Washington WR James Johnson retires

SEATTLE (AP) Washington wide receiver James Johnson has retired from football due to a wrist injury, ending a once-promising career that was plagued by injuries.

The school announced Johnson's decision Thursday. He was expected to compete for a starting receiver spot this fall.

Johnson's career started with a flourish. He caught a touchdown pass in coach Steve Sarkisian's first game with the Huskies against LSU in 2009. Johnson caught 39 passes for 422 yards and three touchdowns in 2009, but played in just six games as a sophomore and fell down the depth chart as a junior.
