Columbia Union 63, Howard 83

WASHINGTON (AP) Calvin Thompson scored 23 points and Howard needed a huge second-half surge to overtake Washington Adventist in an 83-63 win on Monday night.

The Bison (1-1) trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half and 38-34 at the break. The NCAA Division II Pioneers held a 48-42 lead with 16:34 to play when Howard went on a 30-8 run to take a 72-56 advantage with 4:40 left.

Washington Adventist (0-1) could get no closer than 14 the rest of the way, shooting 29.2 percent (21 of 72) for the game.

Simuel Frazier added 14 points, Alphonso Leary 13 and Mike Phillips and Dadrian Collins 11 apiece as the Bison improved from 12-of-34 field-goal shooting in the first half (35.3 percent) to 16 of 27 (59.3 percent) in the second.

Marcus Coleman had 18 points and 16 rebounds and Jamie Newton added 18 points for the Pioneers.
