Fermin leads Cal Poly past UC Riverside 66-54
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Amaurys Fermin scored 16 points and Cal Poly outscored UC Riverside 22-5 to start the second half en route to a 66-54 victory Thursday night in the opening round of the Big West tournament.
The fourth-seeded Mustangs (18-14) advance to the semifinals Friday against No. 3 seed UC Santa Barbara. Cal Poly was swept by the Gauchos during the regular season.
Cal Poly trailed 34-28 at halftime, but tied it at 35-all after a 3-pointer by Dylan Royer and a three-point play by Fermin. The Mustangs went ahead 50-39 on a 3-pointer by Eversley with 9:28 remaining.
Riverside missed its first five shots after the break and was just 1 for 9 from the floor during the Mustangs' second-half spurt.
