Darrell Asberry new Texas Southern football coach

HOUSTON (AP) Darrell Asberry is the new head football coach at Texas Southern.

TSU officials made the announcement Thursday. Asberry is taking over a Tigers program in the Football Championship Subdivision after coaching at Division II Shaw for the past five seasons.

In those five seasons with the Bears, Asberry compiled a 40-25 overall record and a 30-13 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. He led the Bears to CIAA titles in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

He succeeds interim head coach Kevin Ramsey, whom TSU officials say will have an opportunity to remain as defensive coordinator. In 2011, Ramsey led the Tigers to a 4-7 overall record and a 2-7 mark in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. He took charge after the April firing of Johnnie Cole.
