a hopeful effort high into the stand behind Vyacheslav Malafeev's goal. Poor strike.
10' DAINTY TRIO
As a long ball sails out for a Czech goal kick, it's pretty striking to see just how little height there is in this Russia side - going forward, that is. Can't imagine they'll want to launch too many balls into the box without Roman Pavlyuchenko and Pavel Pogrebnyak on the pitch.
9' DANGER MAN
Petr Jiracek gets the better of Yuri Zhirkov, but his cross lacks the height needed to pick out a man in the middle. The Czechs are edging this.
7' DECENT SIGNS
A positive start from both sides then. They've got a lot to live up to, though, given what went down in the group's other contest.
5' SET-PIECE THREAT
Jan Koller may be a thing of the past, but the Czechs still pose a threat from set pieces. Case in point as Roman Hubnik glances over from Jaroslav Plasil.
3' UNCERTAINTY
Jan Rezek's low ball spins behind for the game's first corner that triggers some serious panic when whipped in by Tomas Rosicky. Russia see it out for another, which comes to nothing.
2' LIVELY
The red shirts of Russia have started brightly, moving the ball swiftly along the deck largely in the Czech half.
0' AWAY WE GO
The ball's rolling in Wroclaw. If you're wondering why Russia no.1 Igor Akinfeev's on the bench, he's only just returned from injury.
0' SING-SONG
Russia's players belt out a slightly militant number, apparently celebrating the good old days; while the Czechs ask ‘Where's my home?' to the sound of an uplifting orchestral piece. In answer to their question, it's around 130km south of here.
0' HERE THEY COME
Howard Webb leads out the two sets of players to rapturous support. Cue the anthems...
0' THE GROUP
Poland's curtain-raising draw with the Greeks has blown this group wide open, with Russia and Czech Republic now chasing the three points that'd send them top of the table. Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo had his moments in what was a rather topsy-turvy encounter. So let's hope Howard Webb lays down a sensible marker early on here in Wroclaw.
0' CZECH TEAM NEWS
Recent results may have been poor, but it's still a decent-looking Czech XI including the likes of goalkeeper Petr Cech, defender Michal Kadlec, right-sided midfielder Jaroslav Plasil and Arsenal man Tomas Rosicky. Milan Baros also starts, having shaken off a muscle complaint.
0' RUSSIA TEAM NEWS
Roman Pavlyuchenko misses out, but right-back Aleksandr Anyukov gets the go-ahead to start. Yuri Zhirkov is at left-back, while Andrei Arshavin is handed a roaming role in front of midfield masterminds Aleksandr Kerzhakov and Alan Dzagoev.
0' STAY TUNED
Well, the wait's over and if Poland's curtain-raising clash with Euro 2004 champions Greece isn't going to be enough for you then you're in the right place. Join us around 1920BST for confirmed team news followed by live text commentary from Wroclaw's wonderful 42,771-seater Municipal Stadium.
0' THE REF
Making his second appearance at the tournament, English referee Howard Webb takes charge of this one. The 40-year-old infamously took charge of the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and Holland where he dished out 13 yellow cards and one red.
0' FAMILIAR FACES
The Russians are expected to be at full-strength in Wroclaw. So that means goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev, right-back Aleksandr Anyukov, winger Yuri Zhirkov, forward Andrei Arshavin and striker Roman Pavlyuchenko are all likely to be involved. Familiar faces in the Czech camp include Chelsea stopper Petr Cech, Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky and former Liverpool striker Milan Baros – though the latter faces a late fitness test on a muscle strain.
0' FORMER WINNERS
Both sides have been fortunate enough to have lifted the trophy, albeit under former guises back when the competition boasted just four teams. The Soviets were champions in 1960, and runners-up in ‘64,'72 and '88, while Czechoslovakia lifted the trophy in '76. Divorced from Slovakia, the Czechs came agonisingly close in 1996 – losing out to Oli Bierhoff's deflected golden goal as Germany secured a record third European title at Wembley – and played some wonderful stuff en route to a semi-final defeat against eventual winners Greece in ‘04; that, though, in the days of the fabled ‘golden generation' of Czech football.
0' PREVIEW
Group A favourites and Euro 2012 dark horses Russia take centre stage later this evening, looking to go one better than Guus Hiddink's class of ‘08. A last-four clash with Spain proved their undoing back then, but a group-topping qualifying campaign and a run of fourteen matches without defeat with just four goals conceded - including a handsome 3-0 friendly win over the Italians just last week - speaks volumes for a thoroughly-gifted side now under the tutelage of seasoned coach Dick Advocaat. In contrast, Michal Bilek's Czech Republic needed a play-off win over Montenegro to book their place at the finals, losing more qualifying matches (three) than any other side at the tournament. Bet they'd kill for the old Nedved-Koller routine…
