How many playoff rankings will appear in FCS?
By CRAIG HALEY
(STATS) - The release of six sets of rankings for the College Football Playoff in 2019 again demonstrates the public's interest in the impending postseason.
In the lower half of Division I, will the selection committee for the FCS playoffs get the hint?
Three years ago, the FCS began to release pre-playoff rankings to help build excitement and discussion prior to the announcement of the 24-team playoff field. Yet the rankings decreased from three sets of Top 10s in 2016 to two in 2017 to just one last year.
Plus, the lone release last Halloween night occurred 18 days prior to Selection Sunday.
The regular season will be one week longer this year because of an extra Saturday between Labor Day and Thanksgiving, so the playoff field won't be announced until Nov. 24. That alone should guarantee at least two sets of rankings, but FCS fans probably want more than that.
The FBS will have more rankings than the FCS because its postseason pairings are not announced until the sixth set on Dec. 8. The first set will be released Nov. 5.
