Columbia hits record 17 3-pointers in 85-38 win

NEW YORK (AP) Gabe Stefanini hit a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points and Columbia made a school-record 17 3s in beating St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) 85-38 on Sunday for its first win of the season.

The Lions have made 16 3-pointers in a game four times, most recently against Cornell last January.

Stefanini made 7 of 9 3-point attempts and the Lions hit 17 of 44 from distance, two attempts shy of the school record.

Columbia opened with six straight 3-pointers, Randy Brumant capped the run with a dunk and Columbia pulled away to a 36-point halftime lead, 55-19, after hitting 13 3s, led by Stefanini's seven.

The Lions hit four straight 3s to open the second half and led by as many as 50 points.

Brumant scored 10 points and grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds for Columbia (1-4), who outrebounded the Bears 54-26 and outscored them 26-12 in the paint. Maka Ellis added a season-high 15 points and Tai Bibbs and Peter Barba distributed five assists apiece.

Kavan Meiner scored nine points for the Bears, members of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
