Washington State adds Lopes to coaching staff

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) Washington State has hired former Fresno State head coach Ray Lopes as an assistant coach.

Cougars coach Ken Bone made the announcement Tuesday. Lopes spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Idaho. Before that, Lopes coached in the NBA Developmental League, leading Idaho to the league title in 2008.

Lopes was an assistant under Kelvin Sampson at Washington State in 1993-94 and went with Sampson to Oklahoma. He took over at Fresno State during the 2002-03 season, leading the Bulldogs to the Western Athletic Conference regular season title. Lopes was named the WAC coach of the year that season.

Lopes resigned following the 2004-05 season when he admitted to school officials he had violated NCAA rules on telephone contact with recruits.
