Greece vs. Russia
Minute Commentary
90' UNEXPECTED
Well, Greece take their place in the next round, and you have to say that it was a surprise result. Russia spent a lot of time camped in the Greek half, but could do nothing with the amount of the ball that they had. Greece, on the other hand, looked dangerous on the break and took the lead through Giorgos Karagounis after some very poor Russian defending. Karagounis was brought down in the area in the second half, but instead of giving the penalty the referee booked the Greek forward for diving. Karagounis was furious and rightly so, but even he was in full party mood at full time despite the fact that he will miss the next match. Russia will look back on this as a poor tournament, especially considering their 4-1 win against the Czech Republic on opening night, but the Greeks will be on cloud nine. Final score Greece 1, Russia 0.
90' FULL TIME
The referee ends the match. Greece win 1-0, and take a place in the quarter finals at the expense of Russia!
90' LATE BOOKING
Jose Holebas is booked for timewasting over a throw in.
90' BOOKING
Pavel Pogrebnyak brings the ball down with his arm, before turning and shooting. The referee spots the infringement and books the tall striker.
90' MORE HANDBAGS
Roman Shirokov bursts into the box and clatters into Michalis Sifakis. The challenge looks fair but the Greek players surround Shirokov and the referee has to break it up.
90' ADDED TIME
Four minutes are given as injury time.
90' TOO MANY COOKS
Russia win a corner and their players flood the box, but two players go up for the same header and the ball bounces harmlessly wide.
88' ONE TOUCH TOO MANY
Russia are giving this their all, but they are just getting it wrong with their final ball. The fans do not look happy.
85' HANDBAGS
Konstantinos Katsouranis goes down under a soft challenge, and Greece put the ball out. The Russian players aren't very happy and a scuffle breaks out, although it calms down just as quickly. Katsouranis, who was clearly acting, is taken off on a stretcher and promptly jumps off it.
84' SO CLOSE
Arshavin whips the ball in from deep on the right-hand side, and Dzagoev is inches away from knocking it in with a headed effort. Russia are suddenly pressing forward in search of a goal.
83' GREEK CHANGE
Sotiris Ninis is coming on, with Dimitrios Salpingidis leaving the field after a good shift.
81' FINAL RUSSIAN CHANGE
Aleksandr Anyukov leaves the field to be replaced by Marat Izmailov, a striker.
80' SO CLOSE
Dimitrios Salpingidis should really have scored a second for Greece. A low ball comes across the face of the goal, and Salpingidis just doesn't get his toes to it.
78' LACKLUSTRE
Russia clearly have the quality here, but not the application. Greece have been able to hold firm against any Russian attack.
76' GERMANY WAITING
If, as expected, Germany top their group, they will face the runners-up in this group. Not something Greece will look forward to, I'm sure.
75' GOOD STOP
Michalis Sifakis makes a neat stop after Igor Denisov fires in a low shot following a corner.
74' CLARIFICATION
As it stands, Greece will be second in the group. Both they and Russia have four points, but Greece will go through due to their better record head-to-head.
73' RUSSIA CHANGE
Pavel Pogrebnyak, the former Fulham forward, takes the place of Denis Glushakov.
72' UPDATE
The Czech Republic are now leading Poland, and as it stands the Czechs are now top of the group, with Greece in second place behind them.
71' HORRIBLE CHALLENGE
Alan Dzagoev goes in thigh-high on Giorgos Tzavellas as he goes to collect the ball after his free kick. Dzagoev is booked and will now miss the quarter final.
70' OFF THE POST!
Samaras bursts forward and gains a free kick, for which Yuri Zhirkov is booked. Giorgos Tzavellas hits a curling left foot shot, which clatters off the post and back into play.
67' ANOTHER GREECE CHANGE
Giorgos Karagounis is called for a substitution, but not before giving the referee a piece of his mind. He's lucky to leave the field, and Grigoris Makos takes his place.
64' GREECE SUBSTITUTION
Theofanis Gekas is leaving the field, and is replaced by Jose Holebas. A strange one, seeing as Gekas is a forward and Holebas is a full-back. Also strange that a still-fuming Karagounis is still on the field.
63' FURIOUS
Giorgos Karagounis is still not happy here after that penalty incident, and is on the verge of tears. He needs to get his head back in the game.
61' PENALTY - OR NOT!
Giorgos Karagounis bursts into the box and goes down under a challenge from Aleksei Berezutski. The referee blows his whistle, and then books Karagounis for diving. The Greek striker is furious, knowing that he will miss the next game, and is signalling to the bench that he wants to come off.
61' IN CONTROL
Greece are bullying Russia all over the pitch, not giving them any time on the ball and pressuring them.
59' WHAT A RUN
Vasilis Torosidis does superbly here. He breaks down the right and beats three players, before squaring the ball for Dimitrios Salpingidis. It takes a last-ditch challenge from Aleksandr Anyukov to keep the ball out.
57' PRESSING
Russia are coming forward in numbers, but cannot find the final ball. Igor Denisov rifles in a long range shot which curls wide of the post.
54' USING THE WINGS
Russia are trying to play wide and cause some problems from the wings, but their play is letting them down instead of Greece defending well.
51' WASTE
Roman Shirokov wastes a great chance here. Aleksandr Anyukov breaks down the right and sends in a deep cross, which is cushioned down for Shirokov. He hits it first time, but his shot from the edge of the box sails over the bar.
50' LIVELY FANS
The fans have come to life here and are in full voice. The Russian team need some lifting and will hope that their fans can give it to them.
47' NEED TO GET ON
Russia need to press forward in this tie. As it stands, all teams will be on four points, and Russia will only go through on account of goals scored.
46' RUSSIA CHANGE
Roman Pavlyuchenko has come on to take the place of Aleksandr Kerzhakov. The former Spurs man will be hoping to impress.
46' KICK OFF
Russia start the second half.
45' BEST RESULT
Well, as it stands because of that goal, Greece will be joining Russia in the quarter finals. Russia have been the better side for long periods and really should have taken the lead several times, but the Greek defence has just about held firm. Up the other end, Greece have been reduced to playing long balls until the last minute, when some poor Russian defending allowed Giorgos Karagounis to score. Hopefully that goal will be the spark that this game needs to come to life.
45' HALF TIME
And that's the end of the half. Greece 1, Russia 0.
45' UNEXPECTED BREAKTHROUGH
Giorgos Karagounis has put the Greeks ahead here, and Russia only have themselves to blame. Yuri Zhirkov flicks the ball on from a Greek throw, allowing Karagounis to surge forward and fire in a shot through the legs of Vyacheslav Malafeev. Greece 1, Russia 0.
45' GOOOOAAAAALLLL
GREECE TAKE AN UNLIKELY LEAD!!!!!
45' NO ATMOSPHERE
The fans are very quiet here in the stadium. Arshavin goes across to take a corner and tries to rouse the Russian support.
45' ADDED TIME
Two minutes are signalled by the referee. I really don't know what for.
45' RUSSIAN PRESSURE
Russia come forward once again and look to gain the advantage, but Greece hold firm and eventually clear the ball after some ping-pong round the box.
42' PLAYING TIME DOWN
This game is heading towards half time with a whimper. Neither side are looking to press on for the last minutes.
40' SO CLOSE!
Yuri Zhirkov picks up the ball from the corner and sends in a fierce, rasping shot, which skims the top of the crossbar.
39' NO BOOKINGS YET
The tackles have been flying in thick and fast for the last couple of minutes, but the referee has kept his cards in his pocket so far.
37' COMING FORWARD AGAIN
Russia are once again camped in the Greek half. They have looked for a penalty or two in the last few moments, but the referee has given them nothing.
36' BORING
This is the poorest game of football that I have seen in this championship. Greece appear to be lacking in quality, whilst Russia don't seem to be putting too much effort in.
34' FIGHTING BACK
After a period of Russian pressure, Greece are looking to find away ahead themselves. Russia look more than capable of dealing with the Greek pressure, however.
31' WEATHER WARNING
Dark clouds are gathering over the stadium and there are storm warnings for the area. There isn't any rain as yet, but conditions for the other game in the group are rapidly deteriorating.
29' PRESSURE
Greece just cannot keep up with Russia's swift passing. Andrei Arshavin slides through a ball from the right, looking for Alan Dzagoev, and Greece are forced into a last-ditch clearance.
27' CAN'T GET THE BALL
Russia seem happy to hold the ball and play it around, whilst Greece have everyone back. The only person in the Russian half at the moment is Vyacheslav Malafeev.
24' SETTLED
The game has quitened in a last few moments, but it could spring into life at any moment.
22' GOOD DEFENCE
Russia have been coming forward in the last few minutes, but the Greek defence has held strong. I wonder if it can continue all night.
21' TURNING THE SCREW
Russia show some fluid passing, which ends with a low Andrei Arshavin shot from the edge of the box. It rolls past Michalis Sifakis's right-hand post.
19' POOR EFFOT
Alan Dzagoev tries a low drive from the edge of the box, which is easily saved by Michalis Sifakis. Dzagoev should really have squared it to Aleksandr Kerzhakov, who was in a better position.
18' GOOD BREAK
Georgios Samaras and Theofanis Gekas combine well on the counter-attack, before Gekkas sends in a low ball from the right. Russia get back to clear, and Samaras looks suitably frustrated.
17' GREAT RUN
Yuri Zhirkov shows why Chelsea paid so much money for him a few years back. He bursts forward from midfield, cutting past defenders, before squaring a ball back at the edge of the six-yard box. Vasilis Torosidis clears the ball before Alan Dzagoev can get his boot to it.
16' LONG BALL CAUSING PROBLEMS
The Russian defence are playing a high line and the Greeks are exploiting that with long balls. Moments after Vyacheslav Malafeev is forced into a save from a long cross, Greece win a corner. It comes to nothing.
13' SO CLOSE
Aleksandr Kerzhakov should have put Russia in the lead. Some fluid Russian passing, accompanied by some poor Greek defending, lead to Kerzhakov hitting a shot on the half-volley from just outside the box. It sails inches wide of the post, however.
12' SLOW TEMPO
The game is being played at a leisurely pace, with the Russians knowing that they are virtually guaranteed a place in the quarter finals whatever the result.
10' GOOD CHANCE, GREAT SAVE
Andrei Arshavin gets his boot on to a cross from the right-hand side, but Michalis Sifakis makes himself big and blocks the shot with ease.
9' GOOD CROSS
Georgios Samaras breaks well down the left and sends in a cross, but Dimitrios Salpingidis is inches away from getting his head to it.
7' OUCH
Theofanis Gekas and Aleksandr Anyukov clash heads when fighting for the ball. Both men go down, but the Russian seems to be in a worse state.
6' GOOD SAVE!
Greece win a corner, which is sent in from the right. Konstantinos Katsouranis flicks the ball on, looking for Dimitrios Salpingidis, but Vyacheslav Malafeev tips the ball away.
5' PRESSURE
Greece are pouring forward in numbers, looking to pressure the Russians. The Greeks know that they have to win in order to stay in the contest.
3' POOR RUN
Dimitrios Salpingidis gets his head on the ball following a deep cross, but the flag goes off and the balding forward is ruled offside.
2' EARLY CHANCE
Andrei Arshavin mishits a chance from the outside the area, and the ball bobbles free. Roman Shirokov surges forward from midfield and looks to latch on to it, but Michalis Sifakis is out early to collect.
1' KICK OFF
Greece, in their all-white kit, start the game kicking from left to right.
0' QUALIFICATION GUIDE
Russia are in the best position in the group, with a draw and a win under their belt, and could go through with any result. A win will see them definitely through, as will a draw. Even a loss would see them through depending on the result in the other tie. Greece, on the other hand, have to win by a handsome margin in order to stand any chance of progressing.
0' STATS AND FACTS
The most recent fixture between these two sides finished in a 1-1 draw last year, however Greece have the much worse record between the two teams, having won only one of the last 10 fixtures between the sides. Russia have beaten Greece in the group stages of the last two European Championships, in 2004 and 2008, and will be confident ahead of this tie.
0' KEY MEN
Greece have only scored two goals in the competition so far, with Dimitrios Salpingidis and Theofanis Gekas hitting the back of the net. However, Celtic man Georgios Samaras has done well in both games and could be the key for the Greeks tonight. On the other hand, Alan Dzagoev has scored three goals in the first two games and is hungry for more. The Greeks will have to keep him at bay tonight.
0' RUSSIA TEAM NEWS
There's only one change for the Russians, with Denis Glushakov replacing Konstantin Zyryanov. There had been some press speculation that Aleksandr Kerzhakov would be rested, with Roman Pavlyuchenko taking his place, but coach Dick Advocaat has chosen to stick with his regular forwards.
0' GREECE TEAM NEWS
Kostas Chalkias injured his hamstring against the Czech Republic and misses out, so Michalis Sifakis starts in his place.Sokratis Papastathopoulos returns after a one match suspension, and replaces the injured Avraam Papadopoulos. Jose Holebas drops to the bench along with Kostas Fortounis and Giorgos Fotakis, with Konstantinos Katsouranis, Giorgos Tzavellas and Kyriakos Papadopoulos coming into the side.
0' PREVIEW
Hello and welcome to tonight's game between Greece and Russia. As it stands, all four teams in Group A can still qualify for the quater-finals, so this game is a must-win for both sides.
