Hampton routs Delaware State 42-6 on 4 late TDs

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) Leading just 14-6 early in the fourth quarter, Hampton erupted for four touchdowns in less than eight minutes to rout Delaware State 42-6 Saturday in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.

The Pirates (6-4, 4-3) scored three of those touchdowns on long plays, including a 43-yard interception return by Lyndell Gibson for the game's final score. That was one of six interceptions thrown by Delaware State (2-8, 0-7) quarterback Josh Bailey, and the second pick returned for a touchdown.

Delbert Tyler sped 40 yards with a first-quarter interception to score before Bradford Hudson's 30-yard touchdown pass to Dyrri McCain made it 14-0 entering the fourth quarter. But Travis Tarpley's 16-yard run cut it to 14-6. Then Hampton exploded.

After Bradford's 46-yard scoring pass to Christian Tabron, Antonio McLoude scored from 3 yards out. Antwon Chisolm then raced 72 yards for another touchdown before Gibson closed the scoring with his 43-yard interception return.
