Howard edges Norfolk State 37-36 on blocked kick

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) Julien David blocked Everett Goldberg's extra point try in overtime to give Howard a 37-36 victory over Norfolk State on Saturday in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

After Goldberg's 38-yard field goal with 5 seconds left in regulation pulled the Spartans into a 30-30 tie, the Bison (2-1) got the ball first in overtime. Greg McGhee ran for a 2-yard touchdown after finding Brandon Flanagan for 22 yards, and Parker Munoz's kick was good.

Norfolk State (2-1), the defending MEAC champion, reached the Howard 10 on Nico Flores' 13-yard pass to Reggie Garrett. Flores then threw three incompletions but pass interference moved the ball to the 4. Brendon Riddick ran it in from there before the failed extra point.

Terrence Leffall carried 31 times for 122 yards for Howard.

Flores was 30-for-48 passing for 387 yards for the Spartans with four touchdown passes.
