Drake opens with 83-58 defeat of Upper Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Aaron Hawley had 23 points and seven rebounds to lead five Drake players scoring in double figures in an 83-58 victory against Upper Iowa in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night.

Jeremy Jeffers had 15 points, Karl Madison 13, Ben Simons 12 and Clarke Jordan 11 for the Bulldogs (1-0).

Tucker Wentzien had 14 points and six rebounds to lead the Division II Peacocks.

Upper Iowa hung tough early, leading 18-17 with 6:52 remaining in the first half. But three consecutive 3-pointers, two by Hawley and one by Jeffers, ignited a 22-10 run by Drake to finish the half.
