West Ham United vs. Aston Villa
Minute Commentary
90' DID ENOUGH
West Ham take all three points here, in a deserved win against a below-par Aston Villa side. A slightly questionable goal gave West Ham the lead, but Villa did not once look like seriously threatening. Villa had most of the possession, especially in the first half, and were keeping the ball well, but looked pretty clueless once they reached the edge of the West Ham box. West Ham were happy to allow Villa the possession in front of them, looking solid and organised at the back, and are always a threat when Carlton Cole is in the side. James Collins was solid upon his Upton Park return, whilst on the plus side for Villa, both Ron Vlaar and Karim El Ahmadi had decent games. West Ham know they will face tougher tests throughout the season, and will have to keep up the hard work to ensure survival, whilst Villa will have to improve on this performance if they want to progress.
90' FULL TIME
Thats it. The Hammers take the spoils. West Ham United 1 - 0 Aston Villa
90' SO CLOSE TO A DEBUT GOAL
The ball breaks for Modibo Maiga, who shows good pace to drift pass his marker and get in one on one with Shay Given, and looks certain to score. He easily dances past Given, but his touch takes him a little wide and gives Baker a chance to get back and clear off the line.
90' LAST PUSH
Villa are still playing short passes across their backline. Where is the urgency?
90' MAN OF THE MATCH
James Collins is given man of the match by the stadium announcer. It's hard to argue with that one.
90' STOPPAGE TIME
Four minutes are signalled.
88' TICK TOCK
Time is ticking away for Villa, and their passes can only find West Ham players. It's hard to think of a single occassion when Villa have really threatened.
85' MANAGERS
Paul Lambert is right on the edge of his technical area, looking a little frustrated. His side have just offered very little going forward. Sam Allardyce on the other hand will be very disappointed if his side do not win.
81' SUBSTITUTION FOR WEST HAM
The Hammers get a chance to take a look at their new striker as Modibo Maiga replaces a shattered looking Carlton Cole. 100% commitment from Cole today.
80' DISAPPOINTING
It has to be said that Villa have been a little disappointing today. The seem to have run out of ideas, and are playing the ball around the back like they are winning handsomely.
78' SO CLOSE
Carlton Cole has his head in his hands as his unmarked header inches narrowly wide.
77' SUBSTITUTION FOR VILLA
Barry Bannan on for Fabian Delph
76' INVITATION
West Ham decide against closing down Ron Vlaar, and the big centre back strides forward with the ball, and without needing a second invitation sends a stinging drive towards Jussi Jaaskelainen which is well held. Looks like Vlaar has some shooting boots.
75' SOLID BAKER
Matthew Taylor finds a bit of space out the left flank, and his cross is heading for Vaz Te at the far post, only for Baker to leap majestically and head the ball clear.
74' SUBSTITUTION FOR ASTON VILLA
Gary Gardner on for Charles N'Zogbia
73' SUBSTITUTION FOR WEST HAM
Kevin Nolan replaced by crowd favourite James Tomkins
71' SUBSTITUTION FOR WEST HAM
George McCartney's cramp has obviously got the better of him. Joey O'Brien comes on in his place.
69' GET SOME FLUID
A pause in the game as George McCartney gets treatment for a touch of cramp. The players take the chance to have drink. Blisteringly hot here.
66' WING PLAY
Vaz Te gets involved down the right, selling Baker a dummy before getting in a cross, which would have found Cole, only for a vital interception from Vlaar. Nolan's follow up shot is cleared to safety.
64' TALE OF TWO CENTRE BACKS
James Collins has had a really solid second debut for the Hammers. Allardyce will be pleased. Ron Vlaar for Villa has also looked really solid, Lambert may have unearthed a gem.
63' IMPROVEMENT
Weimann makes an immediate impact, as he works the channels to collect the ball, before laying a pass into the path of Charles N'Zogbia. N'Zogbia takes one touch before unleashing a left-foot rocket which is deflected over for Villas first corner of the game. Better.
61' SUBSTITUTION FOR VILLA
Andreas Weimann on for Brett Holman. Holman is replaced after a reasonably quiet debut, hopefully Weimann will be able to offer Bent some support. Looks a little more like 4-4-2 now.
60' HOUR GONE
We have played an hour here, and Villa need to do something a bit different. Bent is so isolated up front, it looks like Lambert is looking to make a change.
58' IMPRESSIVE DEBUT
After a quiet first half Mohamed Diame has really muscled his way back into this game, and currenlty looks like one of the better players on the pitch. Good signs for West Ham.
57' CRACKING ATMOSPHERE
Upton Park is really rocking today. The crowd have not stopped singing and cheering on their claret-wearing heroes. Great atmosphere.
55' FIGURED OUT
It seems that West Ham may have worked Villa out here. The Hammers are happily allowing Villa possession, but it is all in front of the Londoners, and not making any forward progress.
53' NOT QUITE
Mohamed Diame shows real endeavour to win the ball back and stride towards goal. But perhaps shooting is not one of his best talents, as his shot nearly leaves Upton Park over the top of the stand.
52' PENALTY CLAIM REVIEW
After viewing the replay of West Ham's big penalty claim, it does appear Cole went over very easily. Cheeky.
50' HAMMERS ON TOP
In contrast to the first half, West Ham have started the second half well on top. Villa are unable to find Darren Bent, and the only real danger looks to be set pieces.
48' SCREAMING FOR IT
A blinding pass from Guy Demel finds Carlton Cole in the box. Ron Vlaar shoves him over and the whole of Upton Park scream for a spot-kick. Mike Dean is not remotely interested.
46' IRELAND EARLY
After going the whole of the first half without a meaningful shot on target, Stephen Ireland tests Jussi Jaaskelainen with a bobbling half volley within the first twenty seconds of the second half. The big keeper gets down well to block.
46' KICK OFF
The Hammers and their bubbles get us underway for the second half.
45' ONE MOMENT IN TIME
A quiet first half has really all been about one moment - the goal. Villa have looked sharper and more comfortable on the ball, dominating midfield possession, but offering little penetration. West Ham have grown into the half, inching ever further up the pitch, with Carlton Cole acting as something of a battering ram against the Aston Villa backline. The controversial goal came in the 40th minute as Vaz Te squared for Nolan to tuck home. The assistant referee had raised his flag to signal Vaz Te was offside, but the referee, perhaps correctly from the replays, overruled. Lets hope for a more open second half. West Ham United 1 - 0 Aston Villa
45' HALF TIME
The referee ends the half. West Ham United 1 - 0 Aston Villa
45' NUISANCE
Aston Villa are giving a lot of free kicks away here. Carlton Cole looks like he is causing problems to the Villa back line.
45' STOPPAGE TIME
Two minutes signalled by the fourth official.
44' SYMPATHY
You do have to feel for Villa, they have had all the possession, but have made very little impression in the final third.
41' OFFSIDE?
Following Clark's challenge the ball is tossed in towards Collins, who looks to have flicked it on to an offside Ricardo Vaz Te. The assitant referee raises his flag and the Villa team seem to stop, but the referee waves play on, for Nolan to tuck the ball home. It looks as though the ref decided the flick to Vaz Te came from a Villa head, so the West Ham man is not offside. Villa will feel hard done by.
40' GOOOOOAALLL
Some controversey here as Nolan tucks the ball home. West Ham United 1 - 0 Aston Villa
39' BOOKING
Diame's powerful run is bought to a halt by a cynical challenge from Clark. Yellow Card.
37' BACK IN IT
West Ham are starting to make their presence felt here, with a succession of corners, and some more sustained pressure. Villa don't look too concerned so far.
36' CLOSE
Vlaar fouls Cole right on the edge of the box. Up steps Nolan, who smashes it along the ground. Some parts of the ground thinks it has gone in, but it has crept marginally wide.
34' KNOCK
Ron Vlaar takes a blow to the head, which leads to the first bit of bloodshed of the season. The Dutchman leaves the pitch, only to reappear with a very attractive bandage.
33' ROCKET
West Ham find themselves with a free kick on the edge of the box, which Taylor rifles goalward. It looks to be flying towards the corner, but is blocked before it reaches Given.
32' PATTERN
There seems to be a real change in strategy for Villa on today's evidence. Every set piece, including goal kicks, they are looking for the short pass, building slowly from the back. This the Paul Lambert effect.
29' HEAT
Hottest day of the year in London so far. Anyone for an ice cream?
28' TRACKING
Taylor makes a quick break down the left flank, but Delph shows real pace and commitment, tracking back to make a chance-saving tackle.
27' SHOT
A shot on target of sorts for West Ham. A long range free kick from Noble drifts harmlessly into the arms of Given. Nothing more than catching practise.
25' MIDFIELD BATTLE
El Ahmadi, Delph and Ireland seem to be winning the midfield battle here every time. Vaz Te and Taylor have barely had a mention out wide, whilst Nolan, Diame and Noble are doing a lot of running with little reward.
22' SOLID
James Collins shows why Allardyce wanted to bring him back to West Ham, with two excellent blocks following good work from Ireland and El Ahmadi. No way past the centre back there.
19' CONTRAST
There is a real contrast in styles here: Villa are looking to play short simple passes and keep possession, whilst West Ham are playing very direct, looking to get the ball up towards the forward players as quickly as possible. Still no chances to report.
17' HAMMERS CHANCE
First effort for West Ham...is an air shot. Cole is crowded out in the Villa box and fluffs his strike.
15' HAPPY MANAGER?
Paul Lambert will undoutedly be the happier of the two managers after the first fifteen. Although there have been no real chances for either side, the midlanders have nullified the home side so far.
10' NEW BOY
Karim El Ahmadi looks the most impressive out of the new signings on display here so far. The Moroccan looks comfortable on the ball, and looks like he has an eye for the early pass in behind for Bent to chase.
10' ELDER STATESMAN
Combined age of the two keepers on show today...73 years old!
8' CROWD
"Come on you irons" rings around the stadium as the crowd look to encourage the home side forward. Quiet start here from the hammers.
7' STATS
This is the fifth time these two sides have met on the opening day and Villa have won all of them!
5' FIRST FIVE
Villa can probably boast more of the possession in the opening five minutes, but both sides understandably finding their feet and looking quite tentative.
3' SHOT IN ANGER
Brett Holman takes Villa's first shot of the season, as he cuts in and hits a rasping left foot drive, but it sails wide.
2' TEMPO
Very warm in East London, as Upton Park is bathed in sunshine. This could be a good first test of fitness levels.
1' KICK OFF
Aston Villa, in their changed yellow strip, get the game underway. And the Premier League is back!!
0' WELCOME BACK
A massive roar and a rousing edition of I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles greets both sets of players as they make their way onto the Boleyn Ground turf.
0' VILLA LINEUP
Four debuts in the Villa starting lineup as Lambert names a relatively new look and youthfull side. Given starts in goal, with both Ireland and Delph getting a run out in the middle of the park. Lineup: Given,Lowton, Vlaar, Clark, Baker, Holman, El Admadi, Delph, N'Zogbia, Ireland, Bent.
0' WEST HAM LINEUP
The teams have been announced. For West Ham, debuts for Jussi Jaaskelainen and Mohamed Diame and a second debut for James Collins against his former empolyers. Line up reads: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins, McCartney, Noble, Diame, Nolan, Vaz Te, Cole, Taylor
0' CLARET CLASH
The summer break is over in a haze of penalty shootouts, pedalling, sideburns and gold medals, as the Premier League makes its long awaited return. Upton Park is the venue for this 15.00 kick-off between the top-flight's Claret and Blue sides. West Ham are back in the big time, after a quick visit to the Championship, and despite a well published absence of Andy Carroll; Cole and Co will be looking to start the season with a flourish. Aston Villa will also be looking for a fresh start under the leadership of Paul Lambert, who arrived at Villa from Norwich having impressed many on the back of a successful first season in the top division with the Canaries.
0' SAM'S SIGNINGS
The Hammers have opted to bring in some Premier League experience, with four players the league knows well: re-signing James Collins from today's opponents Villa, and completing a permanent deal for George McCartney, as well as Diame from Wigan and Jaaskelainen from Bolton. France's Ligue 1 has provided some further steel to the midfield with the capture of one-time Liverpool lad Alou Diarra, as well as some potential firepower in the shape of the relatively unknown Modibo Maiga. A whole host of departures as Sam Allardyce reshuffles his troops saw Faye, Carew, Diop, Faubert and Sears leave for pastures new, whilst long-serving ‘keeper Rob Green left for London rivals QPR.
0' PAUL'S PURCHASES
Villa have looked to Holland for reinforcements with three of the four having plied their trade in the Eredevise last season. Centre back Ron Vlaar has impressed during pre-season and former Feyenoord colleague Karim El Ahmadi will be looking to prove himself in the centre of the Villa midfield. Australian Brett Holman was the creative force on the wing for AZ Alkmaar last season and Lambert will hope that form can be continued into the Premier League season. Heskey, Beye, Cuellar and Collins have all moved on, but the signing of exciting young fullback Matt Lowton from Sheffield United could be one to watch out for.
0' WHU TEAM NEWS
James Collins is in contention to make his second debut for the Hammers, but fellow Wales international Jack Collison is missing with a knee injury. Both of Allardyce's overseas signings are unlikely to feature due to slight fitness concerns, and it will be interesting to see whether the experience of Jaaskelainen or the promise of Henderson is trusted to keep goal.
0' AV TEAM NEWS
Brett Holman has shaken off his international injury, and is in contention - as are Villa's other newcomers – whilst Shay Given has revealed he is expecting a fight for the number one jersey from the re-signed Brad Guzan. Striker Gabriel Agbonlahor (knee), defender Richard Dunne (groin) and winger Marc Albrighton (foot) are still sidelined.
0' HEAD TO HEAD
West Ham have failed to score in their last two opening season matches, and Villa have failed to win a season opening match on the road for 13 years. A mild case of relegation for West Ham meant these two sides did not meet last season; however the season before saw Villa do the double over the Londoners. Last season's form would suggest a home win, but much has changed since May, and both sides will want to make a real statement of intent.
0' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Old favourite Mike Dean is today's whistle blower. Dean was last season's busiest ref, officiating in the most Premier League matches and handing out the most yellow cards at an average of 3.6 per game, behind only Kevin Friend and Phil Dowd in the list of yellow-happy referees.
0' THE PREMIER LEAGUE IS BACK!
It's just 14 weeks since that stunning conclusion to the last Premier League season. In that time we've seen a superb Euro 2012 and Bradley Wiggins lead Team Sky to Tour de France glory. There's also been a little bit of sport going on in London recently, but you may not have noticed. Despite all of that terrific summer sport and the inevitable comparisons with the English national game, the excitement is still there for the start of a fascinating new season… and we'll have live text commentary of every single game.
