George Mason tops Georgia St. 61-59 in CAA tourney
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Bryon Allen's reverse layup with 3.4 seconds remaining broke a 59-all tie and gave third-seeded George Mason a 61-59 victory against Georgia State in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament on Saturday night.
Mike Morrison had 12 points and four blocks and Sherrod Wright scored all 10 of his points in a span of four minutes late in the second half for the Patriots (24-8), who advanced to a rubber game against second-seeded Virginia Commonwealth in the semifinals on Sunday.
The Panthers (21-11) led most off the way before a 12-3 run gave George Mason a 52-46 lead with 7:24 to play. Georgia State finally drew even again on a steal and layup by James Fields with 33 seconds to go, but Allen's play denied them their first trip to the semifinals.
Fields scored 15 points and Rashaad Richardson 10 for the Panthers.
