Butler holds off Gardner-Webb for 68-66 victory

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Chrishawn Hopkins scored 22 points and Chase Stigall added 14 as Butler held off Gardner-Webb 68-66 in the Hoosier Invitational on Wednesday night.

Andrew Smith added 11 points for Butler (3-2) and made two free throws to give his team a 67-63 lead with 27 seconds remaining.

Mike Byron made a layup for Gardner-Webb (2-4), which then put Butler's Aldridge Jackson at the free-throw line with 14 seconds left. He made the second shot.

With Gardner-Webb trailing 68-65, Tashan Newsome went to the line with a second remaining. He made the first shot, but his intentional miss was rebounded by Butler.

Byron led Gardner-Webb with 16 points, and Max Landis added 14.
